- captaingary, on 02/27/2009, -3/+54A small profit still beats a loss!.
- m3arvk, on 02/27/2009, -7/+40I own two Dells and they haven't let me down.
- L0NER, on 02/27/2009, -2/+33Time to bring the Dell Dude Back...
Better yet, a Dell Dude and Michale Phelps combo ad! - wewa, on 02/27/2009, -6/+32You'd be surprised how many 'tech-NOT-savvy' people think the name 'Dell' is synonymous with quality. Like the way IBM was a reputable name 20 years ago.
I just finished installing 4 brand new Dells (3 workstations and a server) and when I saw the invoice of the client who ordered them for their office, I flipped. $14k.
I could have set them up with nicer machines (HP, Acer, Compaq), displays and a NAS (which is all they need) for probably under $4k.
Stupid. They even signed up their domain and email hosting with Network Solutions! And that bill tripped me out as well!
And they went with PSTN instead of VOIP.
Talk about clueless. - Natnie, on 02/27/2009, -13/+36Well, they DO sell junk. I'm typing on one of their pieces of junk right now. I'm on my fourth AC Adapter in 2 years.
- nicnab, on 02/27/2009, -2/+24If I was Michael Dell, I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.
Kidding... what makes Dell interesting for companies is that they take a lot of the hassle out of dealing with the whole issue of IT lifecycle management. We buy their computers and printers and they take care of everything from the first investment to maintenance, service and then replacement. Sure others do that too but it actually works pretty ok with them.
Says me writing this on my Macbook Pro ;) - waydee, on 02/27/2009, -3/+22me.
For the money it was by far the best built and specced laptop available - completely beat the competition actually. All our computers at work are dells, they're neat little machines with good performance. - zeth006, on 02/27/2009, -6/+23Sounds like Macs.
- Tenareth, on 02/27/2009, -10/+27Odd, managed over 13,000 Dell machines, and despite the short-term power supply issue, they have nice longevity.
But your 1 computer is probably a better representative sample. - toxicpiano, on 02/27/2009, -0/+17I'm not sure what you think this article is about, but it's not about your iBook.
- robszol, on 02/27/2009, -2/+16Fix your damn outsourced tech support and maybe I'll stop hating you Dell.
- mr_ziy, on 02/27/2009, -0/+14Yes, and in these times companies should be satisfied with that (like Intel). They make it seem as if they're losing money -_-
- ronaldmonster, on 02/27/2009, -9/+20Doesn't help their computers are ***** and overpriced.
- Mardala, on 02/27/2009, -0/+9I installed plenty desktops for government work and we all know how governments like Dells ... what cost $14K? Seems a bit high to me.
One thing I liked about Dells though was some of their cases (not those older gray blob monstrosities that are left overs from several years back) but their cases were decent. Good airflow. Large grated front with a large fan that went across the cpu and motherboard to a big exhaust out the back.. Their tech support (at least what I had to deal with) was great. But then again they purchased the best tech support they could.
Also their monitors are not bad.
Their laptops I never cared for though. Not sure how their little "Eee PC Killer" is ... anyone try one of those? - shamo48, on 02/27/2009, -7/+16Dell Revenue = 13.4 Billion (16% decrease)
Dell Net Income = 351 Million (48% decrease)
Apple Revenue = 10.1 Billion (6% increase)
Apple Net Income = 1.6 Billion (2% increase)
It's all about a healthy profit margin...and, of course, good products. - vsujohn2, on 02/27/2009, -4/+13That has got to be one of the biggest BS stories I have ever heard. Yeh, you bought a ~700 dollar laptop and didnt like it so you just happened to have 1300 extra dollars lying around and bought the macbook. God you Apple fags are ridiculous.....
- waydee, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8Try using the online chat support if you can't make out the accents over the phone, I've done this before to get a new battery and the guy was great - I obviously knew the exact problem and he didn't beat around the bush reading from a script like they might do on the phone. New battery sent next day along with a phonecall the following day from the same guy making sure that the problem was solved.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8Funnily enough, a large number of mac users buy Dell displays.
- rolf, on 02/27/2009, -1/+9It be like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure>.>
"Dude, you just got a Gold Medal!"
"Woah!!" - rabidbob, on 02/27/2009, -2/+10I own one Dell and it's let me down; so has their customer "service".
- waydee, on 02/27/2009, -1/+9so wait, a cheap plasticy low end dell laptop felt worse to use than an expensive apple laptop?
no *****. - Warlock2019, on 02/27/2009, -4/+11Dude! noones gettin a dell!
- Lordy1952, on 02/27/2009, -0/+7though, the government seems to reward companies that fail ...
- DeadManWalking, on 02/27/2009, -2/+9C'mon Dell - you know what you need to do.
Slash the prices on your 30" LCDs
...
pretty please? - Natnie, on 02/27/2009, -3/+10It isn't only the power supply. The sides of the laptop monitor are coming apart. It won't be long before this thing loses the fight.
- chriscalifornia, on 03/31/2009, -1/+8That's because Dell used to be a budget brand. Now you're actually paying for the DELL name, and they are just another company.
- dipdog21, on 02/27/2009, -2/+8What kind of dell machines? I own a dell laptop and it has had 3 AC power supply issues as well as two battery replacements. My job gives me one to use and it has had the same type of issues. My boss owns a dell and has also had AC and battery problems. Our work laptop, my bosses laptop and mine have all had chassis cracking hinge cracking problems. The laptops used to be very sturdy but these newer generations just aren't as reliable. And their tech support SUCKS!!!
- sourabhg, on 02/27/2009, -1/+7Dell laptops are over priced in India.
- adml_shake, on 02/27/2009, -1/+7I know you might have gotten confused by all the comments but were talking about DELL not Apple. But your confusion is understandable.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -2/+8Apple's profit come almost entirely from iPods and iPhones. They have been losing money/making very little money on apple computers for a long time. This is why they got into the mp3 player and mobile phone business.
- Mardala, on 02/27/2009, -1/+6They are a rip off. Their customer support is up there with AT&T.
- dipdog21, on 02/27/2009, -3/+8Same here as well as on my 3rd battery.
- adml_shake, on 02/27/2009, -0/+5it was a reply to the guy above you
- ronaldmonster, on 02/27/2009, -0/+5Comparing Dell to Apple is like comparing ***** to diarrhea.
- yabos, on 02/27/2009, -2/+7This is exactly why Apple doesn't go for the cheap computer market. Dell may sell a lot of cheap computers but look what good it does them.
- djphatjive, on 02/27/2009, -25/+29Who buys a Dell. I mean really!
- secondwheel2, on 02/27/2009, -1/+5it may seem high because wewa is full of *****
***** lying ***** - wolfing, on 02/27/2009, -3/+7I still recommend Dell to whoever asks. Not because they're good, but because if I said any other brand they'd be like 'oh, can you come with me to Best Buy there are too many and I saw this ___ for $1800 is that good?'. Dell has ok computers with good prices, and the best thing, I don't have to freaking go with you to Best Buy
- jocknerd, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4Dell's all about sell at a loss and make up for it in volume.
- ifonly, on 02/27/2009, -0/+4.com $35.00 USD for 1 year. Also they hijack peoples domain search queries, order the domain themselves and then try to sell it back to the searcher for a higher price.
- wjlaw100, on 02/27/2009, -2/+6But the Tech support is a local phone call away.....
- vsujohn2, on 02/27/2009, -2/+6I just read one of your previous comments, and damn, you really are retarded.... "I would seed all the files I download, but the problem is that my Logitech VX Revolution's receiver doesn't like uploading data, so it makes my mouse unusable. And I'm not about to use the trackpad when I have a mouse option available. It's too bad, because Logitech is easily the best PC peripheral company and the VX is supposed to be their flagship notebook mouse." From http://digg.com/mods/10_Ways_To_Speed_Up_Torrent_D ...
The comments afterward are hilarious - socomoddjob, on 02/27/2009, -4/+7i would NEVER buy a dell.
- bentman78, on 02/27/2009, -1/+4The USAF, The National Academies of Science are two big customers I've worked for that have large number of Dell servers and workstations.
I'm sure there is many, many others. Their enterprise offerings and service are teh best I've encountered. HP sucks. - SamSks, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3Lenovo baby! That's where I'm at!
Great price and so far, they've been working quite well. - bbear, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3The Dell XPS systems are well built and a good option for people who don't have the time to build their own PC. I bought an XPS 630 for someone and was impressed with the build quality.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxwG5wa9uBY - phr0ze, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3Apple has plenty of problems. They just don't respond and the fanboys keep it hush hush.
- adml_shake, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3I bought a XPS 420 system a few months back and I just ordered a M1530 2 weeks ago. I've been a Dell customer for a while and have generally always been very happy with them.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -3/+6Yawnnnn. No one cares about the little pro-Mac story you just made up.
Watch how easy it is toi live in fantasy world:
When I got my first laptop, I went with the MacBook Pro. I got it 2 weeks alter and withing 19 minutes of using it, I HATED it and returned that piece of ***** back to them. Later that day, I spoke to a classmate who was carrying around a handful of donkey *****. I asked her if I could hold it and within minutes, I knew that I didn't need a aptop anymore and purchased some donkey ***** that day. So basically I went from hating Apple and returning their laptop to loving donkey ***** and buying some within a time frame of 3 hours.
Using your logic, it is now a fact that a handful of donkey ***** is better than a MBP - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -0/+3you should not invest if you don't understand. They BEAT their expectations.
"Excluding one-time expenses, Dell earned 29 cents a share, 3 cents better than the consensus forecast of Wall Street analysts, according to Thomson Reuters. "
The current stock price is based on expectations. Hence more people will invest at the current price. -
