- KingLeo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35I'd switch in a heartbeat. I'm so sick of comcast screwing people over where they're the only broadband providers.
- landohlakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Comcast is the worst. It seems like every 6 months I get a letter from them telling me that my bill increased but their inet service is still a great "value". It's only a value because there is no other choice.
- AaronTyler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I currently have BPL thorugh Current Communications here in Ohio and besides random disconnection issues I love it. For $30 a month I'm supposed to get a 3Mb/3Mb connection; in reality I'm getting 3.5Mb down and easily 5Mb up...No joke
- chris4404, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Exactly, anything challenging Comcast's monopoly I support.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11But the problem is when will FiOS arrive?
- Kriz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9DirectTV (and Dish Network) is the only real competition that the cable companies have, and the only time that the cable companies are willing to give you any kind of deal is if you drop DirecTV's name on them; then they'll bend over backwards to try and keep you.
Hell, Time Warner Cable has a major office complex right here in Connecticut, and they can't lay any consumer lines because Cablevision/Optimum and AT&T has blocked their moves to do so. Duopolies are the worst; you get all the problems of a monopoly, with an illusion of competition.
I can't wait until this is available in my area. - thedragon4453, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Agreed. But I am going to hold out for Verizon's FiOS. Faster, and cheaper. I don't think that I could cope with a DL speeds of 3 mb/s.
- FeartheKnighted, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7A little back ground info on BPL:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband_over_power_line - skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7If reasonably priced, I'll be on the phone dumping Comcast ASAP.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Don't believe the negative hype about dsl. It's still superior to cable and you can actually find an isp that respects your privacy and doesn't cave to any and every threat.
- AxeSwinger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just not true. I've had directv for about six years, both in northern California and northern Colorado and the service has only been interrupted twice due to weather. This was even less than an issue because with the DVR (Tivo) equipment we could still watch prerecorded crap. For both times the signal was down for about 10 minutes which is not unreasonable.
I really like Directv but I'm not sure what I'm going to do when my Tivo branded recorders go out. I can't imagine life without Tivo after having it for so long. - walkingdogs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Amen. I hate comcast as much as the next guy but you show me where in most places you can get 8 down, 1 up and extended basic cable for $65.00. I could never go backwards in bandwidth.
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5AT&T's $20 for 1.5mbps is quite good for me, but competition is always good
- bocaJWho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Verizon IMHO is worse than Comcast. There is a simple reason for this. According to their own FAQ "The consumer offers do not permit customers to host any type of server, personal or commercial." This is so vaguely worded so as to include game servers, small FTP servers and almost anything else that might put those 5Mb+ upload speeds to good use. The excitement of fiber I have is around being able to finally host personal servers from my home and have any kind of decent speed - verizon kills this hope.
They also don't know the difference between dollars and cents, or that Asia is a continent, not a country. - hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And now the government will be able to tell what appliances you have plugged into your outlets.
- AaronTyler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Duke energy is doing this in Cinicnnati and I have it! Goto Current.net check to see if its avaliable for your part of town; as far as I know it's limited to the east side.
- Shambla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Comcast has this in the terms of use as well so it shouldn't really matter...
"...run programs, equipment, or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises LAN (Local Area Network), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited services and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers" - rlanning, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm really hoping to see big improvements in BPL over the next couple of years. I live in a rual area with no cable or DSL options so this kind of technology is welcome news.
- bales, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That is because Cinergy (now Duke Energy) was pioneering this technology. I first heard of this about a few years back.
"CURRENT’s partnership with Duke Energy, formerly known as Cinergy, in Cincinnati, Ohio, represents the nation’s largest commercial BPL service deployment to-date, covering approximately 50,000 homes with plans for expansion."
From Current Group's website http://www.currentgroup.com/about/index.html - Wonotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ouch. i pay AT&T $20/mo for 5mbps down and 768kbps up.
the only other option here is charter cable which im sure is right down there with comcast. total garbage. - Lixie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I live in Cincinnati, I've never heard of this service. I'm a bit surprised though. Don't cities like San Fransisco and LA usually get newer stuff like this first?
- Kavok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Bah, I just checked my house and three other houses for friends and none of them can get this 'service'. :(
I would do almost anything to get rid of Time Warner Road Runner. - in2deep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is this for real? Interesting?
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't hold your breath. BPL is not cost effective to run to the rural areas of the country.. that's just been the party line to influence congress and the FCC to allow it. In reality, BPL requires "repeaters" because it's range is quite short, and the cost of getting to rural areas will pretty much mean they won't bother. It's cheaper to run cable, and since they haven't done that, I doubt they would go with the more expensive solution.
- MarcSage, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I have Cablevision and would drop them today
I would need at least 2mbs tho - euched, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cincinnati has actually traditionally been somewhat on the leading edge of the Broadband front. They were one of the first to have a full city roll-out of ADSL in the US and also one of the first in the nation to have BPL available.
- Gyp2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is good news. Competition is great. I have AT&T, I have the opposite problem from the comcast people. They keep getting cheaper and faster. I love them.
- Ribald_Jester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Awesome - an Internet provider that understands how the Internet works. Connections are supposed to be SYMMETRICAL. I am so sick and tired of these so called ISP's, giving us 1000000000 mb down and 128 k up (exaggerated for effect). I'd be *much* happier with 5/5 up/down, and the ability to run whatever I want. It's that simple.
- demonicume, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i had direct TV and loved it for 2 years. my issue was with the weather outages. i lost signal during storms. to switch, i would need like 5mb down at a lower price. Time Warner has me by the balls, but i love the idea of BPL.
- spazzcat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In less then a month they will have lots of HD!
- danielman94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've only had DirectTV for about one and a half years, and the only time it has stopped working was when it was really really stormy, like maybe 1-2 times a year, which isn't very bad at all. Also, the picture is a lot clearer than when we had cable(analog). The only thing I don't like about it is that the DirecTV-brand DVRs are crazy slow, and it takes way more time than it should to delete shows. I wish I had a Tivo-brand DVR...
- rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1notice 10 people submit same story this same site comes out on top everyday, i see spam.
- japple999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1DOWN WITH COMCAST!!!!
- lidflipper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I too live in Cincinnati and will sign up for it the instant it's available. It's available about two miles from me. SO CLOSE! Hopefully this will get it moving.
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Only seven are independent channels, the others are just movie channels.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Verizon FIOS TV, FTW
- TheGuruStud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oh charter is. When it works, it works well, but good luck getting it to work properly all of the time, and forget customer service. You can't even sign up and try to activate your modem over the phone b/c they want you to pay 50 bucks for a guy to come out and do the same thing. Not to mention the prices are rape worthy since dsl can't touch 5-10 mb in most areas.
- nickstr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree too as both an amateur radio operator and shortwave listener I am concerned by BPL sending RF down a line only shielded for electricity is asking for trouble as the lines can become an antenna radiating the signal over long distances away from the power lines. The only way I can see this working is by replacing existing power lines with ones that are shielded just like coaxial cable for both RF and electricity in areas where BPL is being used.
- mlock2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Comcasts bandwidth is really something to be desired. 8down doesn't really mean that its more like bursting once in a while close to 8 . We need compition.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah. that clause is standard for just about every ISP's terms of use.
- aximan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree with Kitsune818, whoever came up with the idea of transmitting a RF signal over an unshielded cable (power line) should have his hands slapped.
- str3ama, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1DirectTV is no better then any other cable company.
- wobudong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1DirectTV is a Rupert Murdock company. What makes anyone think that more Murdock is better than less Murdock? (Fox news viewers excused from answering.)
- Peril, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You mean I can get another option besides the craptacular HughesNet??
Make it so! - mrx23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Why dig him down? He's mostly right about BPL. I am HAM radio operator and I have seen just how much shortwave noise BPL produces. BPL's signal is very broadband and it makes a good portion of shortwave band unusable. BPL's data bandwith is not that great also. In rural area's, regular Wifi with high gain antennas and signal amplifiers works really well. BPL is inferior technology that cannot stand up against future data bandwith demands.
- ExecRecruiter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Good... I hate Time Warner.
- crushtheenemy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0FINALLY
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Up to 150 HD Channels! They only have 30 now though. Screw directTV they are one of the worst companies ever. What a scam! They are on the same level as the cell phone companies in my book.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1so *THATS* who wants BPL! It's so clear now! In case you are unaware, BPL has the potential to completely obliterate the HF radio spectrum in areas where it's deployed. HF Radio is the frequencies that provide world wide coverage.. think Shortwave (Although Ham radio is in there too, which are probably BPLs most vocal opponents). So who better to push a technology that blocks long distance free reception? A Satellite company!!
BPL needs to die a quick death. It causes more problems then it solves and doen't make much sense (for instance, it's not a cost effective solution to deliver broadband to rural folk, the repeaters needed cost more than running cable or fiber.) -
