- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21This model isn't even sold by Apple anymore.
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Processor: Core Duo
RAM: 512 MB
Storage: 80 gb
Optical: 4x SuperDrive
Sound: Whine - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12This is a bargain. In the UK, this model costs $2600!
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Dual-core 1.83GHZ is slow? Since when?
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13"Yeah, honestly. I can get a pretty powerful gaming rig for several hundred dollars less, with much more powerful hardware that can run a lot of awesome games. True, I won't be able to lug it around with me wherever I go, but it would still be a far better value than this damn thing."
Apples are not "gaming rigs." Some people use computers for other things than Digg and games. - Chmarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its the 1.83GHz model. Amazon claims it's new. It's probably old stock that was still around when the speed-bump occurred.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Apple's refurb on this unit is $1550 for this unit. Go check...
- mayana, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9And to really crunch the numbers, check out this Excel worksheet that lets you find out the cheapest MacTel deal between Amazon, Apple and their Developer program (http://www.mactelchat.com/showthread.php?t=50)
- Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Apple has their refurb version of this model for even less, not including tax (which might bring it up to Amazon's price), for $1,549.00: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/1114001/wo/uX1o6e61qhkc2NhtGl62ojABGwC/1.0.0.19.1.0.8.7.3.5.1.1.7.1.5.1.0.5.0
But at least there's no rebates! - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7There's a lot more to OSX then what you've seen in screenshots.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because the Mac fanboys think it's a friggin bargain.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Does it moo? Coz I don't want a macbook trhat can't do cow impressions!
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And there's a sale at penny's - Who the ***** cares!
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6actually, you make a good point. However, I'm sure there are hardware differences (remember the Pro model has a dedicated gpu card)
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6While not to take away from the fact that this is a bargain, they are probably trying to clear out the 1.83GHz models, since Apple made it 2.0GHz for the base model. That being said, the extra 170MHz is not worth the extra $350. I would suggest getting it from MacMall (www.macmall.com) for the same price. They even have the new 2.0 model for $1844. http://www.macmall.com/macmall/families/macbookpro/
- fatejudger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A $1,650 laptop is a deal?
- pollicis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_6400?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs
I can't link to my actual checkout cart but here's the link to the product... It won't let me downgrade to only 512MB RAM. This is configured with a 2.0Ghz Core Duo which also can't be downgraded... and at $1269.00, its $381.00 cheaper than your MBP, and equipped with a faster processor, double the memory, bigger harddrive and faster videocard.

^ what your machine wont do - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Not really true. Cause I have enough money to buy one, but I rather not spend extra money like people said for a shiny case, and a toaster for my balls.
- mixrecords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got this model MBP from Guitar Center during one of their holiday sales. They sell Apple products and tend to put deep discounts on models that are no longer current. I paid $1500 in tax free New Hampshire. With the Guitar Center credit card I got 18 months of 0% interest, the only way I could rationalize the purchase.
- illegalamigo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd wait for further MBP revisions. With the problems they're having now, it probably isn't worth the headache of buying an early revision MBP.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"there is nothing that an Apple computer can do that Linux or Windows cannot do"
Not true. Some of the stuff you can do with Applescript is simply amazing.
A posix implementation (such as Linux) can do similar (but different) amazing things with the concept of piping and so forth, but Windows? I laugh in your general direction.
Now if only more software sellers would allow for more than the basic Applescript functionality, that would truly rock my lame world. - pollicis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jwoelich -- grow up buddy. All of the major laptop makers have had battery problems at some point in time, including Dell AND Apple. This is probably because the underlying cells are all made in the same factory in China.
@chiptinder -- you're getting closer... There's a $250.00 discount on that model that expires on July 21, thus your $130 + 250 = my $381.
@everyone.. You guys asked for a link, it only took me 30 seconds to find this Dell deal. I'll just assume at this point that the Apple fanboys here are just too stupid, blind or lazy to check for themselves. I'm no fanboy of Dell, and I've had problems with they're keyboards in the past, but seriously, for the price, there are few rivals -- and this includes Apple. - duke, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Yeah, I'm gonna' run out and buy 3 or 4 of those!!
/sarcasm - cclark2222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can wait about 1 1/2 months and get the same laptop on eBay for around 1300-1400...
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5--> "NO ONE IS DUMB ENOUGH TO PAY"
you know what? you are stupid. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The HP and MacBook Pro are hardly the same laptop. Don't be dense. 6 months from now, there's going to be a GQ laptop selling with those specs for $400.
The HP has an Intel graphics card, no DVD-writer, slower processor speed, slower memory, slower hard drive with less capacity, and the screen is 1280x800. That's not a competitor to the MacBook pro, more a competitor to the MacBook.
It's still a nice computer. ;-) Wish I could have picked one up at that price.
The challenge isn't to find a //cheaper// notebook to the MacBook Pro, but one with the same features for less. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7kalisphoenix, there is nothing that an Apple computer can do that Linux or Windows cannot do. The only difference is the "package" in which the stuff is presented.
Now, the reason I mentioned gaming rigs is because they are the most expensive type of computer available, with the most powerful components. So, since I can buy a decent gaming rig, which is far more powerful, for LESS than this notebook computer, then the question seems obvious: how is this a "deal of the day" in any rational universe?
I have nothing against Apple. But, brands and misguided corporate loyalties aside, I can get a FASTER and BETTER computer for LESS than this. - chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have a 1.83 mbp, no problems to speak of.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm You must be pretty lazy.... Dell.com Under Laptops
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Some people use computers for other things than Digg and games."
You mean, as fashion accessories and symbols of perceived coolness? - pollicis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My bad, you're right, the x1600 is faster. But is it worth almost $400 more? Not to mention the MBP comes with half the RAM and a slower CPU. I'll take the Dell with double RAM, faster CPU and $400 extra in my pocket anyday. I might even buy a shiny new video ipod with the money I saved.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The MacBook Pro has a dual-DVI link (with a VGA adapter), so you can hook up one monitor to it and use the internal screen. You could hook up the 30" monitor from DELL to it, for example, to view the 30" monitor at 2560x1600 and still use the built-in MacBook Pro monitor at 1440x900.
I don't know of a DELL laptop that lets you hook up two external monitors to it. - linuxps2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cwcheang, look at my name retard, i run linux, now whos dumb as hell.... oh yeah YOU
- chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I came up with 1419.00 for the dell, 130.00 less than what i paid for the mbp mentioned in the ad.
- dss311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jwoelich
Typo. Should read Core "2" Duo - pizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an older, discontinued model! Apple even sells it for this price! Why is this on Digg ?!?!?
- Chmarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zybch: No, but it can do sheep impersationations, is that good enough?
(System Preferences, Speech, Text to Speech, System Voice: Bahh)
(Aside: Awesome! My captcha string today is DAM2K) - firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you're on to something there... aside from the dual layer burner. I think it's only single layer.
- analogAI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of my laptop purchasing requirements is to have a high resolution LCD. Although 1440x900 screen resolution is already pretty good, doesn't beat some dell 15" laptops that can have the 1920x1200 WUXGA option. When is apple going to offer a dock that allow two external monitors (dvi+vga) connected to it or it's just something I don't know about?
If you have a MBP, maybe you can answer my questions... - redsrule2500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah wonderful deal. I could get a much better laptop from HP, Gateway, Dell for MUCH cheaper.
- dss311, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Amazing anyone would pay that much for a mac. I can't wait for the new PC laptops with an Intel Duo Core processor inside. Now that will be a REAL LAPTOP.
Mac=Twice the price, ½ the performance! - pipebender, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because once upon a time one of c|net's company's name was called "News.Com". Therefore the website for the "New.Com" would ofcourse be "new.com" + ".com". Seems logical to me.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@DarkSideofMoon
I agree those apple programs are expensive.....
Maybe if your a complete retard you would spend more than the price difference of a PC vs mac.
I guess a mac would be good for you then. How's photoshop on your macbook "pro"?
"Mac. Nobody gives a *****." (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20060513) - lostcny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An Excel sheet? Wow you're looking to distribute a virus aren't ya?
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why must i be a early adopter. and i thought my education discount was good1799 for the samething"
Oh, hi Leo, didn't see you come in! - keikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's the "deal of the day" because it's much cheaper than it used to be and thusly a "deal". sure i used to be like you thinking that why spend the cash on a mac when i can go and build a nice new gaming machine. well i decided to get myself a brand new macbook pro instead. why? because i need a mobile computer and i like my things to look nice and work well. what offers those two things? a mac. i'm not a mac fanboy or anything, in fact, i was quite the opposite a few years ago before os x premiered. so suck it up just because you don't appreciate the sleek design of the macbook line.
