- johanm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38*looks up Alturism on Wikipedia*
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Donated 30 bucks. If you're poor, $5 will still make a difference...even less if you can't do that.
Wikipedia is changing the world, let's all be a part of it. Long live Altruism! - Beetlesweb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35I'm glad this site still relies on donations from the little people as opposed to being owned and controlled by an uber-corporation! dugg!
- Rooker156, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37too bad they weren't matching a few days ago when they got the 200k+ donation :(
- appletalk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33They were and I think they did.
http://fundraising.wikimedia.org/ reads:
Q: Why did the meter jump up over $200,000?
A: We added the anonymous matching donation. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30I Donated $10... Hey, I'm only 16 and should be asleep right now. SHH!
+donated - copperhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Oh, it's a company! I thought "Virgins Unite" was another name for "Digg". :-)
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -12/+38ICSU, don't be a dick...
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21This is just one of many reasons that Richard Branson is my favorite crazy billionaire.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It's so easy to be cynical of philanthropy. Yes it'll benefit Virgin's image, but that's not the only reason why Branson did this. People can actually be genuinely altruistic you know, we're not all two-faced money-grabbing bastards.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14+donated
- Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Digg is cool, I saw the live contributions lists increasing steadily fast enough. I just donated $100. ;-)
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is really cool and all but Other company's have been matching since the fund raiser started. I can only remember a few days when some company wasn't matching funds. Either way its a good idea to donate. I cant think of too many more worthy groups.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's $50 to an awesome cause (plus Virgin's $50) - and look, guys, it's tax-deductible! If you have a job, put your money where you want it instead of leaving that job for the gov't.
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Wikipedia isn't stating from whom the 200,000 match came from. It's a safe assumption to point to Virgin Unite, but I doubt Virgin Unite would do anything 'anonymously'. Branson's ventures DEPEND on media attention. An anonymous match doesn't give him that.
- kritik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7they deserve every penny
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Agreed. Information should be provided by the people for the people and not in bias by one or two companies.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wikipedia = Free Information = Free Education = Free Knowledge = Action against all the problems you mention.
- daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13@jacnet......3yen!! Seriously, that's like 2.5 cents. Or $0.025. When you factor in the electricity and your time not to mention the time of someone at wikimedia.......that's a lost for everyone!
If i told anyone here that there were $0.025 on the front lawn.....would you go outside, bend over, pick it up and come back inside? Or will you say "screw it", it's not worth the time and hassle. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe oogee is that wheelchair kid from Malcolm in the Middle.
- Wyzard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Donating to wikipedia is donating to communism."
Yay for sensational FUD. How about supporting your claim?
There's a difference between communism and cooperation. - infowar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7donated 1,000
- rynTAU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9dude.. people layoff @JacNet..
That's my 2 cents, I mean, 2.4 Yen... ;) - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just donated yen200.
- Quakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Knowledge is hardly unworthy of donations. Wouldn't it be more worthy for you to sell the computer you were typing that on, then donate the money to the "black babies with bloated stomachs full of bile"?
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I hate this pointless argument.
If you donate to something, some people always bring up how you could have donated to some other cause that they deem more worthy. And its usually poverty. Or AIDS in Africa.
In my opinion, people can and should donate to whatever cause *they* personally feel is worthy enough of their money. I personally like Wikipedia and think they're doing good work so I'll donate to them today. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Done. It's still the cheapest source of information while being reliable if you know how to use it and treat sources, anyway.
- cell00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I got an image of Butters in my head when I read that.
- bash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ummm....the reason why they want donations is for EVERYONE, even people in third world countries who can't afford much, to have access to this wealth of knowledge that they've built up.
So perhaps they are not saving lives, but they are helping people in the third world. - Kickstart70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I won't donate or suport them until they fix the administrator recall system and stop the administrator fiefdoms that they've allowed to spring up. After seeing an admin disable someone just because they were in a pissy mood (admitted by the admin, who gave no apology), I was so turned off by the whole thing I tried to get an answer directly from Jimmy Wales. After three attempts and being ignored, I've given up on all the Wiki* projects.
- Laurentvw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This text is encouraging (definition):
For "matching donations", a company or other large donor pledges to "match" every small individual donation made up to a certain amount or period of time. For example, if you donate 50 dollars in a drive with matching funds, the sponsor will also donate 50 dollars, making the total effect a donation of 100 dollars. This encourages people to give more money knowing that their smaller donation will have twice the effect.
So don't hesitate, donate now! :P - unsolicited, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wish I could donate...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not today, it was yesterday.
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This sentence REALLY made me think for a second. What the hell have you done to my mind?! AUGH!
- FrankHowley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've donated 3$ :D
- Mininday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Should point out that this is tax deductible as well..just remember that.
I donated $20.00 last week. - FyberOptic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol I'm surprised to see no "faggery daggery doo!" comments yet in reference to Wikipedia.
In any case, Wikipedia is a fine resource. I use it almost daily. It's the next best thing to a good set of encyclopedias, since despite the occasional shinanigans of people editing things falsely, you're bound to get way more info on a particular subject than you thought possible.
Though with Google hosting them these days, I'm curious what exactly they need said donations for? - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+716yo represent brutha
Apparently my Paypal account still had some cash leftover! Donated $10. - DubbedOver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+310 from me too, rock on!
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Imagining someone saying that out loud with emphasis on all the pauses and exclamations just brought a smile to my face.

United States - subject117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately Virgin Unite was matching YESTERDAY. The page this links to is thaking them for yesterday. It's still a good cause, though.
- dzelika, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@shoopdawhoop
Wow. You definitely need Wikipedia! If you read more, you would know why knowledge is power and why education is priceless. The more people know the more they are able to come up with solution to problems such as world hunger, poverty, illness... The best way to keep the totalitarian regimes going is to keep the population uneducated. Think about it. Investing in education is investing in future. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they aren't matching it the entire fund raiser they said that they would have multiple groups matching donations. i guess the $200k is a different person that was matching donations.
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17I donated 3yen, glad i'm helping.
- Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thanks for the info, I am going ahead for the donation.
- nekteo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is there anothere way to donate money to wikimedia?
since the taiwan quake I (or otheres from the same region as I am) has been unable to browse wikipedia anymore... - Bulbear287, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Every penny going to Wikipedia is worth it. *Diggs this*
- zzap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I donated. What a good cause.
