- CTK14A, on 03/14/2008, -8/+149I wonder if they'll be as happy discovering porn as I was at 14.
- thedogisdead, on 03/14/2008, -5/+145Surely Linux is the only choice of OS here then?
Cubuntu anyone? - dagnome1984, on 03/14/2008, -10/+99Welcome to the 20th century Cuba.
- deviouskoopa, on 03/14/2008, -9/+96It's about time... computers illegal? That's just insane!
- displaced1, on 03/14/2008, -23/+96Picture of Fidel using a computer
C:Documents and SettingsHP_AdministratorMy DocumentsMy PicturesIMG233.jpg - mlostracco, on 03/14/2008, -12/+78The U.S. has such a hate-on for Cuba as this alleged Communist backwater, but have no problem having Communist China produce all of their cheap Wal-Mart dollar store crap despite its atrocious and significantly more grave human rights violations.
- elpohl, on 03/14/2008, -3/+68Until they discover 2 girls 1 cup...
- deviouskoopa, on 03/14/2008, -5/+59Umm I have to ask...
Are you Cuban or retarded? - partysan, on 03/14/2008, -1/+48I hope this doesn't get burried too deep. It's the funniest comment I've seen here in a long time.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -11/+55Buried for ridiculous title.
Computers and DVDs were never banned, their sale was just regulated. It's not anymore. They had to ask for permission to buy one (like a licence), now they don't. - Ouze, on 03/14/2008, -7/+42Reading this really hammers home the point that our continued sanctions are a sad relic of a time long past which should have been dropped a decade ago.
- aaabatteries, on 03/14/2008, -2/+37"...although air conditioners will not be available until next year and toasters until 2010 due to limited power supplies."
that can't be too fun in the Caribbean. - Arkz, on 03/14/2008, -2/+31AHAHAHAHAHA! i haven't seen someone do that in years...
- mlostracco, on 03/14/2008, -0/+28Cuba can only provide a limited amount of electricity in their coal plants. If you drive around at night, you'd notice how all homes have fluorescent fixtures (which the government provides/rations) and the government recently began replacing every citizen's aging, broke-ass fridge with new, energy efficient models, which subsequently caused the nation's energy usage to plummet.
We're spoiled in that our power companies can build using new technology and buy/sell excess power between themselves when levels get low. Cuba, like many other countries, doesn't have those luxuries. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -1/+25Not illegal. Neither were DVDs. They were just very restricted due to limited energy.
When I went to Cuba I learned quite a bit. It's not as bad as many think. It's just somewhat "trapped" in the 50s.
I really hope Raul makes the changes needed so we can engage in free trade and tourism with Cuba. It is a beautiful country and the people were very friendly, outgoing and in great desire of "news" from outside of Cuba. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -2/+26Cuban girls are hot. I'm more eager for the cubans to upload all their cubanas to the interwebz.
- ramiro, on 03/14/2008, -0/+23That is pretty funny. Don't bury it people!!!
- justjoehere, on 03/14/2008, -32/+53I wonder when they'll lift the ban on basic human rights.
- mlostracco, on 03/14/2008, -3/+24Computers haven't been illegal in Cuba, people. Jeesh.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -1/+21They will appreciate the Communist party more once they see the agenda of lemon party.
- dagnome1984, on 03/14/2008, -4/+23Well duh. The but of the joke is that this technology originated in the 20th century.
- pintomp3, on 03/14/2008, -9/+28we've got a shining example of basic human rights setup on the other side of the island.
- joelito, on 03/14/2008, -1/+18To be fair, MAKING money is illegal in almost every country. Earning money on the other hand...
- VictoryGin, on 03/14/2008, -1/+18UR DOIN IT WRONG
- MacEnvy, on 03/14/2008, -5/+22So is China, but computers aren't illegal there (though web access is restricted). It's not the communism you have to worry about, it's the authoritarianism.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -9/+25The internet is available to all citizens for free in Cuba. They just have to go to a library or a university.
And their main problem with building the infrastructure is: YOUR EMBARGO (again). America won't allow them to build a fiber optic infrastructure because it requires an oceanic connection. So they have to rely solely on satellite links. - b5c9, on 03/14/2008, -1/+17Cuban Porn coming soon.
- akatherder, on 03/14/2008, -1/+16That's a really unfair question. Maybe it's both.
- Hillsfar, on 03/14/2008, -1/+15When heart surgeons make less money in a month than you spend on a nice dinner for two at your local Denny's, you know for sure that personal home computers won't be used by the majority of people anytime soon.
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -9/+23Sanction you twit. Blame the US sanctions. Cuba is no worse then China or Saudi Arabia. Countries with which you have no problem dealing with. Healthcare alone would be cubas biggest export if those stupid sanctions are removed.
- Dragular, on 03/14/2008, -2/+16Whoa whoa whoa scrappy, nobody said anything about allowing internet access, just allowing private ownership of computers.
- powatom, on 03/14/2008, -8/+22What the hell are you talking about? What does socialism have to do with a lack of electricity? The reason Cuba has no electricity is because enemy countries won't sell them the fuel they need to generate it. Venezuela supplies most of Cuba's fuel, and even that is minimal.
- NeoMatrixJR, on 03/14/2008, -1/+14Let's greet them to the modern era properly. Have every PC sent to cuba launch a rickroll at startup.
- SomeHobo, on 03/14/2008, -7/+20Does it bother anyone else that Cuba and China are referred to as "Communist Cuba" and "Communist China"... we don't say "Social Democratic Denmark"
- inactive, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13But they are too busy using those computers for gold farming in WOW rather then for doing something useful.
- jonathaneb, on 03/14/2008, -4/+16Computers were invented in the 20th century.
- mlostracco, on 03/14/2008, -4/+16The travel sanction is stupid. Cuba is one of the most popular travel destinations for Canadians, and at least we get to see what's going on somewhat with our own eyes and actually talk to Cubans about their situation (if we venture out of the resorts). It really helps to actually be there and see what it's likeāit's not as cut-and-dried as most people think. Plus, it's fascinating to see the ubiquitous anti-Bush billboards everywhere that the government has erected.
- Xondar, on 03/14/2008, -5/+17Or Fascist America.
Actually, I think I'll start calling it that. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -1/+12I wish I were living in a Communist country just so I would have never seen Lemon Party or 2 Girls 1 Cup.
- screwfanboys1, on 03/14/2008, -0/+11thats what she sai...
***** - YodaJones, on 03/14/2008, -3/+13What's this? Widely available electricity? Now that's just going a bit too far.
- captainbluebear, on 03/14/2008, -6/+16Because their sanctions have absolutely no effect on Cuba's position, right?
Ohnowait. - CressCrowbits, on 03/14/2008, -4/+14A paradise for tourists and the rich in Havana, maybe. Not for the regular people of Cuba.
Remember Castro took over with a popular revolution. The poor of Cuba (i.e. about 90% of the population) were living under an even more tyrranical regime with Batista before the revolution.
Havana was known as 'the playground of america' remember? It was certainly no playground for Cubans. - bxblox, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9Thats freakin hilarious. Im going to digg it up so it remains visible.
- Speed, on 03/14/2008, -3/+12Cuba isn't Anti-American. America is Anti-Cuban. Cubans have no problems with Americans other than the fact that the US government has been trying to cripple the nation for over 50 years, and that they tried to overthrow the Cuban government.
- garryw, on 03/14/2008, -1/+10Dear Castro,
May I please buy a DVD?
Yours truly,
Cuban Citizen #457874 - FDDIcent, on 03/14/2008, -1/+10Not illegal they still have internet cafes, it's just a process for an individual to get one.
- DeCePTioN34, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8there aren't any rich there
comunism - solid12345, on 03/14/2008, -6/+14American Corporations will "rape" the place?
When American companies and tourists were all over Havana in the 1950s the place was a paradise. All these classic cars that they drive were brand new top of the line models that many Americans couldn't afford. Cuba was thriving economically before Batista. - inactive, on 03/14/2008, -4/+12Yeah. Screw the baby boomers. We're all stuck fixing their mess.
