- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have to live in Henrico. :(
"Any individual that is not a Henrico resident or taxpayer will not be allowed to purchase an iBook on August 16." - blcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok I change what I said before - it sounds like they're generally worthless:
"Myers said he is surprised by the level of interest in the four-year-old machines, saying they are the oldest and most worn and may not be dependable for a long period of time. "The machines that gave us the most difficulty early in the program are now the ones that everyone wants," he said." - celtboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My first reaction was "BOOYAH!"..I figured I'd just get my dad/stepmom/2 stepbrothers to buy one for me....but now I'm not so sure....way too much publicity. Only saving grace is that the sale is in the morning on a weekday - lots of people still have to work.
And I think 1 of the mjr reasons that Henrico went with the Dells was because of all the problems they had with Apple - ibooks broke like crazy and the support from apple just sucked. not that I would know or anything... - ozjmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heck no, I'm in Richmond I want MY $50 iBook. So glad they included the bit about overnight parking and camping, I really didn't want to geekcamp for a laptop.
- gs191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is fair to a degree.
Its the Henrico County taxpayers who almost paid for the ibooks when they were used in schools, so they should only be able to buy them.
unfortunaly for me, i lived in henrico county then moved before they started the ibook program. they made money off my parents for 16 years by taxes and by us shopping in stores in henrico, at least people who are va taxpayers should have at least get a shot but still let henrico residents get first access. - shade73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, that makes me mad. I was so going too :(
- thunderclap8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I too would be willing to pay someone to pick up one of these for me - $100 + shipping. Haefele at gmail dot com
- pavelft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish they had made it for virginia residents, damnit, i'm only a couple hours away at radford. anyone in the henrico co area willing to help a college student who needs a laptop to take notes in class? i'm willing to pay extra, and come pick it up so you don't have to ship it.
- next, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sucks. Some friends and myself were planning a road trip down to Virginia to grab a few of these.
We figured getting cheap laptops might offset having to drop a ton of money on gas to go out of town for a few days. Oh well.. - saiajin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any Henrico Residents want to make some Extra money? MSG ME!!
- blcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live right outside Henrico limits. Everybody go heckle the city supervisors Richard Glover and David Kaechele - they're the douchebags who prompted the change.
- castufari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally. They had promised (not written) that the kids would get dibs on these when they graduated. End of life or not, they should either ebay them for several hundred bucks or restrict them to local residents.
/former Glen Allen resident
//soon to be Tuckahoe resident - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You notice how the article says only area residents will get to buy an iBook "on August 16"? I read that to mean they expect there to be iBooks left over and that they will probably make them generally available at another time...
- BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in Henrico.. but I plan on getting one myself. I can't get more than one. I do have a friend goin with me, but I think they are going to keep theirs too. I can't find anyone to go that doesn't want one already.
- boogeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For you guys that were really wanting one of these but don't live in Henrico County.Go get your license renewed in Henrico County its that simple make up some ***** address to give them.
- castufari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're looking for cheap computers try visiting your state's website and look for their surplus auctions. I picked up a Dell PE4200 (dual ppros, 1gb of ram) for $50.00. I installed a few drives then sold it to a local business for $300.00.
- BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They said if any are left over then they would announce a new date for out of county residents. I'd be amazed if any are left over though. I know a bunch of people going to get one. If I am able to get someone to go with me that dosen't want one, then I'll probably ebay it or something.
- Tyr4nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude i live right on the edge of the henrico mechanicsville area, i work in henrico...... this sucks ass
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Morals aside, if anyone in the Richmond, Virginia area would like to a favor and act as my proxy, that would be great. I am a college student from Illinois and could REALLY REALLY USE one of these iBooks. My email address is kefkakrist at gmail dot com. I would be willing to compensate you up to $100 shipped. Please email.
- nicklinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man they never keep the details straight, they have changed it 3 times now! I dont think they have them to tell you the truth!
- Fafhrd68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First 1000 laptops are for sale, over 17,000 were used during this program. Were did the others go...Well most were sold to the students. Other were sold to county employees and many of them were reclaimed by Apple for refurbishing. If you ask me how I know I am an employee of the Public Schools. While I was not hired when they made the ibooks a sale, I was privy to the sale via friends.
The books there talking about will be beat up, possibly even needing some repair. BUT for $50, plus repairing them you still get a deal. I plan to wipe and re-install and possibly make it a Linux machine. All in all its a good deal.
Lastly if you think there will be some left, think again.... Plan are being made to serve books in this order, youth have first pick, low income families, then the Henrico taxpayer. I know of at least 100 people that will be buying and Henrico County is on of the highest populated counties in VA (besides NOVA). Trust me their will be none left.... - drifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow...people just really only care if it sounds cheap huh? If the guy is saying they are beat up and old which i noticed by the specs. Then i highly doubt its a good deal especially for the out of towners wanting one. Apple laptops are one of the most expensive but still id rather have a new or very mildly used one. Atleast i'll know it works and wasnt messed up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally our crappy state has something going for it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i might be able to get someone one. send me and email at:
henricoibooksfordigg@gmail.com
send with the amount you are willing to spend - jacabo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now that i can't get mine i hope that the laptops don't work at all.
yes, i am bitter. suck it. - EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was going to make a 2 hr drive to pick one of these up just to have a mac to play with. There is nothing I hate more then when someone tells me they are going to do something then they don't do it. Don't tell me you're going to do it then at the last minute change your mind. It's just wrong.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's goddamn retarded... they should think about how much money they would bring into town by out of towners! It's not like the mac cult is a bad group... geez
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HECK YES! $50 DOLLAR IBOOK FOR ME. We paid the taxes to get these in the first place i don't want no freeloaders getting my raptop. I actually used them in school and when we first got them people shared soooo much porn, music, movies, roms/emulators, and everything else you could imagine. it was sweet.
- keybsnbits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HAHA Radford... how many STDs do you have? jk jk
- xjohnx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The poster above couldn't be more wrong. "Most" were not sold to the students. 1147 were sold to the students. and they are not being sold due to age/income/etc. Every henrico county resident has a fair crack at them. First come, first serve.
2001, Henrico County Public Schools signed an agreement to lease 18,000 from Apple.
2001-2002 school year: All teachers, as well as all high school students were issued an iBook upon paying a $50 security/insurance fee (not deposit).
2002-3 school year: Middle school (grades 6-8) students were issued iBooks. Everyone issues an iBook (teachers included) pays another $50 security/insurance fee
2003-4 & 2004-5 school years: continuation of the status quo.
2005: Henrico County asks for bids for new laptop contract. Apple, Dell, and CDWG respond. Dell wins on price.
The numbers released at the meeting are as such:
18000 laptops received
8000 laptops set aside to issue to middle school students in September
1147 laptops purchased by graduating seniors for $50 (apparently part of the agreement from 4 years ago)
1000 set aside for public surplus
"thousands" not serviceable, being used for parts
"others" set aside to provide loaner laptops when the issued iBooks are in for repair. - TuckWat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I never really felt lucky for living in henrico but i guess I should. Hopefully i'll go get it on the 16th without a problem. It really was a smart move on henrico's part though. I'm not even sure i'll be able to get one so if it were open to everyone there would be a hundred thousand people.
Oh and Tkn00b... you're ignorant. - jsi69i, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Unless you are in this small bumble f town ... who cares ?!
