- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No friends were found for SteelChicken
- tomee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I just want to say that the wikipedia is very trustworthy for this kind of thing. I can't think of why anyone would have any interest in misrepresenting the facts when it comes to what is and operating system and what isn't, so it's probably not happening. Take the wikipedia with at least one grain of salt when it comes to political stuff and pages about people and such, but for anything else, you're probably better off at the wikipedia than pretty much anywhere else on the internet.

older web page with lots of screen shots of old os - Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't mind the link to Wikipedia, but the description of "Nearly Every OS ever made" is very wrong.
I just checked what I started on which was TRS-80 OS History, and it has TRS-DOS mentioned, it lists it as a MS Basic with file extensions and ROM based-- it was neither. Further, for just the TRS-80 Model I, there were the following operating systems with only the first on the site: TRSDOS, LDOS, DoubleDOS, DosPlus, NewDos, MultiDOS, GDOS, MicroDOS. If other early computers had as many DOSs from both the primary and 3rd parties, then the list can not be possibly close to complete. - grungyhamster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This is the first one I've seen in the past maybe 3 weeks. I don't think that qualifies something as being "all about" something else.
- VnutZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow ... I had started going through operating systems to make a collection of their failures in "out of box" configurations and susceptibility to attack during installation. http://www.omninerd.com/2004/08/30/articles/11 I remember stopping two years ago because 1) it started getting too repetitive and 2) there were too many OSs to do by myself. But this list makes me glad I didn't keep going.
BTW - can anybody explain why Microsoft Windows (I'm not talking server here) responds to port 21 when you're installing it? - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Then add it to the list!
- hackershandbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hmm (tries to think of truly arcane operating systems) ... they managed to get FLEX and UCSD P-System ....and what about those weird LISP boxes that had OSs that ran in LISP (as I recall) and other exotica ... and PANOS isn't in there - it was an OS designed for the BBC Model B addon 32016 processor ...
gets my digg for being the only "nearly comprehensive" list of OSs I've seen ... - STDOUBT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ajck
In fact, ubuntu *is* an Operating System.
Linux is just its kernel...
It would be more accurate to say
any OS using Linux as its kernel is called GNU/Linux,
regardless of specific distro name. Maybe that would be *too* accurate for this crowd though. - NoahVail, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is actually quite a nice bit of work. I do seem to remember installing system 4.0 on Macintosh, and was pretty sure there was a system 3.2, and one could surmise that there was a system 1 & 2, as well. Does some old geek have any info on this?
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quite a few. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Commodores on the list. It doesn't seem to have Microsoft Basic from the Aquarius home computer, but it was a crummy computer anyhow, and Basic is covered elsewhere in the list even if it is not that specific version. I wonder which OS are missing.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Missed one. geNToo ;)
http://gentooexperimental.org/nt/ - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't like the OP implying that Wikipedia can't be trusted. It has more checks-and-balances and diverse editorial control than any other source of information on this goddam planet. Stop with the childish attempts to discredit Wikipedia.
- hackershandbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How can you have a "comprehensive list" of "nearly" every OS ever made - its either comprehensive or not ....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amiga : The Legend Never Dies
:) - Drakazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should thank GNU!!!
Without GNU there would be no 'Linux OSes'. Linux is just a kernel.
It's Ubuntu GNU/Linux. - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Nokia runs Symbian.
- ratsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They missed Interactive UNIX, later Sun Interactive UNIX
- warragul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CICS is not an OS. It is an application. You could run CICS under VM, MVS or DOS/VSE IIRC.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I remember XTGold! I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it! Was a really neat way to copy files and edit text. The interface was kind of like a primitive LCARS.
- NinjaJedi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmmm most of them are there. Couldn't find the OS for my first computer - Amstrad CPC-464! The OS for that was Locomotive BASIC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_CPC - btstewart, on 08/26/2009, -1/+2First of all, I was making a joke.
More to the point, though, how is Ubuntu a dumbed down version of Linux? It has all the parts there. What's missing?
The only thing I see missing is a lot of the pain involved in setting up and running Linux. Wouldn't it be nice if your mom could run Linux without problems?
Linux isn't something pure. It isn't a white virgin waiting in the towers which must be protected. Linux is a tool which is adaptable to (theoretically) everyone. You can have your Linux and I'll have mine. It's both coexisting which is the exciting part. - warragul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not even close to complete. The IBM list would go on for pages. Nearly every processor line had at least one OS; some had many. They list DPPX but miss the more-numerous DPCX. The OS with the most licences was supposed to be EDX for the Series1. That's not listed either. But they do list AIX.
Then there are the OSs IBM obscured as "microcode". All the variants of RCC, for instance.
A bold claim... - warragul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm... no sign of GNO/ME either. http://www.gno.org/gno/ (Unix-like OS for the Apple IIGS).
That should have rated at least a mention.
All in all not much of a list. - sakabako, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Imagine being from a Spanish speaking country in 1987. There was OS/2, Windows 2.0, System 2 and and an operating system called dos! (say it as the Spanish word for 2, not the normal DOS)
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Trustable" is a word. And I hope you wouldn't doubt the inherent truthiness of the preceding sentence.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also missing from the list is Secure Trusted Operating Program (STOP) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XTS-400 . I'm too lazy to wiki, so if you feel like adding that operating system to the list, knock yourself out.
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha! It isn't nearly that comprehensive for example it leaves out IBM big iron, and Data General mini's.
For example - I used to be responsible for a DG MV9600 running AOS/VS II. IBM big iron could be running DOS/VSE, CICS, etc.
Seems that the word 'comprehensive' is now synomous with shoddy. - becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3geNToo just gives me the shivers... Linux running a MS kernel.
< /crazylinuxevangelism > - CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MSX-DOS was missing. added it mylsefl
- egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I loved the BeOS. I have my copy, full box and all. I unfortunaly don't have any hardware availble for it. Pretty impressive list and I being the dork that I am have used more then a few of those.
HPUX FTW. Because it pays my bills. :) - TheWestExit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Still rocking the BeOS.
- jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And here's a list of technology-related lists on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Technology-related_lists
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1By fictional, I assume you mean Vista, or is Vista in the realm of "urban legend"
"I knew a guy who was friends with guy who was roommates with this guy who said Vista was definitely shipping by Holiday '06" - rassoodock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Blah, this is the kind of thing you'd expect to see on wikipedia, might as well just digg the whole site. And no, it's not comprehensive, i don't see pSOS RTOS and I'm sure it's missing a whole slew of proprietary OS's such as Nokia OS which is in every Nokia mobile phone.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not useful? Its got Jesux ;-)
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I added 3Com's Linkbuilder. Cisco's IOS kicks its ass, which is why nobody knows it.
- DubbedOver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They forgot WinPE.
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/programs/sa/benefits/winpe.mspx - abid786, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its so annoying to see users who joined 2 days ago saying how the site should be...
- sailor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yup...I must be old, I used to sell Commodore VIC20 and 64's shortly after leaving High School. They are the first computers that I had ever used.
Man I am glad those days are over..:p - killthemoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Where are all the gundam OS's. I think they count, sorta.
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4ignore this
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"is posting links to wikipedia what digg is all about?"
I was to understand that there would be punch and pie. - rastan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fictional OS's? So does that include Microsoft Bob?
- BransonLAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was going to ask where the Commodores are. I didn't see them. Didn't figure they would be under the early ones.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I hate to be rather a bit dippy here but...I didn't see X Tree Gold anywhere on the list?
Contrary to popular belief, X Tree was a really neat little derivative of Xenix... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0> I would think that the https://www.youos.com/ would also qualify as an OS.
Not a stupid suggestion actually. You might well think so, but actually it's just a GUI - I personally think anyway - please prove me wrong if I am!
As wikipedia says - "An operating system (OS) is a software program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. The OS performs basic tasks, such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing the processing of instructions, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files."
Does YouOS do this?. Hmmm, bit of a gray area if you think about it, depends what exactly their backend server software is doing I reckon. I'm assuming not, unless it's very low level code running on their server hardware. I think there's definitely some overlap though. - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh yeah...Speaking of ancient relics... I had an Adam computer with a tape drive... Remember Buck Rogers and the planet of Zoom?
- eolite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is a good one.
O-Yes - The operating system which is "54% quicker than Windows 95 or OS/2"
