OK, I'll bite. Won't it be great to get spammed by all the Zune owners trying to spread around songs solely for the kickback. Microsoft has successfully brought spam to the MP3 player. Welcome to the Social. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34>>>"i can earn video game Downloadable Content just by transferring tracks?"
From what I can tell, it looks like you can earn points for transferring protected tracks that the person subsequently purchases.
Basically, if you buy a song using the Zune Marketplace (currently the only way to buy music for the Zune online), then you can transfer it to another Zune via the Wifi. That person can listen to it up to 3 times within 48 hours (or something similar). He can then also purchase it, which basically just unlocks the DRM for that song for him more permanently. Then you get points or something, since you introduced him to that tune.
So, if you shill your corporate music to your friends, you too can earn valuable prizes! - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22It's not for "giving" songs to your friends, it's for *selling* songs to your friends. You only get the points if the friend actually buys the tune too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Thjere is no such thing as am "unofficial" confirmation.
The very definition of both those words makes them mutually exclusive. - readme, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21So now you'll be walking down the street and some dude will see your Zune and start chasing you.... "Let me send you this song! Only 50 people to go until I get a free download."
It's Zune + Spam -- Zpam! - s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18i can earn video game Downloadable Content just by transferring tracks? thats kinda neat... although I doubt you'll find many people with a Zune, but who knows...
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Well, you can only listen to it 3 times, and then you have to buy it if you want to listen to it again.
- timusca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15iPod has one of the biggest ecosystems on the market... don't be so short-sighted.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Well its pretty new, eventually some people will buy it, try it out and perhaps like it.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Is anyone else kind of annoyed by the counter-culture losers in all the commercials? They all look kind of greasy and smelly to me. Not exactly anyone i'd want to get social with. Besides, how could they afford a zune, none of them look like they have jobs?
- burningpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14This really makes me groan....Microsoft has made a huge blunder with the Zune.
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@No13Baby
Dude you had to bring up the DiVX player?!?! I received one as a Xmas gift and I took it back to CircuitCity. My girlfriend was pissed but I refused to buy into that whole BS.
Note: Disney wants to sell DVDs that erode a few days after opening the package. This is when I will start to torrent *****. - rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, these titles are misleading.... and just as lame as the ones that end in a question mark... "Apple confirms iPhone and new Macbook?"...
I'm Ron Burgundy? - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Maybe just ZAM, ZPAM isn't really easy to say.
"Dude, I got zammed like 18 times on the subway this morning" - nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is that a picture of J Allard dressed up as Moby from five years ago? Now I understand why there's a brown Zune, or "Zurd."
- nopstar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Great-
Can't wait to get the "Bill Gates will pay you" to forward this e-mail... all over again. - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you need money from adsense,
then there is such a term. - No13Baby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Well, you can only listen to it 3 times, and then you have to buy it if you want to listen to it again."
This smells a little like the original DIVX.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIVX - pdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Allard or Moby, it's hard to take anyone who wears a blazer over a hoodie seriously.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just like the competition. Nice to see OSX starting to make Windows worry. That means nice features in Vista to stay competitive, like NOT running as root and looking pretty. I hope the Zune starts cutting into the Ipod just enough so Apple starts really innovating new features on it. I'm not really interesting in replacing my Ipod with a new one if it's only a difference of 60Gb-80Gb and maybe slightly smaller.
I can hope can't i? - Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nice inaccurate weasel words
"Confirmed: Microsoft To Reward Zune Song Sharing"
"Now we've got pretty much confirmation —unofficial, that is—that Microsoft is planning this feature"
So we have unofficial confirmation that it is PLANNED - yellowmello, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14you cant download podcast with the zune software.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What is really interesting is that this is not a feature of Zune NOW. It's a promised, upcoming feature that is being proposed. So all Gizmodo confirmed is that Allard & co. are thinking about implementing this feature.
How does that affect your Zune purchase today? Well, if Microsoft follows Apple's lead then such a system, IF developed, will most likely require a new purchase. IMO, this is just hype to get people excited about Zune by painting a bright future while ignoring the rather drab state of affairs at the moment. - dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14For Fxxk Sake, pay for something you want to listen to more than 3 times isn't unreasonable at all.
- RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8The point is all the features are done half-assed.
"You get points to buy things if your friends buy the songs you share with them."
-This will result in MP3 player spam... great.
"The Zune comes in a color other than black and white."
- Uh, brown. Now thats innovative!
"The Zune has a bigger screen than the iPod."
- Bigger screen, same resolution. Here's your half-assedness.
"The Zune has an FM tuner."
- I'm with ya here. I like this feature. However, I've already gotten this on my iPod with Apple's FM tuner.
"The Zune has wifi."
- Again half-assed. Can you sync with the computer. Nope. Can you buy songs off the Internet directly from the Zune. Nope. Can you send non-DRM'ed content to other Zunes. Nope. Can you send video. Nope. You just know the next version of iPod is going to have this as well, and I guarantee they are listening. They don't rush half-assed products. They take their time and get it right. That's why their are so many Apple enthusiasts on here.
What else has Zune got going for it:
- ***** points scheme where 79 points = $.99. WTF?
- you must purchase $5 of points at a time
- $1 of every Zune sold goes towards the Universal cartel. Wait until the other companies want their cut. This will soon balloon to $10.
- No podcasts.
- No using device as a harddrive.
- Microsoft is tricking you into thinking their Marketplace has more content than it actually does by listing artists and albums that you can't buy.
- large and bulky
I'm sure there are more reasons not to buy a Zune. But this is good enough for me for right now. I'm waiting for version 2.0, or the next gen of the iPod. - yellowmello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I was checking out major nelson last podcast and he had a dude on that said the zune does not do any thing with the 360 yet! How in the hell do you have a kick ass game system and then don't make a mp3 player that does nothing with it.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12How about walled garden vs walled garden? How is the Zune marketplace any different than iTunes? In both cases you can only buy your songs from one place, or you can rip your own CDs.
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7TheOther1:
No it won't. If you can show that giving someone three free plays of an mp3 will lead to purchases, there's no way they'll remove it. In fact, I expect iTunes and iPods will change to allow sharing for 5 free plays. - zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I only take people seriously when they wear plaid parka vests over hoodies, or blazers over blue silk shirts. But not Navy blue - that's ridiculous.
Also, people with long hair are not credible .. unless, of course, they have one hoop earring and a sword. - potatoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sounds like some kind of new-age pyramid scheme...with the record companies at the top.
- honds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Now I am by no means an Apple fanboy. I do own an iPod but I use Linux with Windows XP at home. No Mac.
But if you argue that Zune fuels the Xbox 360 universe (or visa versa) then you can also say that iPod fuels the Mac universe. Let me copy and paste firemillen2 and edit it a little bit:
"Don't be surprise to see a deep discount on MAC OS COMPUTERS. By making it dirt cheap, as compared to the IBM COMPATABLE COMPUTERS, APPLE will get many kids to buy the COMPUTER. Then they keep improving the IPOD....generation after generation until you can download movies via wifi from your MAC OS harddrive to your IPOD....or you can port your games, or you can port your contacts. They'll add VOIP functionality, wifi web browsing , etc. etc.
The IPOD becomes a natural extension of a MAC OS ecosystem.
The ipod becomes Apple's new PDA with VOIP and MP3 capabilities." - ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@vandread "If your friend likes the song and buys it you get a kickback, sounds good. With the iPod you let your friend listen to a song, he buys it, puts it on his iPod to listen to it then you get nothing."
That's true but it also happens when you influence the purchase of a Swanson Chicken Dinner, a Car, Donuts, a Beer!
The issue here is that this incentive will disappear after a while (when Zune gains in popularity) and they reason will be BS. I'll bet that the $1 per Zune player to the record companies will never go away. The reason why is that the consumers never revolt. Many speak of it but it rarely ever happens. People just deal with it. Imagine going into a coffee house and being inundated with Song Upload Request. I wonder if the upload occurs before asking? If so, it will be easy to drain someone's battery. - alvinrod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"I personally don't think the features are half assed, but I would rather have half assed features than none of the features at all."
Good for you. I'll wait until someone gets the right, be it Apple, Creative, Microsoft, or someone else before I drop my money on an MP3 player.
"This will not lead to spam. You have to be within a certain distance to receive a song, you have to have wifi on, and you have to accept the song."
It still doesn't add a lot in my mind. Considering you get 3 plays or 2 days, I'm not really sold on this feature. Much to restrictive. The spam possibility does exist though, but I don't think many twelve year old's are going to be able to afford a Zune.
"You don't like brown? Fine. There is white and black, just like the iPod. But they offer a third color which some people may like. To make fun of something because it offers more options is ridiculous. It makes you look really stupid."
And there's also a lot of people who don't like brown as well and if they think it's a stupid color that's their opinion. Would you still defend the color scheme if it was something that 90% of the world could agree was terrible? At some point you just end up looking stupid, but for being a complete apologist.
"The same resolution argument is a joke. I have two tvs. One is 46" and the other is 32". They are the same resolution. Which one is better? The 46". Bigger is better. To pretend like it isn't is just stupid."
No it isn't. If you stretch that same resolution out to a 46" screen it's going to look like crap. Also the physical size of the Zune is larger than the iPod and it weighs more as well. Bigger is not always better. To pretend like it is is just stupid.
"Wow, you can get the same feature on the ipod for $50 more. LOL"
Now I'm pretty sure you're just a fanboy. I'm one of those people who really don't care about getting radio signals for an MP3 player. I bought the thing so that I could listen to my own music, not what some asshat radio stations want me to hear because the record labels pay them to play it. If I really did want to listen to the radio I could fine such a device that would enable me to for a lot less than an overpriced $50 add on from any company. Sometimes I think people just look for features that MP3 player X doesn't have and turn them into a big deal just so they can make some kind of a point.
"First of all, yes you can send any mp3 file to another zune. It doesn't need DRM nor does it add it. Secondly, can you do any of that with iPod? Nope. Can you share a song with another ipod via wifi? Nope. More desperation from a fanboy."
It essentially acts like it adds DRM because after 3 plays or 2 days the song's gone. And I really don't care about whether or not an iPod can do it. Once again you're just looking like an idiot fanboy.
"The only thing the iPod has on the Zune is that it is .3" smaller. Big deal. I have an iPod, but I also have an open mind and am not a sheep, unlike most people on digg."
I somehow doubt you have an iPod. You sound like such a complete shill that it's sick. Idiots like you and every other fanboy really turn my off to whatever product you're trying to promote. It might be a great product, but the fan club pisses me off. - mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft is awesome at planning stuff. Like WinFS in Vista!
oh wait - ArnoldTPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No they aren't.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do all these newfangled MP3 players just let you upload MP3s to them or do they only play DRMed content?
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12uh oh, flag564 has arrived, don't mod down his idiotic comments or you're a fanboy.
Somebody call the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance! - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Zune has changed the number of hours in the day! All hail our Zune overlords!
I know some of you moved from /. - you probably saw it coming. - bgramer1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Big blunder? This is the mother of all blunders. Ballmer refers to wifi sharing as "squirts" which makes me think of diarrhea. This site describes the Zune best : http://www.*****.com .... it's a PIECE OF ***** ....
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@readme
"Skank Indie Chicks" Fantastic way to put it. Don't get me wrong, I'd just double wrap it and go to town on any of them but it doesn't mean I want to buy a zune and hang out smoking cloves with them all day. - ArnoldTPants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"You can only listen to music that you have paid for. "
That is 100% false. The zune will play any MP3. But I'm guessing you're really not that stupid and just wanted to spread some rumors in the hopes that it will encourage people not to buy a zune. - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can only transfer wirelessly to another Zune device ONCE! wtf?
- Dearlittlepony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So what it seems like here is that the two big advantages of the Zune are:
1. Wifi sharing
2. rewards points of some sort
So if a future gen iPod could do this it would still eradicate the competition. Why doesn't anyone foresee that eventuality. I'm sticking with my ipod video. - foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, getting dugg down for stating unbiased facts seems to be all the rage. It's just a setting, people. No need to take offense.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15What most commentators (like the BusinessWeek bozo) fail to realize is that Softy is using xbox to boomerange the zune into popularity. Don't be surprise to see a deep discount on the xbox 360. By making it dirt cheap, as compared to the PS3, Softy will get many kids to buy the game console. Then they keep improving the Zune....generation after generation until you can download movies via wifi from your xbox harddrive to your Zune....or you can port your games, or you can port your contacts. They'll add VOIP functionality, wifi web browsing , etc. etc.
The zune becomes a natural extension of a hugely popular xbox ecosystem.
The ipod remains a harddrive with a easy user interface.
walled garden vs. network/game/web handheld.

- foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@DelMonte
Until MS and Apple both throw down their guns and adopt those standards, we're going to have this kind of crap eternally. iPod converts WMAs to AAC. Zune converts MP4 to WMV. Fortunately with the Zune, the transcoding's automatic and doesn't leave two copies of the file on your computer. It's not that big an irritant, but both devices could friggin' stand a little bit of OGG lovin'. - foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@DelMonte
"Weird, you say "everyday" but the Zune only has been out since yesterday?? Are you a Zune reviewer or a Microsoft employee? Oops?"
Neither. I happen to be on really good terms with my former employer, who was kind enough to let me get one a few days ahead of time. You jump to conclusions like a lemming with a jetpack.
"Saying "DRM-o-licious pack-in software." is a clever way to attack iTunes while giving the impression that you can criticize the Zune software so that people wouldn't think you're an MS paid shill..."
Heh. I wish I had some MS cash. So far, I find iTunes to be slightly easier to get along with, and I don't know where you got the impression I was attacking it, since it was the Zune I referred to as DRM-O-Licious. Both pieces of software are, really. I'm looking forward to some of the homebrew improvements that are inevitible for the Zune. I prefer to use amaroK with the iPod. It's a nice alternative. There are and will be others.
"Too bad you just revealed that you are..."
You seem to be an overprotective Apple fanboy. No need to get defensive unless you're feeling insecure. Maybe you should have a beer and settle down. - mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zbose: True that. Three feet of powder sounds heavenly right now, compared to all the damn rain we have right now.
I like to listen to music on speakers, or headphones so big that they make my head droop. Anything else is going to be a compromise no matter what; so it doesn't really matter what player it is. -
