- digitalsol, on 11/01/2007, -1/+12The web is the platform! Develop on it! Proprietary platforms/networks are not going to succeed on the long term. How amazing is it going to be to develop applications that can easily leverage social networking components (friend graph, publish news feeds, etc.) just through few JavaScript calls on your application? No need to choose a network or develop for each and every network. Facebook evaluation just went down a bit...
- schisamo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8At least they know a thing or two about security/privacy. Facebook has shown it knows NOTHING:

- DarkPrincess74, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4That makes sense since companies like AT&T, Verizon, Microsoft and TJX take the extra time to protect your data and would never sell it to anyone. I'd rather google than most other companies who try to squeeze money from you in every sneaky way they can.
- OutsideofDreams, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4How long before major television advertising outlets force me into a demographic just because I watch a certain show or channel? If Google wants to show me ads based on my interests, fine. If I don't like them, AdBlock Plus + FireFox takes care of that little problem...
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4Oh My!!! ……….”Google wants to create an easy way for developers to create on application that works on all social networks. And if they pull it off, they’ll be in the center, controlling the network.”
Well enough said. No wonder why Google did not “WIN” the bidding war for the Facebook investment - They don’t have to when they are the toll booth at the bridge. On the other hand ALL the social networking sites will now have to open up otherwise they will lose members.
Just recently I was having this conversation with a technology guy who uses Facebook and I use MySpace. He sent me an Facebook invite and I told him that was the last thing I needed another “network”.
Continuation of the grand theme: Google doesn’t do content, they make it easier for you to find it, create it, share it. They don’t do social networks, just make the ones you already use better/easier. Don’t (won’t) make a phone, but will hopefully make mobile web apps (and OS) better and also makes carriers nervous. Cool, cool, and cool.
Scary stuff for Google competitors! Google wins AGAIN - jacook11, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial
won't be available until thursday - dennison, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2Not really, OpenSocial only requires HTML and JavaScript. FTA:
Unlike Facebook, OpenSocial does not have its own markup language (Facebook requires use of FBML for security reasons, but it also makes code unusable outside of Facebook). Instead, developers use normal javascript and html (and can embed Flash elements). - tetfsu, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1The facebook platform as it stands today seems to be fairly stable with plenty of features to make it easy enough for users to create their own apps on FB. People are already talking how this will be the "facebook killer". I'm betting that this is something that they have wanted. If this takes off, what harm will be be for FB to adopt some of the standards or release the Facebook API 2.0, that will let people use this and include the Facebook only stuff too. I don't think this is a facebook killer, it's got the potential to be a Facebook extender.
- hasanahmad, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Google afraid of Facebook confirmed
- manuelhp42, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Definitely very exciting times ahead. We are VERY excited about the prospects at http://tudiabetes.com !!
- kungfuice, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I think this is such a great idea. It's about time that somebody started unifying all of these proprietary social networking platforms. Standards have always been such a strong part of development and I am surprised it has taken this long for somebody to step up to the plate and make this a reality.
Could you imagine if Google came up with a site that allowed you to view all of your data from different social networks? I would sign up in a heart beat, not to mention they could integrate ad sense and other money making technologies into the site to fluff up their bottom line even more. This should be very very interesting. - inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Some more thoughts...
Very interesting indeed. User data, social graph and activities.
- All Google needs to do is use their Gmail address list and tap into the $20M, 5% AOL stake and integrate with AOL IM’s buddy list to have the world’s largest social graph.
- Now if Google could allow developers to tap into the API’s and embed social data on any website, there would be no walls, the entire web would be a social network….which it is already. (ie alert all your friends that this blog is a good read…which I already did via emailing them)
- So in the end, I guess we learn that openness always prevails.... WE LOVE YOU GOOGLE, this is what we expect from you, you have always taken the right, wise, and ethical step. - testerburner, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I'll be waiting for this to come out - this would be great for projects that require social network aspects....
- viserov, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Please, for the love of God, use punctuation (periods, commas, or even dashes or semicolons if you're feeling particularly brave) because what you said makes no sense to me.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1Do you have any idea how much your credit card companies know about you? Stop pointing fingers to Google. Google is as good as it gets, just because a company is number one doesn't mean they're going to rule everything.
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -2/+2google i like you don't be evil your good at filling niches and voids that other companies dont or behemoth companies won't theres no reason to take on facebook i don't want another social network that the same people are going to be a part of
- dannywhite, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0no need for any more social networks...

http://www.whomain.com - anthonylawrence, on 10/31/2007, -0/+0Bleargh. Time to learn yet another markup language I bet...this one the Open Social Markup Language. OSML! Grrrr!
- flyspirit, on 10/31/2007, -0/+0good news for socal network developers
- sockpuppets, on 10/31/2007, -2/+1So this will basically aggregate a bunch of smaller/less successful players in the hope of competing against giants that have little incentive to play along?
Sounds like the early days of eBay and their need to lock out aggregators and disintermediators. Only this time it's Facebook. - schoop, on 10/31/2007, -4/+1as i see it, there will be 3 APIs to learn, Facebook, Myspce (eventually) and OpenSocial (for the me toos)
- chris9902, on 10/31/2007, -4/+1And how long do you think it will be before Google start putting ads on sites that target your age, address, friends etc?
- chris9902, on 10/31/2007, -11/+1The last people I want holding all my personal information is Google.
