- Sheaf, on 10/12/2007, -9/+252Please, please give the community some type of way to correct misspelled headlines!
- deanshultz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+219"Please, please give the community some type of way to correct misspelled headlines!"
-an education?
perhaps a dictionary? - AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+177I had a friend in college who insisted that there were two ways to spell congratulations, and that congradulations was perfectly acceptable. No matter what we said or did, we couldn't convince him otherwise. It was REALLY ***** annoying and every time the topic came up I wanted to punch him in the face.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -14/+124Halliburton demands a recount.
- spyda45, on 10/12/2007, -20/+96Umm... the RIAA isn't a company. It's a trade group.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54"The internet cares deeply about being able to download music illegally" - uncalled for in the headline. I don't think it's a matter of stealing but of fair use, reasonable price and ease of purchase.
- turrican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51@timdigg: "congratulations is so often misspelled that noone even notices"
...which is surely why the misspelling was the first thing mentioned in the post comments...? - prisoner24601, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38@The Consumerist
"The message is clear. The internet cares deeply about being able to download music illegally."
You couldn't possibly be more wrong. (At least in my case.) I absolutely couldn't care less about being able to pirate music, and it's insulting that you think the only people with a vitriolic anger at the RIAA/MPAA only have it because they are immature children pirating music and movies.
The RIAA has waged all-out war against Fair Use itself. Sure there are a lot of pirates who hate the RIAA, but (believe it or not) there are actually a LARGE number of us who are grown-up, thoughtful, responsible citizens who think the methods (if not the goals) of the RIAA are outright evil and undermine some of the critical fundamental freedoms of our society.
It's pathetic that there's probably a complete "siege mindset" at RIAA headquarters now and they simply cannot imagine that anyone is angry with them for any reason other than a teenager's myopic "I want something for nothing" view. For a VERY large number of us who DON'T shoplift, DO pay our taxes, DO obey the law, and actually can recognize the need for artist to be compensated for their work, the RIAA is still viewed as a monstrous blight on our society.
If these people had their way, there would be no such thing as a photocopier, VCR or mp3 player. (And DON'T mistake that for hyperbole, remember that the RIAA actually DID sue Diamond Multimedia when they released the first major mp3 player long before the iPod.) These people really ARE willing to "turn back the clock" on technology and deny you and me the ability to exercise our fair use rights.
That DESERVES contempt. They've earned their victory. - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43@gameforge. I love a good rant here and there... but there are two major problems with yours
1) nobody cares
2) it's too long for a subject nobody cares about - bairy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36"The internet cares deeply about being able to download music illegally."
No. The Internet cares deeply about aggressive bullies suing everyone they feel like, lying to the world and making out that somehow, we're killing artists, in order to make endless profit. - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44Another analogy would be: Halliburton should have received the award without any user bidding/voting being done.
- david468, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32"I noticed the miss spelling and it was to late."
Yeah..I hate it when I notice misspellings too late as well. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29The motion carries, a cave troll shall be sent to each members house for proper anal justice.
- wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Congrads everybody!
- gmtwilight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Here's an idea... use Digg's spell check.
Or if you have Firefox, use ITS spell check.
But ya, schools, education, dictionaries those are all excellent tools to use if you're a dumbass. - cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19the RIAA is a company?
i always thought it was an organization... who knew? - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Digg front page a week from today:
Supreme Court Decision Names Halliburton Worst Company in America - kidc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Also I think it has to do with them slapping everyone and their grandmother (quite literally) with meritless lawsuits to extort money from the general public.
EDIT: Opps, looks like bairy beat me too it... - memerot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"miss spelling"? Do you mean Tori Spelling maybe? Or maybe there's a beauty contest for girls who win spelling bees? ;)
- Attrition, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18In Canada, that is true.
South of here, you get sued for downloading. (They still send you letters up here too, mentioning what you were downloading when they 'got you'). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Technically they are not a company, they're and association. Theres a difference.
Having said that, they are an association of complete ***** companies. - dixonHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just be happy we didn't get you on the Mr. Grammar too!
- Yodacola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I agree with the poll. The RIAA is in clear ignorance of consumerism. Instead of trying to improve, they attack vigorously at people's rights with blatant disregard to any ethics whatsoever. They pervert music as free speech by making it a sleazy business practice.
They misspelling of congratulations subtly symbolizes this and I commend the digger for mistyping it. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The Final Big Board
http://consumerist.com/consumer/worst-company-in-america/worst-company-in-america-2007-the-final-big-board-245261.php
Just so everyone knows that there were other companies up for the contest. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Congrats!
(Please don't sue me.) - 1KrazyKorean, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16LOL wow you guys can be so mean, I noticed the miss spelling and it was to late. Yea I know Im a dumbass but come on can I get some slack :). But if not ok then I guess I deserve it since there is a check spelling button right next to the submit button.
- Kratisto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Agh... Such conflicting emotions. I want to digg this because of the article, but I want to bury it because you spelled Congratulations "Congradulations".
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I just like downloading music for free. Isn't that what this is really all about? Come on, lets be honest here."
I acquire all my music legally and I despise the RIAA. So, no it's not. - Elbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Halliburton is making profit with deaths, RIAA only with computer files.
Now who's worse? - redslash, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Oh good grief, he made a bloody misspelling, get over it. It's not like you or I haven't made as dumb of mistakes before. *_*
- NiGHTSNY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Read as: Most internet addicts (younger crowd) are aware of what the RIAA does, rather than who Halliburton even is.
Though you could argue that most kids don't visit The Consumerist, I think the simple fact that the RIAA is on a vote would sway it far enough. - Hayes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm doing a law project on the RIAA, so I have been following all this rather closely. Here is a list of some recent popular Digg stories regarding the RIAA.

- WikiEasy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You guys are falling for the Music Industry's straw man. The real devil isn't the RIAA. It's the funding members of RIAA. They'd much rather tarnish the reputation of the word "RIAA" than say "Sony" or "Universal" or "Disney".
I say we stop calling them RIAA and just start using the REAL NAMES behind this puppet. - jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I still say that Halliburton is much more evil than the RIAA.
- Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@SlvrEagle23
You can't just hate on capitalism without offering some sort of alternative. Communism? Authoritarianism? Anarchy?
The problem with the world today isn't that capitalism is a bad thing, it's that's people are selfish bastards. Capitalism simply acknowledges that fact and tries to use people's selfish bastard-ness to help the people around them. It's obviously not a perfect system, but it's the best option we have. Don't hate the game, hate the players. - zugzug, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yes, he spelt congratulations wrong. Move on.
- eeeeaaii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In my opinion both the RIAA and anti-DRM activists are completely missing the point. Nobody ever seems to say anything intelligent in this debate.
The concept of "owning" a computer file just doesn't make sense. A computer file is a piece of information, not a physical object like a car or milkshake. That is why it can be copied. You can't just "make a copy" of a car or milkshake. It's not even theoretically possible a la quantum physics.
If the world made sense, I could purchase the rights to reproduce a piece of music. Then I would be allowed to play it whenever I want, wherever I want, in whatever format I require. If I lost the computer file representing the information, I could just go to the entity that I bought the rights from and request another copy of the file. If I bought a new cellphone with a new codec for a better file format standard, I could go to whomever I bought the rights from and request the file in this new and different format. The person who sold me the rights would be required to provide the file because I have the right to reproduce that song. - tmach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Halliburton has a legit argument to be number one, too--it's an actual company!! Obviously the RIAA cheated.
Of course, Halliburton's been chased out of the country now... or is being chased, since it hasn't actually moved yet. - counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wOOt! nough said
- diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Although RIAA deserves the scorn of every human being on earth, it's far less worse than Haliburton. Even with this great news, I'm a bit saddened by the fact that citizens of the Internet care less about a parasitic company which is ruining an entire country and more about an evil music company.
Even with the malpractices of the RIAA, Haliburton deserves this award WAAAAAYYY more than RIAA. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ORLY? Why I am not surprised?
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3because the survey really makes a difference and will change the world . .....no-one can prefer to discuss anything other than Halliburton, ever.
- tchonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg for the golden ***** trophy.
- Rooster99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So, you have never made a typo in your life? Cut the guy some slack! Jeez, this is a social news site, not a freaking spelling bee!
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3consumerist and lame
- Fontzepontze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, I hate the RIAA but to not vote for Haliburton is ignorant. They're stealing from all tax payers not just attacking internet users and musicians.
- ericsemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty sad that RIAA is even compared to HB. America and her "necessities." Enough said. :/
- matthewchild24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Well, that's what happens when you try to stiff your artists, by cutting back royalties:
