- joejordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hypocrite. Don't bash DRM if your going to start a DRM movie service. Pick a side.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11he mentions ad-supported free downloads of content as an alternative to DRM
smart man. - beorhthelm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6But its too simplistic. what happens when the advertising budgets dry up for what ever reason? what happens to the niche content that large ad budgets aren't attracted to? i dont have the answer, but this isnt it.

There is no DRM scheme that's unbreakable, and there never will be. The sooner the record companies and movie industry realise this, the sooner they'll start making and releasing product that's good eough to PAY for!
At the moment, the material distributed by the major record labels and film studios is generally abysmal (though there's the occasional nugget amongst the dross) and just not worth paying to hear or see.
The bizarre thing is that they blame their ever-reducing sales on piracy, when it's just that nobody's actually interested in their "product" anymore! - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No DRM is old and busted as well, unfortunately. People can't be trusted.
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2doesn't everyone and their grandma block ad's because of the nuisance they are
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2time for a new hotness
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can't be trusted to what? Prop up a failing and outdated business model to thier own detriment? No, I suppose they can't. If we could copy cars at no cost, we'd do that too. Ford and GM would go out of business, and millions of people would need a new line of work. But more people would be able to design and make changes to cars using the same tech we'd use to copy them, and a new industry would pop up. All but a very few would be much better off for it.

- manageMyRights, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Burning them to an audio cd is NOT equal to transferring (which refers to a lossless bit by bit copy). Burning is more like putting a digital tape recorder in you speaker jack. Apple 'allows' this because there's nothing they can do to stop it (see analog hole).
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1" in order to increase their reach without losing money to file sharing " ,but wont the same media/video/content he helps provide legally thru his future venture will also be available thru torrents ? im not saying he didnt hit any points head on, but people hate equally ads/commercials that interfere in their viewing of video files , just like they hate/avoid paying for said content....he's on a good direction but i dont think that direction will stop people from getting their content illegally...
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"citing iTunes for not allowing consumers to transfer purchases between platforms or hardware environments"
Strangely innaccurate, since I do exactly that. And they collect a tax on every CD-R I buy, so we're quits.
DRM isn't obsolete (yet), but the ***** UK television license should be. - MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good point that's why i think this venture will place him between a " rock and a hard place " and the companies that do decide to distribute their content with him will make him choose a side , because you cant serve 2 masters at the same time per say
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The challenge for the copyright holder is to have a great product. DRM might not fit that bill. It could go away in time.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What's intrinsicly wrong with giving something they want until they come to the conclusion themselves that it is inferior?
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3If anything, the creator of the largest illegally downloaded files through his creation SHOULD know the best route to making a good legal service...
- icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2to me, there's no way to protect a digital media that locks to just one person/family...if you allow the media to be used freely, you have to sacrifice security....but no or little security will make digital media spread throughout the internet...
i just don't know where the copy protection will go.....
