- latova, on 10/12/2007, -12/+84Can I have a side order of NSA Wiretapping with that?
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42its part of the package
- NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29But how much bandwidth a month before they cut you off?
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Sadly, my dad has to use NetZero because the only DSL station that serves his neighborhood is Frontier Communications. They require a one year subscription. If you don't bundle in a phone line then the first 3 months of DSL are $29.99 and the next 9 months are $80+!! This is what happens when there's no competition in town!
- Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32What makes you think the NSA is interested is your scat fetish and shoe perversions?
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20The fact is that most people still have landlines.
- johnc3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Anything that competes with comcast is good
- rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14AT&T wants to charge you per download eventually and is AGAINST net neutrality. Don't buy into this BS.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@Langford
That's assuming $10/mo is a loss. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Don't worry, eventually they'll re-buy all the mini companies that split off from them until they're the only game in town.. again. Then you'll have to buy AT&T.
- mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Actually you can get "naked DSL" without a phone line for a slightly higher price than the regular package. This has been true since the SBC & AT&T merger. So actually it's just like how the cable companies charge customers more for a high speed internet service if you don't have their cable TV service.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9$10.00 a month for DSL? Be careful for what you wish for. Bellsouth has been playing around with something called DSL Lite.
My mom is a Bellsouth customer. She gets these flyers in her phone bill all the time. What is DSL Lite? All the speed of DSL, with all the benefits for half the cost.... right? Wrong.
A equipment charge of $200.00. A connection charge of $200.00. No newsgroup access. Monthly download limit to 1GB. Capped limited speed to 350 kilobits per second. 1 Email account.
...and at the end of your contract you can kiss your 10 bucks a month good-bye... and say hello to 15 dollars a month.
This is not a good deal. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Yeah! I'm with Langford! Those dirty bastards want to give us cheap broadband! How DARE they?!
- shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5maybe just maybe your being dugg down since you have nothing to do with the topic
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Do any of you who think it's just competition really believe that smaller companies can afford to sell at AT&T's promised price? This is a clear case of a large company being willing to take a loss on a product so that they can kill off smaller companies. They want to turn a near-monopoly into a true monopoly.

MaBell says a lot of things. - maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7too bad all your personal data belongs to them once you sign up
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't see how this is a good deal. 786K download speeds barely classifies as broadband and you've gotta buy a land line ($$$) It's good marketing sure but it's not a good deal.
- beachbrian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7only ATT offer naked dsl, and they believe that will suffice to congress as part of the terms of the merger. But naked DSL from ATT costs as much or more than bare basic phone service and dsl. Of coarse the only cable around here is comcast, and thats 50 bucks. DSL wins...but aTT sucks.
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@klpowell:
If the price is below their costs (which it isn't, mind you; take a look at Europe's broadband. I'd guess this price is at-or-near cost.), it's called predatory pricing.
It's not, however, in this case.
Still, they'll have a hard time getting existing broadband users to switch; Cable users are entrenched in the idea that Cable is better than DSL, and DSL customers have a federally mandated 30 day period between switching between DSL providers (a regulation I'd like shoved up a number of regulators' asses). This, however, will attract dial-up users like honey for flies.
Good for AT&T; it's about time broadband became competitive in price with dial-up. - akblackwel, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14DSL for $10 is BS. No one ever talks about the fact you "have" to have a land line. Then SBC or whoever you get phone service from will gouge you on that. Cable's still cheaper when you add that in.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4cheap, but i'd stick with cable or upgrade to FIOS instead
- oneiroi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Low Price = More Subscribers = More Wiretapping = The Government's plan for world wide wire tapping and domination.
or something like that - TexMurphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4AT&T Inetrnet Services

I do, I was one. Back in college I was working on a HUGE 3D design project with another person and I was at a remote campus. So, we were sharing several gigabytes a day. One day my 2.5meg Verizon DSL connection slowed to a crawl, like 56K crawl. I called Verizon to see what was up, only for them to inform me that I was a "Level 1 Bandwidth Abuser" and that my account had been flagged. Keep in mind this is in a small town in Indiana. They informed that only software pirates could possible be using as much bandwidth as I was using, so I must be doing something illegal. I could live with the current capped speed or cancel my service. I canceled my service and went with cable, I haven't been back since. - neszis, on 10/12/2007, -17/+21Umm, it's called capitalism, not monopoly.
- MacsBaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@flechdonkey
Land wiring isn't perfect but I can say this much. In my 6 years of living in my apartment I have never had my phone line phone line fail. I have had my cable lines fail. Also, the one or two times I did not pay my phone bills one time and they shut me off they did not revoke the DSL specifically to avoid any problems with getting me back up and running. Once I paid I just reset my modem and router and everything was fine. This was all with SBC/AT&T. - Tawni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*Gets the tinfoil hats out*
- klpowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of 2 companies should not control the broadband access but the government should? So you would rather have no choice and have to put up with the government for you service? Have you ever been to the DMV? The Water Dept? The IRS? You want these people to control you entertainment as well?
- j3one, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6AT&T? been there, done that... (freaking sbc)
I say no. - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As a SBC Yahoo DSL user, I can say I'm not very happy with the speed or the reliability. And I'm like 1000 feet within the Office. Its terribly slow most of the time, and if I get dropped it stays that way for hours.
But I have no choice, its either $15 a month for SBC Yahoo DSL or $60 a month for Comcast Cable. Comcast is just not an affordable option for me, so I'm stuck. Before SBC Yahoo DSL there was this great DSL (for the time) provider that was reasonable ($20/m for 786K-1.5Mbps) and it had the best customer service and reliability.
Saddly they were put out of business by SBC. - jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try RoadRunner Light if you don't mind a speed of 768 down/128 up....always $27 a month.
- croxis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Usually in the US there are no monthly caps. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but the only cases I know of are services in other countries.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stupid digg ate my comment.
Anyhow, those are the worst lyrics ever.....seriously.
*shakes head* - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -19/+22So 30 months is how long they expect it to take for the smaller competition to die off from their monopoly tactics?
- haobaba1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So if your right then AT&T so much as admitted that once it acquires its monopoly status it is going to dump DSL at below market rates for 30 months to kill any competition that may exist. You think this is good? I guess in the short term that it is good, but I doubt this is how AT&T executives are thinking about it.
- curunir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The FCC is more likely to approve the deal if they feel it's going to help the underprivileged gain access to the Internet."
I call bulls***. If the FCC cared about the "underprivileged", they would stop giving the phone companies everything they ask for. - Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, 786K isn't super fast, but for people like me that live in areas where the only other option is dial-up (because cable TV access is not present), the price is pretty good. I have the 1Mb download speed for $15 a month, and I love the service.
The problem with getting the "naked" DSL, is that after all is said and done, it will end up costing you just about the same as getting basic phone access and DSL. - Paisleyfrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Strictnein
Two things. First, Roadrunner offers a "Lite package" which is a 768kB line. They currently gouge...er, charge...$26.95 a month for it. Competition would be nice to bring that price down.
Second, some of us don't live in our parent's basement and have to pay rent. I would appreciate a lower price option, in spite of having two jobs. - dagr8tim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cincinnati Bell is already doing something similar. The hook, is to get the DSL for that cheap price, you have to get unlimited local & LD which is $39.95 per month + taxes and fee's.
- tewas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well my parents have AT&T DSL now and it is cheaper (local and long distance service is included) than cable (i have roadrunner in my apartment). But I'm not fan of AT&T and once contract with them expires i moving my folks to cable.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@langford
"Do any of you who think it's just competition really believe that smaller companies can afford to sell at AT&T's promised price"
You honestly believe that $40+ per month is a FAIR price for broadband?
If so, the RIAA has $20 CDs they're willing to sell you.
The ability to sell at a lower price does not equate to the company being a monopoly.
Besides, It's a step in the right direction.
Cheap-ass broadband. WhyTF are you complaining?
Stop being such a cynic. - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3786K is plenty for some people.
Take my parents for example. There is no point in them paying $45 a month just so they can browse the internet. So instead they pay $15 for 786K DSL. - onwardknave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sell my browsing history to the government for $10?? AT&T Customers say yes!
- theonesteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And the point of that poorly-formatted and horribly mangled replica of a bill was...what? The NSA Wire Tap line?
Not to mention you left your phone number (415-273-8364) on there, although you caught the one above it. - shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's all about skype!
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i have bellsouth dsl...so hopefully theyll bump my speed up to the advertised 768 kb/s
- asauterChicago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Jaymoon
Well this was a 5 years ago ;-), but in all fairness, at that time I was paying like $150.00 a month for that level of DSL service. However, truth of the matter is I don't trust any of the major telcos (AT&T, Verizon, etc..), I think their service stinks, I think they try to run their business like the mafia, and it could be free for all I care and I'm still not giving them my business on principle, period. I'm sorry if this makes me sound like a crotchy old man :-) -
