- epyon8282, on 10/15/2008, -1/+38Since no one else has said it already I will: ***** all these greedy, money grubbing music and movie groups (PRS, MPAA, RIAA, MPLC, IFPI) and their terroristictic tactics to extort money from people!
- FlareHeart, on 10/15/2008, -1/+32Wow...that is just going above and beyond stupidity.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -2/+28I was a mean little kid; I would have kicked them in a nuts... eh, probably still would.
- buddamus, on 10/16/2008, -0/+23I used to work in a coffee shop and we had a radio in the back to help keep us sane. after we were ordered not to play it anymore my boss downloaded unsigned artists so they had nothing to bitch about.
- bj1989, on 10/15/2008, -1/+15This is really messed up.
- Nerfatron, on 10/15/2008, -1/+14The PRS are probably giving themselves a big pat on the back for this. What they should be doing is having a collective palm to forehead moment. They have just spawned a whole new generation of Pirates!
- Blacksoth, on 10/16/2008, -1/+13"Non-profit" organization my a$$. I suppose all those lawyers are robin hoods too since they don't actually benefit from regaining all those "lost sales"? Oh wait! :P
This nonsense has gone way past out of control long ago. What does it take before people realize common, everyday people are under attack for nothing but BS and the whole copyright argument is nothing but a red herring to use the law to bully people (usually illegally)?
IF YOU'RE CANADIAN -- DO WHAT YOU CAN TO COMPLAIN AND OPPOSE BILL C-61 OR THIS WILL HAPPEN IN CANADA!! - pigfister, on 10/16/2008, -0/+10Did you see how the RIAA, SOUNDEXCHANGE, BPI, IFPI, Ect: scammed internet radio, are you actually surprised?
RIAA Claims Ownership of All Artist Royalties For Internet Radio
http://slashdot.org/articles/07/04/29/0335224.shtm ...
"With the furor over the impending rate hike for Internet radio stations, wouldn't a good solution be for streaming internet stations to simply not play RIAA-affiliated labels' music and focus on independent artists? Sounds good, except that the RIAA's affiliate organization SoundExchange claims it has the right to collect royalties for any artist, no matter if they have signed with an RIAA label or not. 'SoundExchange (the RIAA) considers any digital performance of a song as falling under their compulsory license. If any artist records a song, SoundExchange has the right to collect royalties for its performance on Internet radio. Artists can offer to download their music for free, but they cannot offer their songs to Internet radio for free ... So how it works is that SoundExchange collects money through compulsory royalties from Webcasters and holds onto the money. If a label or artist wants their share of the money, they must become a member of SoundExchange and pay a fee to collect their royalties.'"

/***** the PRS - DestroyFascism, on 10/16/2008, -0/+9Hey lets sue kids who are learning to sing.....
Its like killing the tree roots to save the leaves... - danielsamuels, on 10/16/2008, -0/+9So if I go for a ride in someone else's car, are they allowed the radio on or a CD playing? Or do they need a license for that too?
- sk11, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8"Music has to be heard before people go out and buy it."
I get the sense that they're shooting themselves in the foot over this, in the long run there's going to be a backlash, especially if they're willing to bankrupt a charity for allowing kids to sing carols to people without paying royalties. - elitebmo, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8So let me get this right, you have to pay the record companies to listen to the radio that the RADIO station paid to play the music? WTF is going on over int he UK? Thats the most F'ed up thing i've heard via DIGG. Non-profit organization my ass.
In the case of the schools, you buy a dvd, its yours, you should have the right to watch it whenever and with whomever you choose. I understand there being some sort of licensing fee in general at a school, but seriously, a school is a non-profit institution. It's not like they are selling tickets to the show! These ***** are out of line. - Totz83, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8It's acts like this that makes the entire copyright protection argument look idiotic
- RyanJones, on 10/15/2008, -2/+9Just treat them as you would a spoiled child; ignore them and sooner or later they'll go away.
- boneit, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7This is great news. The more these ***** prevent people from listening/viewing programming publicly broadcast, the quicker their markets will die. After all, if no one is receiving the material, they won't know it exists, so won't buy it.
Once the advertisers see the number of licenses for each market, they'll see their audience is tiny and will take their advertising revenue elsewhere.
All we need now is a mass TV news coverage pointing out you cannot listen to or watch material you purchased or tune into without a license, at your office, factory, school et al, so the advertisers finally wake up and see what the media companies are doing to reduce the effectiveness of their ads. - BBarash, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7The PRS are greedy bastards.
- SolusVir, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5Unbelievable... This is an excellent example of how corporate greed will end free enterprise and enjoyment of life.
- MegaSilver, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4You are correct. We will have to see if they re-introduce the bill
- Blacksoth, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4These guys are in it for the money. As long as they think they can keep getting it they won't be going away.
- exspasticcomics, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4applauds.

They probably employ the same kind of nazi minded bureaucrats that work for Health & Safety. - Smegzor, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4I'd like to see them go after me for playing my music in public. All of it is Creative Commons licensed. I stopped buying commercial music years ago.
- LordPhoenyx, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Now I might be wrong but when Parliament was dissolved didn't Bill C-61die? I know they can re introduce it but it's dead.
- Meocross, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Freaking Idiots, have these fools learnt absolutely nothing!? this is pretty much taking candy from a baby.
DRM has entered real life people expect a rebellion of epic proportions. - nordberg, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3It's the guy in the shop that doesn't make sense...
He is listening to the RADIO. The radio station already pays them for the public performance. As long as he is playing the radio and not cds, then their argument really does not make sense. Basically since the advertisers are paying the radio station for his (and his customers') ears, he has already paid them! Can we say shakedown! - bradjenkins0, on 10/16/2008, -1/+4How could they charge someone for listening to the radio? I cannot grasp that concept. Whether you are listening to it yourself or broadcasting it to a group, the radio station paid the fees to do this. Why should the listener have to pay? That takes away from the whole concept of radio. This bothers me greatly since I am also a mechanic and without a radio, I would go insane really quickly. Now, kids singing carols? That is even worse...
- plumcider, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Letter to the PRS:
I would like to know which performers and artists you actively represent, so that I may boycott them due to your ridiculous rules allowing you to think that you can extort (read: steal) money from small businesses, schools, and individuals. I do not wish for my money to support such petty, unwise individuals as would use your services. It is unconscionable that you would fine a kindergarten for singing, for watching a DVD, or a solitary worker for listening to his own radio. Shame on you all.
You may send me the complete list either via email or snail mail.
Thank you. - hitkaiser, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3My teachers used to show us VHS tapes of ooooold movies like the lion, the witch and the wardrobe.. AND they were taped from tv!
- Khast, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the Pro-IP enabled US...it will happen here soon enough...thank you Bush for making the RIAA's and MPAA's wetdreams come true. They were orgasmic about getting the government to make laws that enforce copyright, and now, the next step is to actually enforce these new laws......
- yaryarhumphump, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2wake up America this will happen to you soon enough.
- smallchaz, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2I remember telling elderly people I didn't like "You're a bad bad maaan"
- RyanJones, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2As soon as their money runs out they won't really have a choice in the matter. In the end, what the majority wants, the majority gets... and lets face it there are more people against than for.
- danielsamuels, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2It won't work like that, they'll just put more ads out to make up for the loss in licenses and it'll just snowball.
- Meocross, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Over 9000 minutes =_=
- exspasticcomics, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2if you stop stealing music.. I will give you kids a candybar.
- Sillywombat, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Have you heard these artists singing lately?
I doubt they learnt to sing at all, just recorded their voice in a machine. - AsiaPokerHiro, on 10/16/2008, -1/+3………………….._,,-~’’’¯¯¯’’~-,,

- epyon8282, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2The PRS, MPLC and IFPI are all european groups and they all represent major industry labels although i did throw in the RIAA and MPAA for good measure too since they all suck....
- thedaylights, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Okay, yes, this is ***** up. But there's something fishy about this 61 year-old mentioned in the article:
"like the 61 year-old mechanic Paul Wilson, who has worked alone at his garage for 23 years since he was 15." - Natitude, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2How do these people keep getting away with this *****? This is getting ridiculous. I don't understand why movie and music companies expect people to have to pay for every single use of said media. It's like charging people every time they use toothpaste even after they bought the tube at the grocery store.
- Meocross, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2"Copyright Infringements" have finally reached Nazi like levels man, what the ***** happened to "freedom of speech"?! eh?! i cant believe this ***** is even permitted to happen.
- BOFH139, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1They are also sending out letter to crèches in Ireland but since they are not registered with the Irish patent board this is ilegal?!?!
- nafnosseb, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1So...
The Performing Rights Society (blah)will stop at nothing (blah) so that they can listen to music without fear of prosecution.
Read the headline again. This does not make sense. - paolo03, on 10/16/2008, -3/+4It probably won't last long, people will stop listening to the radio, radio stations would lose their market and lose advertising money to keep them running. People won't buy songs they haven't heard of. Everybody loses in the end. except pirates maybe..
- Cheesehead9805, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1i'm already awake..leave me alone
- schoepsMS, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1The major Performance Rights Societies are ASCAP, BMI, & SESAC who collect money for the above publishers.
- Sillywombat, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1The time is now to rise against them!
