- michaelmcg, on 11/13/2007, -13/+602Wow, this may be a huge blow. :(
- directsun, on 11/13/2007, -4/+356I'm pretty upset. They were good. I just got an account with them not long ago too!
Hmmm, well I guess it's time to relocate to Sweden. - Metoz, on 11/13/2007, -3/+293Second biggest tracker on the net. Ouch!
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -5/+293How about moving to Sweden?
- msaleem, on 11/13/2007, -4/+290***** hell, that was my site of choice. Down with the establishment!
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -5/+270But my ratio... It was actually good there!
- SomeHobo, on 11/13/2007, -8/+202They should relocate on that island Pirate Bay wants to go... It would become geek tourist hot spot too!
- themastersb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+189That's why my perfectly legal torrent hasn't been going anywhere.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+171NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- synthox, on 11/13/2007, -2/+160Well Demonoid has moved their servers before I am sure they will do it again. It does suck badly though.
- contrite, on 10/10/2007, -10/+164Blame Canada
- BZKyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+120Dammit... I thought all us Canadians were cool with filesharing :p
- DocHoliday22, on 11/11/2007, -4/+122That's an understatement.
- ZiggityZhang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+117UPDATE:
From their IRC channel.
-[ 13:36.19 ]- - - - - - -[ Topic ]- Demonoid.com | the proverbial mind spread | Don't give out invites to strangers | SITE IS TEMP OFFLINE - GodIsntReal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+105No proof it has anything to do with CRIA yet. Just speculation.
- DubbleA, on 10/10/2007, -2/+101Sorry for the comment reap, but Demonoid has not been shut down!
From Wikipedia:
As of Tuesday, 25th September 2007, Demonoid is currently down, with no prior warnings from any moderators of the site. Both the main torrent page and the forum (fora) are no longer accessible. It is still possible to ping and trace the IP address of the site and it locates itself as in Canada. As of 6:45pm EST on 9-25-07, SSH and SMTP services are no longer active.
Torrentfreak.com has since reported this is due to legal actions from the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) who ordered Demonoid's ISP to shut down the site. Update Sept 26 01:03 GMT - Demonoid not shut down, just an un-scheduled rebuild. (Posted to Demonoid IRC channel, and re-posted at zeropaid.com)
Anti-Piracy Organization Tries to Shut Down Demonoid
However, the current downtime of Demonoid has nothing to do with legal actions, but with hardware issues. The Demonoid team says they are currently replacing harddrives, and that it could take a few days before the site is back up.
The timeline given indicated that this is more than a regular hardware update. The downtime is probably caused by harddrive failure.
The official announcement in the Demonoid IRC channel is:
“Site offline for a few days while harddrives get replaced”
At this point it is still uncertain if any data is permanently lost or how long it will take to get things up and running. According to one of the admins It looks like the most recent data is lost for good. The good news is that there are backups, but these are a few days old.
Luckily the Demonoid trackers are not affected by the downtime. Demonoid is still one of the most used trackers, any downtime of the tracker will make thousands of torrents unusable in clients without DHT and multi-tracker support.
Update:
Demonoid placed this message on the frontpage:
We had a system problem which will force us to restore everything from backup. The disks are pretty much empty right now and until we are able to upload the backup and set up everything up, we have to close down.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demonoid_(BitTorrent) ... - Vodka2389, on 10/10/2007, -5/+100*****, Demonoid is probably the most important torrent site out there. It contributes more torrents to circulation that any other site, I believe.
- Starskey, on 11/11/2007, -15/+110That's what she said!
- EdwardoTheGreat, on 11/13/2007, -1/+93It's hard out there for a pirate.
- ajgv, on 10/10/2007, -2/+88dude! thanks for telling us! i don't know what i'd do if i hadn't learned about what you wanted to download today!
- cfsporn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+76First torrentbox, then isohunt and now this? Tonight I pray for mininova and piratebay... Candlelight vigil anybody?
- yagran, on 10/10/2007, -2/+74It'll be back. TPB won't sit back and let this happen, even if they are 'competition'
- Gsicht, on 11/13/2007, -3/+75You can click, but you can't hide!
I'm scared... not. - plaasjapie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+72Lets not be silly. Get the real news.

As of now, Nothing has been confirmed. - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -2/+70This is so not cool.
- booticon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+66I get my share ratio to 3.15 *then* it shuts down. Great.
- Monk22, on 10/10/2007, -4/+64im just gonna get this in at the top. the site is down for server upgrades. this is a bogus report.
- moo083, on 10/10/2007, -3/+57I highly disagree. I was almost always able to find was I was looking there, better than Pirate Bay.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+54Demonoid is not necessarily a 'private' tracker.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53Maybe you have to think a bit more outside the box on how you are going to continue to Use the interNet for filesharing.
- thomascirca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+50this is another bad development for the future of file sharing. first torrentspy is blocked from US users, then isohunt, and now this? time to hoist the sails and head to piratebay.
- ruyn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48When a website like Demoniod, which requires people to sign up and keep equal ratio goes down that is a huge blow. Plus I use this all the time.
- markzhen, on 10/10/2007, -5/+48Now Torrentfreak.com is down.... Arrghhhh. A conspiracy?
- dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41that ship sailed (pun intended) a long time ago when they realized it wasn't even remotely viable.
- r0b0, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45may I be the first to say...
***** THE CRIA!
Hope Canada's laws don't start to move toward being the same as the US, or else I'm going to move. - kinggimped, on 10/10/2007, -0/+38Noooooooooo, Demonoid rocked. Hopefully we'll see it back again soon...
- imgonnafart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+38I've been a pirate ever since the days when I used to record shows on VHS and give them to my friends to re-record onto another VHS.
Yearh, mateys, yeargh. - TaeK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36Why must this all happen this week? First Pirate Bay finds out about professional hackers and DDoSers hired by recording companies. Then comes IsoHunt, in which the MPAA has stopped all traffic from the US. TorrentBox followed suit... and NOW... demonoid, the most respected torrent lister.. taken down?!
COINCIDENCE? I hope so... - leahzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3609/25/07 Never Forget
- MrKrinkleDude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35Well that blows. Demonoid was the one site that had a guy post each weeks worth of Coast to Coast AM on a regular basis for over a year.
- leahzero, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37Dear Mr. Wannabe Elite Scene Insider,
Demonoid was technically a BIGGER tracker. No one was talking about Demonoid being the highest QUALITY tracker on the net, just the second BIGGEST (after TPB).
But did you feel more leet for finally posting the words "seedboxes" and "scene axx" on Digg? Now everyone knows you're a wannabe-scene *****! - jmontez, on 12/10/2007, -3/+36What tracker do we go to now? I'm not giving up the excellent ratios that private trackers offer without a good reason!!
- listed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34***** ***** *****!!
- Bartboy919, on 11/10/2007, -1/+32Ill get you CRIA, and this time, its personal.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30Yeah, dude, thats like you just said "Google has the best websites"
- BackEnThaWomb, on 11/10/2007, -1/+30you can say ***** here.
your mom will not find out. - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30DON'T TAZE DEMONOID, BRO!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27...Filesharing is legal in Canada??
- mooboy322, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30Blame Canada!
