- Doomtime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46ahem... i think he is talking about this
from the story: "Sony manufactured the batteries that are being recalled, the representative said." - LLeonard, on 10/12/2007, -13/+51Best. Comment. Ever.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -22/+60Hey douche bag, this has NOTHING to do with the console wars. Its about dell laptops!
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34I was just about to type a comment about this when I looked at my laptop's make and model - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Sony manufactured the batteries.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22"A new car built by my company leave somewhere traveling at 60 miles per hour. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field (A) multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B) then multiply the result by the average out of court settlement (C). A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of the recall, we don't do one."

(god I love a bad pun) - synd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@haooken: How about read the article next time? *****.
- tgilber, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Well, to be fair, the laptop batteries were manufactured by Sony... but probably not appropriate to bring up the console wars here.
- msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17wow.... thanks for pointing that out.
- michaelothomas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think UPS's stock just went up over this.

- bbear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Yup read the article. Sony made the gimp batteries.
- synd, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20Sony is such ***** nowadays.. Stick to what you do best, Sony.. CRT TVs.

- ryhalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's an apparent release from Dell:
http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20060814006094&newsLang=en - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does anyone know if this recall is international?
- FinishdLawSkool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is also more horrible PR for Sony.
- Eraserhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sony should pay for this. It is their batteries that are exploding in the Dell's.
More reasons to sell the Sony shares - WonkerSmack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Wow,
"Dell has faced several issues this year related to exploding or flaming notebooks, and wants to ensure the safety of its customers...and so they would like to offer everyone with a Dell notebook a flame retardent suit to surf the internets with." - molecool, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Dell has faced several issues this year related to exploding or **flaming notebooks**, and wants to ensure the safety of its customers, the representative said."
How gay!!! ;-) - funbags, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sweet! I get a new battery, mine was starting to loose its retaining power.
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I lost also. Too bad because my battery blows. I wanted a new one.
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"dude... you battery is melting..."
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That is too bad.
...oh and the battery thing too! - bbear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8It is official; Netcraft confirms: Sony is dying
One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Sony fanboy community when Digg confirmed that Sony exploding battery market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all exploding battery companies. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Sony has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Sony is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent E3 giant crab test.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Sony's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Sony faces a bleak future. - solusdotipse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow that was like playing the lotto and not wanting to win. "C544.......7. Phew!"
- nonsequiturmine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Those pics are for a previous recall, NOT the current one.
- jddigger272, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I went and found my invoice for my Dell Precision M60. I was happy to find out that I bought it before April of 2004. What I am not happy about is that I paid $3,936.57.
So instead of burning a hole in my legs it burned a hole in my wallet. - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Once again, sorry to top-post, but the official dell site is now up!
https://dellbatteryprogram.com/Default.aspx - AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4First rule of Digg Club . . . you don't talk about Digg Club
Second rule of Digg Club . . . don't post a link to a Digg story that has absolutely NO bearing on this conversation, you're spamming. Sell crazy somewhere else, we're all stocked up here. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is horrible PR for Dell but I guess it's still better than burning someone's house down.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Tensenki: As am I worried about this. The best thing we can do is show sony that we won't stand for this and boycott what they make.
- dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds like the Ford Pinto story from the 70's. Settling a few wrong-full death lawsuits was evidently cheaper than having a recall.
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@lakawak
No, when Apple does a recall, all the antifanboys shout out how terrible it is, and put the isolated flaw into lists of the "terrible problems with macs" in every post they can, trying to spread the false idea that every single apple laptop has a faulty battery. - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The site is now up
Just enter your battery ID (instructions on page) and it will tell you if you need a replacement:
https://dellbatteryprogram.com/Identify.aspx - Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Guess I know what I'll be doing at work tomorrow. We've got 20 Latitudes we bought for use in a production environment. They look nice, and are great when they work, but we've had 3 hardware failures in the first two weeks after they were deployed. Funny thing though, I was on the phone last week with dell after one was overheating bad and they didn't mention the battery as a possible culprit.
- AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Rub3X
"Yay my battery is affected. However I rather let the laptop burn and get a brand new one and have Dell replace w/e it ruins."
My guess would be since there is a recall out there, if you don't get the battery replaced Dell is not going to replace your laptop when/if it fries. Product recalls do two things legally:
1) They remove a defective and potentially hazardous product from the marketplace so no injuries or property damage occur through the use of said product
2) They remove liabilty from the product manufacturer and place it on the consumer in the event of a product failure. The company says, "We told you it was defective, and you continued to use it, we cannot be held liable for the consequences."
In short, replace your battery. It's not like it's costing you anything, so wtf?
Just checked my battery, and I don't win the lottery, mine's good . . . at least, until it blows up too and they add a new line of battery numbers to the list. Didn't Apple have a MacBook that blew up hardcore the other day too? I wonder if Sony made those batteries too, probably a big OEM operation. - Viral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dell won't bite the bullet for this. Yes, Dell is collecting all the batteries as part of a massive recall, and yes Dell is shipping replacement batteries from all available stock to try to meet the obvious demand, but Sony is getting slapped with the bill. Every battery that Dell collects is just more money out of Sony's pocket and into Dell's. Obviously since Dell is purchasing and shipping replacements the costs even up to where it shouldn't really cost Dell anything.
But Sony is indeed bollocksed, and it's also a bit of a burn in that the majority of the replacements sent out won't be Sony batteries; they'll be Samsungs and Panasonics and the like, and so in the long run Sony is basically paying out to those companies to help fix their *****.
But even though other companies haven't reported problems with Sony batteries, they also haven't shipped +4 million batteries with potential issues. And out of those 4 mill Dell shipped only 6 known issues have actually been documented, so even if other companies had the same faulty batteries and the exact same battery configuration as Dell nothing may actually come of it. Which in a way is good because I doubt you're going to see any other major recalls like this from other companies, except maybe from Sony themselves. - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And I'm glad I ditched that peice of ***** Inspiron 6000.
- marthaphoebe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What happens if I don't return my bad battery? Am I a terrorist?
- jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I do not get it?
If I sell you a brand new car, you drive away and around the corner it burns out.
will you:
a) Come back to me and claim your money back.
b) Go home walking thinking is your fault the car burned because you bought it.
can you post your answer? - kohno214, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is great. I get a new battery at no charge. I have heard that LT batteries generally last 2-3 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10So...let me get this staight...becuase I am not a piece of ***** Digg Apple fanboy...
When Apple issues a recall, they get "Good for Apple! They are doing hte right thing! This just shows that they truly care for their customers!" When Dell does it it is "bad PR for Dell."
Nice. - funbags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2take it out of the laptop.
- AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, you're not a terrorist. But if you don't return your battery, the terrorists will win.
- xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well ***** I have a Latitude D810...
