I've never ever found my intended result before the 5th results page. I have more luck finding Digg pages by querying the entire web on Google.

Most of the big diggers spend their time submitting everything from engadget anyway. We can still digg the story if we like it and we won't miss anything this way. The same story usually get submitted via a dozen different blogs so it won't change much.

The stories at that reach the top are often the least significant and more mainstream than normal media outlets. Digg effectively proves the mainstream media's popularity model.

Articles about stuff like "the density of moon rocks" or "how to knit" or "zip codes for maine" will never get dugg, and those are the kinds of oddball questions that search engines have to deal with.

Digg and a search engine are 2 completely different sites. Besides, yahoo tried the user submitted ranking system and it fell behind. Automated spiders are the only way to go.
Then again, this is a very dumb question to ask. Like a comment said for the article, it's apples and oranges. Who the hell would digg a story like this? It reads RSS feeds, you rate articles according to your interest, then it learns to show you better articles. It keeps a General Interest Profile which ranks according to the membership as a whole. It's just starting and only has a few thousand articles, it needs to scan a ton more RSS feeds, but you can see the concept. - Tanbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The author is simply throwing a hypothesis. One that, I believe, is in the process of being tested by Netscape.
Peat, the author does acknowledge the problem with bots or crawlers, hence the idea of interestingness and how such a character can be determined by a crawler before the article is posted to digg.

- borud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg has the same problem as nearly every website: the search is slow. Actually, Digg is quite a pig to navigate to since the first page usually takes forever to finish loading and rendering, but the search is so slow you *really* have to *want* to search. So in the short term: no -- digg doesn't really have search capability yet (for all practical purposes).
As Digg amasses a great deal of content, this is going to be more and more of a handicap, IMHO, because search becomes more and more important.
Digg is in good company here though. There is not a single newspaper I read with any regularity of that has even a remotely adequate search system. Most of them seem to have completely random ranking. Some manage to index duplicates of their own content or to omit content. Glacial search speeds is the norm.
