- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36A large number of the profiles are bots, spammers, and unused accounts. Still seems like a large number though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40The question is do these "Real" people have a "Real" life? Answer is... nope.
- Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35"So we looked at accounts 25,000,000-25,000,100 , 50,000,000-50,000,100, and 100,000,000-100,000,100."
So, you looked at 300 accounts, in three chunks of the database? 300/100,000,000 = 0.0003% of the total mySpace population. And you are making a sweeping statement based on that? It would be a far better idea if you took 300 random ids from 0-100,000,000, because otherwise multiple sign ups in a row can screw up the stats.
I feel like I have to mark the article as inaccurate, but if you get better statistics, I think you've hit a good point. Oh - and you are certainly right, the numbers are inflated, I just disagree with your decision to use your stats to make a sweeping statement about 100,000,000 accounts.
(edit: paulmike3 beat me to it: Random samples are a better choice) - AhmedF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26The number at least is slightly indictive of the real # of users at MySpace, much more realistic than 100,000,000.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29what! you mean all those porn stars are not real?
- paulmike3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Ordered samples are not random. Bots and spammers don't necessarily create accounts here and there. Most likely they create dozens at a time, making ordered "samples" highly inaccurate. Random samples would be better.
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16yeah, but at least myspace is prettier than that article
- EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I want to see an article titled: "How myspace managed to take $500 million, and not improve the bandwidth troubles, or server errors that plauge it 24/7."
Seriously, where did all that money from Fox go, because obviously their IT department got nothing. - Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12this reminds me of the claim that there are 100 million PS2 owners because 100million PS2's were sold.
unfortunately that number doesnt take into account the millions of gamers who have replaced their PS2 due to it breaking. (i myself have gone through 3) - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I would argue that #5 should also count towards "real" users, since you don't have to log in to know that you got a message... it sends you an email if someone sends you one. I often go more than a week without logging in, only because I know there isn't anything worth reading. I do log in occasionally to browse other users and do searches, and maybe even read other people's bulletins, but most of the time they're stupid chain letters.
It's become fashionable to bash Myspace because of the immature and amateur sites that it holds, but the draw of it is a central location that you can find people, keep up with events in your friends' lives, and it's highly customizable. Most people don't have any taste for website design... that's a sad fact of life that the techno-geek crowd on Digg will have to live with long after Myspace is dead and gone. No matter what you think of the users on Myspace, it's still an effective tool for keeping in touch with people... which is exactly what it's meant to do. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i wonder how many individuals have multiple accounts at MySpace...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You should have them hire you to manage one of the most popular sites on the internet. Its like saying why don't all of the World of Warcraft servers always run smoothly and without lag what is my money used for? Well places like Myspace and WoW are still pioneers in social management of huge ***** databases with millions and millions of accountings being hit constantly. Its hard to beta test a "new" type of product for millions and millions of people.
- lysander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Echoing Kilroy2004, pump up the data size for more accurate results.
- tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They're probably counting visitors as users. Given the company was founded by spammers in the first place it's not surprising they would inflate their traffic.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5He does count #5s as real users.
Also, if you've ever tried to customize your profile, you'll know that MySpace was *never* intended to be customizable. It's a ***** of HTML tables (c. 1995) and CSS elements that were chosen at random by some demonic algorithm in the depths of Tom's subconscious mind. - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Kilroy: But if it was designed specifically to fill a niche market, then people wouldn't listen to it. Before Myspace became popular, I never went to an indie music site with the intent of finding some band that I might like... but with Myspace, I can see other people who share the same taste in music, and I can try any bands they recommend. That's the point! If you created a site dedicated to it, it wouldn't have the userbase, which would defeat the purpose!
- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@paulmike3:
Yes, but MySpace still sucks ass. - Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@omatsei - Good point.
However, I would argue that a site like Netflix does a better job of telling me movies I'd be interested in based on my prior interests and my friends' interests than a site like MySpace (or Facebook) does.
If the social network is designed from the start to support that kind of sharing-of-interests, it is going to be more successful at its goal. Since MySpace wasn't designed to interpret user data and spit out 'suggestions,' it can never fill that niche the way it should. - Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you read the article, you would see that there is a way to visit every userID's MySpace. It is unlikely that for every visitor, another ID is created.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5underlined sucks.....and this is why
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Tazamore is right- Myspace was created and originally funded by two of the nets most notorious email spammers and spyware creators.
You think the word "honesty" is even in their vocabulary? Think again.
Myspace is nothing more than geocities with the ability to play mp3s when someone views the page. That's the entire business model.
Web 2.0 my ass. It's the same ***** scam with a different name. Take someone else's material, create a free community around it, and then sell out to the highest bidder who thinks they can advertise to all the users. Is this really all the internet can be?
Web 2.0 = socialize the content, privatize the profits. - siodine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"The results were, to say the least, underwhelming:"
What the hell? I hate myspace as much as the next sane person, but 43 million users is a hell of a lot...
Theres more people visiting myspace everyday than people watching the #1 and #2 rated shows in the US. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just like Digg has no where near 500,000 members.
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This process didnt even include accounts like those movie characters, porno girls, and other fictious characters who probably have multiple accounts.
- AhmedF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2'Web 2.0 = socialize the content, privatize the profits.' - awesome quote :)
- Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@loates - MySpace is generally considered as the website of choice for middle schoolers and high schoolers. College students generally prefer TheFacebook. Although, now that Facebook has opened its gates to the public and not just .edu addresses, some are worried that it will turn into another MySpace. We'll just have to wait and see...
- Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All that means is that MySpace is filling a niche in the market (allowing undiscovered music talent to be discovered). I would argue that MySpace was not designed to fill that niche -- and it would be much more successful if a different site geared to that purpose filled it instead.
- Conundrum28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't that just viral marketing?
- origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ha! You dont even know how to wear a hat properly!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The problem with mySpace is the signal-to-noise ratio. Sure, you can find some good bands but you have to suffer through dozens of terrible ones first. (and try to avoid going blind looking at the HORRIBLE colors & fonts people use) I like the idea of MySpace I just think it's a crappy implementation which also happens to be owned by Fox. Eventually a site is going to come out that gets it right and mySpace will be just another burst internet bubble.
Also, if you're looking to find new music try last.fm - psychotron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Gee, I wonder who you work for? If you are going to be a plant at least don't make it THAT obvious. On the plus side, you stayed away from using "kewl" so I'll give you credit for that.
- Conundrum28, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm glad someone finally pointed out why people actually hate MySpace, not the notorious claim that it's people who are simply anti-mainstream because it's the 'trendy' thing to do.
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that's a nice website
- Conundrum28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Killroy, that site already exists. Pure Volume is specifically geared toward tracking the touring dates and news of already signed bands, as well as local and unsigned bands. Aside from the fact that it's been recently destroyed by the constant garbage accounts where people think it's hilarious to record themselves doing what many would consider "Will Shatner" (or, simply, anything non-resembling of music), it's actually quite usefull.
- Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The article is written purely about the 100,000,000 MySpace account IDs. Obviously the number of visitors is going to be different than the number of accounts created -- but that isn't the point of this article.
- ritec, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Well I got signed to a minimal techno label thanks to the music I posted on myspace. Yes it does have a sucky ass interface and yes it sucks because Fox bought it but it does serve a purpose... For me anyway, I have a myspace music profile and I get about 50 listens a day that I wasn't getting before, more power to me.
I can understand why, a lot of people say it sucks as anything popular will always have good and bad reviews, but in all honesty that is just hating for no reason. Did Myspace do anything to you, hurt your family beloved ones or stabbed you in the eye? No. So why are you spending energy and time hating and hating and hating, there is too much of that in the world already. I am not saying you need to love it, but it does expose bands and new music to the world. Just yesterday I discovered a lovely French band that I had no idea existed thanks to, well Myspace.
That is all for now myspace haters... I love you all!.; ) - jetpeach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i'm not trying to hide the fact that i know the guy who started it! heck, look at my friends list on there and he's on it (and this isn't like myspace where _everybody_ is friends with whatever his name is...). he's probably commented on my blogs in the past as well.
but that doesn't take away from the fact that the site kicks ass. what other social networking site compares with the features on Zoji? - bigdaddyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We're not going to look at your swt profile and leave cmmnts. Stop it.
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WHATEVAR HIS NAEM IS!!!???????!!!!!!!
HOW DARE U SPK AGANSIT TOM LIKE TAHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TOM SI HTE ALL MIGHTIE RULER OF THE MYSPACE UNAVERSE!!111!!!!!!!!!! - imnsi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Those pie charts are very unclear. Add some labels maybe.
- jetpeach, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I look forward to when people stop using myspace, it is so ghetta and other sites are much much better. check out my zoji profile and see a well-run social networking site with unlimited photo uploading/sharing, email, blogging, a gmail-like chat system built in, evite feature parody (ability to see whose viewed your invitation etc), all in a nice looking CSS layout interface.

here is the about page for the guys behind Zoji

Also, you can import your myspace or facebook profile when you sign up.
GET THE CORPORATIONS OUT OF YOUR SOCIAL LIFE! - loates, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2More people on mySpace than watching the top rated shows on TV... thats because I would dare say that most of the users of mySpace are college students. When I was in college (only 2 years ago), I hardly watched TV. I was more loyal to my favorite web sites than my favorite TV shows too. Although, I did watch every single Friends episode that existed......
- LostPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2what about all the users without accounts? who just use it for new music? the number prob is inflated, however i feel this auther did not include a large vaule of myspace users without accounts.
- bigdaddyk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Still amazes/frightens me that 40m people see something in myspace
- rbug, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4exactly what i was thinking Kilroy
- gappodi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11 user/account = $5 valuation of the company.
Who wouldn't want to pump up the number of users. - origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Oh boy, more MySpace hate. You haters need to get a hobby or something. So what if its users vs accounts . Who cares. Besides, Some the users have multiple personalities. Where are those extra users accounted for?
- coryp420, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0http://www.myspaceisgay.com/
- CalPaterson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3That's my number one use of it, at least.
