- DeadFox1, on 11/04/2009, -0/+15Droid buyers: I look forward to hearing about and seeing the new toy! I haven't seen this much excitement about a new phone in 2 years!
-iPhone user - danvi, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Friday, to be exact!
- Jaizu, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4"and not everybody wants to pay £35-a-month for an iPhone." If only it was that cheap. It's more like $80 a month here(Canada). And that's for a 1GB max.
- phyx726, on 11/04/2009, -0/+43 more days! Verizon users rejoice!
- Barackalypse, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Great, can I buy any of these for under $300 without a wireless plan? Windows Mobile has many options in this price point without the hassle of a wireless contract. I've been using Windows Mobile for about 4 years now and would like to give the open source Android a try, but frankly I'm having trouble finding anything Android that is affordable. Its really rather discouraging that closed source Microsoft run devices are readily available at lower price points.
- NYYBronxBombers, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4same! :)
- craggatt, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4I agree i've given motorola 2 chances in the past and both phones have been garbage. They seem to work fine for 2-3 months then you have to start getting used to pulling the battery out.
- woofers07, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3If I wait till December I get an additional $50 off. I still can't decide if it's worth it or not, especially since my BlackBerry is falling apart.
- psychoace, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Cause it's going to be around longer then the G1 cause of the minimal internal ram the G1 has. I know you can root your phone and install an optimized rom but most consumers wont do that so they are not going to be able to get Android 2.0 like people who own the magic most likely will. I know my G1 is on it's last legs of relevence in the Android fight but that's technology for you.
- nurbsenvi, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4I don't trust Motorola's build quality...
- marmotjmarmot, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3we don't serve their kind in here....
- proverbs17, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Everyone should be thrilled about what is happening in the smartphone world. The competition between iPhones, Android phones, Windows moblie, pre, (and whatever else there is), provides great competition that should cause prices to drop over all.
It's ALL good!
Now if the monthly cost's drop to where I want them to be (approx $49/mo for unlimited) I would be buying one. Maybe next year ? - inactive, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2This is a rubbish guide that only focuses on carrier specific details rather than hardware specific spec. The HTC Magic 32A NON GOOGLE is just as good as the Hero and includes Sense UI now and it packs more ram than the Droid
- Apex3, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I don't see why the Magic is on there but not the G1. I messed with one at T Mobile, and it's just a G1 without a keyboard, I'm running the same firmware and everything on my G1, with the same on screen keyboard, in addition to my real keyboard
I'd love to have a Droid though, it looks awesome. - roguewriter, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3Square corners makes the Droid seem bigger than it is, along with no multi-touch, and a clunky keyboard. Android 2.0 (Eclair) looks awesome. Speed wise the Droid rocks. Apps look great and respond nicely. I'm just not impressed with what are going to be things that will annoy me to no end when the "kewl" factor has worn off.
I'm waiting for a 2nd generation Eclair based phone that's had a little more attention paid to the QOL details that affect day-to-day long term ease of use. - roguewriter, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Well, I don't mind a real keyboard as opposed to a touchscreen keyboard. The Droid's keyboard is clunky because the keys are flat and sandwiched together. It's really not thumb friendly. Especially if you have large hands. Also, I'm still trying to figure out why they included a direction pad on a touchscreen phone.
- Mankind121, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2HTC Hero on sprint is kicking ass
- Barackalypse, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Sadly after currency conversion that is still only $61 Canadian a month, which means once again Canadians get screwed on pricing of electronic items.
- mr_ziy, on 11/04/2009, -2/+3I would have to disagree, I've been through about 4-5 moto's and they can stand a beating, hell my Pebl went through the washing machine and it's still chugging along!
- junaeroplane, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1for the first time in a long time i feel behind with the times...
- rebrad, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I'll be in line for the Droid
- psychoace, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1At least it seems like a lot of phone makers are thinking the same cause most Android phones from LG to Motorola are coming out with an actual keyboard. There will be a good selection of choice by the time either of our 2 year contract is up (unless you want to buy now which there still is a good selection already out there for the taking)
- craggatt, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I personally much prefer the "clunky" keyboard style. In my experience its easier to type on a keyboard with tactile respose than on a touch screen. Though multi touch is an awesome feature that more phone manufacturers need to embrace.
- dennisa31, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1its interesting guys!
/s - godsdead, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1HTC Hero ftw, its what im rocking :)
- proverbs17, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Get used to it. Most people can't afford to keep up (unless of course you build the next 'thing' and become a billionaire.
Do what I do. Sit back and watch. Wait for the dust to settle then buy... - PhilipUk, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1These are not the Droid's you're looking for.
- craggatt, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1yeah the directional pad does seem redundant, perhaps its more for moving the cursor about when typing than anything else. Also i misunderstood what you meant by clunky, thanks for clearing that up.
- deslock, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1@psychoace
I wish you were right but unfortunately the trend has switched the other direction.
There are no known next gen phones (snapdragon) in development with a physical keyboard.
The Droid is the only closest thing to it.
Look at the X10 from Sony, the Acer and even the latest from HTC. HTCs only known full slider on Android is still the G1.
It really bums me out because I'm on tmobile and I want a replacement for my G1 but must have a physical keyboard.
And for you fans of virtual keyboards I can give you an example easily why they suck. Try playing a real game on the iphone... the controls suck, your thumbs take up half the visible space and it pretty much ruins the experience. Emulators aren't supported on iphone but on Android the best apps are game emulators (Genesis, Doom, Quake, SNES, SCUMM and NES) and a physical keyboard is an absolute must. - EtherGnat, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1A lot of people have had success getting their NE2 upgrade moved up. Send an e-mail to customer service and ask, you might be surprised.
- ArmandoM, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I'd take a flat and sandwiched together keyboard over a thick phone any day...
But I'll have to actually try one out before I make any final decisions. - bizzywho, on 11/04/2009, -3/+3An American tech blog needs to redo this so that everything is in dollars ($) and American carriers.
- Apex3, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0Fair enough. I just can't stand touch screen keyboards
- mr_ziy, on 11/04/2009, -2/+1OHHHH GOOOD FOR YOUUUUU
- azpat, on 11/04/2009, -6/+1this is the same problem winmo has. too many phones, carriers, plans, packages, etc. The iPhone makes it easy.
