- kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -6/+169I finished watching the episode. Overall I found it entertaining. Ignoring the silliness of the fact that they burnt and undercooked the chicken at the same time, I think it is a sign of things to come: a podcast that doesn't gratuitously make reference to the fact that it is a podcast! This show could be at home on the television, which is a good thing.
Most podcasts are targeted at a very small niche demographic and don't really do much to try and bring in people who don't fit in that demo. ctrl+alt+chicken is hopefully part of what the future of podcasting will be... entertainment for the masses, rather than a niche audience.
Don't get me wrong, I hope the nerdy shows and the targeted podcasts all stick around, because that is where traditional TV is lacking. Traditional TV is almost always trying to pull in a mass audience, so you don't get shows like Diggnation, or the_broken, or Critical Hit, or NerdTV on cable. I think this is partly why TechTV made the transition to Spike Jr, because the television economic model demands higher and higher ratings, which you can't get by appealing to just a small community. Or at least it's harder to do.
I think Revision 3 gets this, and I think they are trying to diversify their lineup and show that iptv is really the next step in entertainment. Not just for nerds, but even for people who like cooking shows. Think about it, if Outsourced and Mysteries of Science Revealed (or whatever it's called) and ctrl+alt+chicken join the rev3 lineup with Diggnation, Systm and the rest, you will have a place on the net to get a broad spectrum of programming for free, on your own time and suiting your tastes in entertainment. Throw in some sort of streaming, eventually, and you have true TV on demand to suit your needs.
Hopefully rev3 will keep putting new shows on all sorts of topics out there. But even if they don't, I don't think it can be stopped... this is the direction iptv will head.
I'm ready to ditch my TV. - Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -11/+59I have really been waiting for this and especially now that I am going off to college it would be nice to know how to cook a few things.
- ciaocibai, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53now that is a good insight! we need more commenters like you. i love the constructive ideas, rather than putting people down or flaming. keep up the good work!
- sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -12/+54"Well at least I have chicken"
-Leeroy Jenkins - javvidal, on 10/12/2007, -15/+49Yo kid, calm the *F* down, it doesn't matter who posted it first. At least this link is to the actual site, yours promotes your blog.
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -21/+52None of the other posts linked to Revision3, therefore put a link that will take you to Revision3.
All of the other posts were inaccurate/bad link; therefore, this is not a dupe. - phore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I bet the show was a thousand times cheaper to make than a television show. There were like 5 names in the credits and it looks like a professional quality television show.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28The show was good. Alex and Heather have a bit of chemistry. I learned something. It's a cooking show for newbies who don't know the rudiments, and it shows cooking can be fun instead of a chore.
The skit near the top was a little long-ish. Maybe the same factoids could have been presented more straight and more quickly but still in an entertaining way with the graphics but without the "mad scientist" shtick.
I like that they showed the things that can go wrong, like that the skillet was too hot.
The show acknowledges then defuses the sense that cooking is a hard, scary thing.
I may be trying the recipe this weekend. - bobmckenzie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33So . . . I guess that is Alex's girlfriend?
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -37/+60Digg this post because it acctually lonks to the frikin website. Good job kirko
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33It's news because it's the pilot of a new IPTV show
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Who says they are trying to appeal to the diggnation audience in the first place? They are widening their market, they are going to bring in more viewers with shows like this. Revision3 can't focus on ONLY the diggnation audience, how are they going to grow doing that?
Oh yeah, I liked the show, and I watch Diggnation.
So, take that any way you want. - SideshowBob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I've got to say that I was surprised to find that this was a cooking show. My only background was Alex mentioning the show on Diggnation...other than that, no clue what the show would be about. A cooking segment was pretty low on my list of guesses. However...
I did find the show entertaining. I think Alex has a knack for improv and a show like this highlights his ability to think and develop comedy on his feet. I think Heather made a great foil for Alex, and the times where they (slightly) snipe at each other are pretty amusing. Sure the first episode wasn't as polished as it could have been, but that's part of its charm. With any luck, we'll see more CTRL+ALT+CHICKEN and it will get better as it goes along. I consider myself a halfway decent cook, and a lot of the cooking shows I've seen take themselves WAAAAY too seriously...it is refreshing to see one (aside from "Good Eats" of course) that a) does not take itself too seriously, and b) acknowledges the fact that sometimes things don't quite turn out as expected. I am more than willing to give Alex & Heather some leeway on their first outing, and I will certainly tune in for future episodes.
If I had to pick a major complaint, it would be that their website references are 1 for 3. The Adagio tea URL works...other than that, no good. If you're going to direct people to a website, having it *exist* would probably be an important first step. - kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20phore, that's just another reason why iptv is going to keep getting stronger. the production costs are generally going to be much lower, it's going to be more customizable to the viewer, and it's going to be easier to just pick the shows you want to watch, rather than watching whatever is on tv at x time just because there's nothing better on.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20This show could bring new meaning to Geeks + Food = Chaos.
- tekmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Okay. So the show wasn't exactly what was expected, I thought it would incorporate more technology (it is called CtrlAltChicken, after all). But maybe this is just Revision3 trying to expand their IPTV network into areas other than technology; if so, good luck! In summary, the show is pretty entertaining, just don't expect it to be about computers. :P
- audi100quattro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Things to NEVER say on a cooking show
1) This is just gross
2) This is just disgusting
resist the urge! otherwise, it was hilarious. I'm tempted to say good acting for some reason. - Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Heather is smoking hot. Somebody I'd watch anytime.
I loved the animations, intros and outros. I think those looked great.
There were a lot of edit jumps, a few are alright, but the less the better.
Overall the show is awesome, I cant wait to see more episodes! - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -18/+31Yeah, and it also says:
Link Directly to the Source: Save people time by linking directly to the original news story. - deerhake11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15i really don't understand what people want from this show. I mean, if you wan't professionals that already know what they're doing turn on the Food Network. This, imo, is a show about learning how to cook - not teaching how to cook. I think part of what makes it good, is that you are learning right along with them, since it's obvious they are not trained professionals themselves.
I also caught kind of a Good Eats vibe from it, but is that a bad thing? That is one of a very few cooking shows that has mass appeal. There are many people (myself included) who only ever turn on Food Network when that show is on. I think it wouldn't be that bad of an idea for them to add even more Good Eats-eque elements.
I do agree, however, that it seemed to be a little lacking in technology. I'm not completely sure how they could integrate it more closely, except buying all the fancy new kitchen gadgets and maybe explaining how they work (which would be a bit pricey).
Even though I think my cooking skills might already be a little above this, I'll continue to watch. Even if I don't learn anything it's still funny and entertaining.
Overall I say keep up the good work and I can't wait till the next episode. - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Well gee that has a neat intro bit, when's Diggnation going to have something!
oh and that epi rocked, good job thar Alex. Can't wait for the next one - HenryTarling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I have been waiting for this to come out since Kevin mentioned it in diggnation, great idea, and great first show.
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Maybe if they asked nicely Alton Brown could drop by and give them some tips. Yes, I am a computer and food geek.
- plefno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I liked the show, but mainly just because of the hosts. That's quite possibly the worst cooking ever though. Hilarious though.
- cypresso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Good God almighty, please let these people in the kitchen again...this is hilarious!!!
- carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13They need chemistry. Geebus. It seemed like Alex was just about to smack her one from time to time.
I want to see the episode where Kevin does a cameo and they cook drunk and end up burning down the studio. That'd be good for a laugh and a half. - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11show was great, nice chemistry and alex is always funny plus the girl is cute too. I would suggest they focus on food for geeks and young men that want to make cheap and fast food. Making fancy dinners isnt a regular occurance for the digg userbase or for their entire audience.
- Allanon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Why do people try to bury posts of people stating their opinion? I understand burying someone that is being a jackass but burying someone just because they didn't like the show is wrong. If you don't agree then just ignore the post and move on because people have the right to their opinion. Just because the masses don't agree with someone's opinion doesn't mean that opinion is less valid than somebody else's opinion.
- zerovertex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Funny thing is that my wife doesn't touch raw meat either so I do most of the cooking around here.
If I did laundry, all my socks would be pink. - Poon007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9AWESOME SHOW....I think this has tons of fun times ahead of it. Alex is so damn funny. Great job and hope to see more.
- redbeard25, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Not bad - three stars out of five.
- Try the flat side of the mallet next time.
- Don't move the pan full of hot fat off the stove... bring the non-scald-inducing safe plate to it! - BESsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9To make your life miserable, because you obviously cant just have fun sometimes. I guess you have never watched Alton Brown, of Food Network, his show follows the same "anybody can cook" feeling, and he is one of the most succesful hosts Food Network has ever seen.
Also, don't bitch about "his girlfriend", who I am sure loves being called that, she is not on there to be a amazing cook, she is on the show for personality. Something that you apparently just don't understand. - T00LB0X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So they cant cook, but i cant really cook either..perfect! I loved it! and the mad scientist wasnt THAT bad guys...the Kentucky and Tennesse part was hilarious.
I like the idea where the assistant knows more than the mad scientist.
i definitely will support the show, (gonna buy a Tshirt) like someone said earlier it's good that podcasts are starting to break away from the technology/nerd niche. I just hope it's not too much too soon...they got balls for going out on a limb though, much respect!
EDIT: http://www.jinx.com/ControlAltChicken seems the link they gave in the show isnt ready? anyone else? - tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18I liked it... somewhat
My god Alex and the Girl were such babies... "It's so disgusting!" when handling the chicken breast. My god, talk about pampered spoiled people. It's a breast of chicken, it will not hurt you, and it's not disgusting.
I've been cooking my entire life, I worked as a cook, and I can tell you if they think a breast of chicken is disgusting, then I don't know how they are going to make anything else.
To me, it was a show with two spoiled L.A. would be actors/actresses trying to cook. I wan't them to make food, and know how to make it, and use the internet for recipes.
When I heard Alex was doing a cooking show, I figured it was because he knew how to cook! - treed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Neat show. Heather kept making the weirdest faces, though, which kinda bugged me. I do think there's some value in a show with cooks who can't cook. They can show you what not to do, which is always a problem if you don't know how to cook.
- jreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8that is a little harsh. I respect that you have an opinion, but jeeze, if you don't like the show or Alex, fine. Leave it alone, no need to put him down. btw alex, great job - keep it up !
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I also got a Good Eats vibe.
I got the feeling that this really was their first time cooking the meal. Although, that may have been the point? Maybe in future episodes they could actually practice before hand, and save the mistakes for then and not the show. I liked watching a cooking show with the people cooking are pretty much me, a novice. I love to cook, but I'm no chef. - ArchibaldTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16I was disappointed with the show, its a cooking show that makes a mockery of cooking, but in a bad way. Also the begining segment felt too much like good eats.
Overall I think it has potential, if the cooking segments are taken seriously from a cooking prospective, and didn't seem so thrown together in the future it could be really cool.
The things I did like were the graphics, although they could've had ingredient graphics, and the overall production value seemed good. The banter was cool too, it seemed more like real people cooking. Also it couldn't hurt to get another camera for close-ups of the food cooking, and following directions is key! - kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Well, I wouldn't say you necessarily learn how to cook at the same time :) More like, you learn about one of the many possible ways you can mess up the recipe haha. But yes, the show is still entertaining.
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Im a profesional brewer and we are geeks that can cook ...
- zerovertex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I argee with suMMx. Great chemistry. They might actually want to make a dish before they try to do it on tape but I guess that makes it funnier.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The show is aimed at people who never cooked.
You're lucky that you had a chance to learn to cook while growing up. A large and growing percentage of families don't do that. Generally the reason is both parents work so they cook little at home. You may not have noticed, but new cookbooks are getting more "beginner oriented" because people were never taught the most simple of the basics.
For the total beginner, a hunk of raw meat can be a slimy, strange-colored, gross-feeling and scary thing.
Just imagine of they had to actually kill the chicken... - briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I love the fact that they're first episode was a failure (recipe wise) and they still ran with it....
Although it isn't as geek or cooking newb oriented as it could/should be... Still pretty decent though. - MechaKevinRose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8awsome show, someone really needs to send them a timer in the shape of a chicken!
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Plastic-Chicken-Timer_W0QQitemZ7228274059QQcategoryZ13644QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
poor alex... official taste taster :P - amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It was a bit like daytime tv, but I like it.
The whole "why have people who can't cook do a cooking show?" well perhaps because they don't make it look easy, you actually learn from their mistakes. - jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15I'm having great download speeds. This is nice :)
- sniper6121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Great episode haha but the controlaltchicken.com and jinx.com/controlaltchicken sites arent working when will those be available?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I really don't care about cooking. But, this show is still good. I think it appeals to people to people who like cooking and people who are not really into it.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Is this like Diggnation in that the point of watching is not really for the recipe?
( If anyone really wanted the news from diggnation they would just go to http://digg.com/users/diggnation ) - badnewsblair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh Goodness I love Good Eats! Alton rules.
Ctrl+Alt+Chicken is great. Keep up the good work! -
