- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Cost at CompUSA is pretty lame, Trust me I just quit my job there. They inflate the costs for their employees so the margin from their real cost and the cost they post in their terminals are substancially different. CompUSA truly does suck.
- queef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of Maddox's article regarding CompUSA..
http://maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=compusa_sucks - danielson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You won't be saving that much money. All major retailers sell the big ticket items at only a little bit above cost anyways... This would only be a good deal if it was Cost +7% on accessories too (that's where the cost on USB cables is like $1-2 and they sell them for $20-$30).
It's not that good of a deal... - JasonQG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's hard to say if this is that good of a deal without knowing what "cost" is for anything.
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hate to be a stick in the mud, but a lot of those items are low margin items anyways. For example a PSP retail is $249.99 but at cost its like $245 or something like that. They barely make 7% on laptops even at their normal prices. The way they make money is on small items like usb cables. However, I'm sure there shall be some sick deals.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh cost +7% who's going to tell us the ACTUAL cost. . . .
- holiday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't Waste your time... Used to work there... Most of the hardware that the ad references is right around that cost anyway... plus on an overall purchase they will give you the hardware at cost in order to sell you ancillary items and protection plans.
However the one good thing that I will say is that the replacement plans at CompUSA for items under $250 are pretty sweet make a deal...i.e. buy a digital camera or a PDA and when they pitch the protection plan have them throw in a memory card cable photo paper or something that you know they mark up to help justify the cost of the plan.
If the item "breaks" for any reason, like 2 years later you get a replacement or store credit! it works out great.
Bought a digital camera 3 years ago bought the plan got a free memory stick (plan and stick same cost) 3 years later got a new camera 3x as nice! - Paul_Allen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell Yeah!
I'm picking up my 2 GB SD card this weekend. - Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've talked to employees at Best Buy, and they say one of the best employee discounts are on big screen tv's. Have fun!"
That's true, when I worked at Best Buy I checked into that, a couple of the TVs are up to $1,000 off with the employee discount (cost +5%). I think the biggest deals are on accessories though. I used my discount to get a USB printer cable, normally $40, i got it for $4. Some item I got for my cable TV was 4 or 5 dollars and I got it for under $0.50. - spradling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sucks.
They don't tell you their cost, you have to go to the register and they tell you what you save (if anything) when you buy it.
Plus it's good for only 1 day until 1pm.
Plus it's no good for Bose, Alpine, Mitsubishi and some others. - surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****, I'm not going to be up by 1 PM on the 19th.
- CompUSAEmployee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About the protection plans.... The managers hound us employees to sell them. They make you feel like you are worthless unless you get a plan sold on every item. It's not like we, the employees, make much spiff off of them. The plans can be fairly worthwhile, like the laptop plan gets you upto 2 free batteries and 2 screen replacements along with the usual parts and labor included.
- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish they had Fry's Computers here on the east coast. From what I understand, those places are sweet.
- Red_Eye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the question remains, do you trust them to disclose their true cost?
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In San Francisco every once in a while I will go to CompuUSA to pick up a game and look at the cables and such. The cables will be about $30-$40. Then I'll walk down the block to Central Computers and pick up the same cables for 5 bucks!
- Flyngwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CompUSA hypes and ***** the customer more than Circuit City and Best Buy combined. It's a ***** store. Please don't give them your money.
- Paul_Allen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would you even want to buy Bose products? Bose is probably the most over-rated speaker company ever. Do some research and you can get WAY better speakers for the same price.
- dvdd127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CompUSA sucks.. they never have what i go in there for... what should make me think they will have what i would want to buy on Saturday with that coupon
- CompUSAEmployee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0usb cables cost customer $27, employees get for $3.
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work at CompUSA and yes they do mark up cables. This is how they make most of their money. They buy a cat5 cable for $5 and sell it for $35. We, the employees get it for $5.
- Vankalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this kinda sucks. I'm going to go and take a new apple quad tower to the checkout only to find out it probably was cheaper at the regular price. If you knew their "cost" price first you could find some big ass deals I'm sure.
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. Thought this was a big joke. Decent design, but the UPC code looks goofy. It also looked like "you pay us..and seven percent extra". Meh. Might use it.
- dailyclerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is a pretty good deal. granted there are times when compusa is pretty expensive. I'm going to check it out and use my treo to check out the prices from other places. =) do they do price matching?
- ThaDaveMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Offer expires tomorrow..
Either someone dugg this too late or this is truley crap! - zafw05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's funny, I have yet encounter a store that will sell their soul over warranty. Then again I'm poor and don't buy much expensive stuff. :P
- tidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crap no ipods
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah they price match with a few exceptions.
- dorkusmalorkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The plans can be fairly worthwhile, like the laptop plan gets you upto 2 free batteries and 2 screen replacements along with the usual parts and labor included."
I've been waiting since before labor day for my replacement laptop battery as well. As far as the warranties, it really doesn't matter if it's the employee or his supervisor or the company as a whole that try to force them on you, the buyer doesn't know the difference and it doesn't really matter. They are all the same thing as the only person he/she sees is the salesman on the floor. Being a customer just really sucks sometimes. - deez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only if the sale was on black friday items.. maybe then this deal would have been worth it. cost + 7% is just not that appealing.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone asked about Black Friday, go here: www.bfads.com
As for CompUSA, it's sorta sad the direction they've gone. I used to spend HOURS there sorting through all they had to offer (floppy drives, these new CD-ROM drives, etc..(ok, it was the mid-80's)) and they've pretty much gone to crap with the way their stores look. They look like frickin' WallyMart! Disorganized, misplaced items, their gaming section is a JOKE... So, I figure they're done unless they get new corporate management. - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ACTUALLY I work at comp usa this will save you on several things, but not TONS of money. Ill find out if its real tomorrow..."
"The Cost at CompUSA is pretty lame, Trust me I just quit my job there. They inflate the costs for their employees so the margin from their real cost and the cost they post in their terminals are substancially different. CompUSA truly does suck."
He said, she said. I'll stick with newegg, thanks. - runner91786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ACTUALLY I work at comp usa this will save you on several things, but not TONS of money. Ill find out if its real tomorrow...
- Anekdoten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Howcome it doesnt work in Puerto Rico ? Bastard, racists ! ;)
- dorkusmalorkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I HATE Comp USA. I was so excited when I first found out they were in my town...until I tried to buy 2 Tungsten T3's last Christmas. I refused the extended warranty on them and it was all they could do to just finish the sale without it. The guy called his manager and they tried to throw in the aluminum hard cases they were offering on a rebate in for free if I chose the most expensive warranty for each one. Again I told him no and it was all I could do to not tell him where to put them. The guys hand was actually shaking when he was writing up the ticket. And when I went to customer service to pay they asked again if I was sure I didn't want the warranty. I was livid but bought them anyway. They jerked me around so much about those warranties. They could care less that I was spending over $600 in their store. I pretty much just order online now unless I have to go to a physical store. They SUCK!
- halfway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work at compusa, as a cashier. All I can say is that that day will be hell for me. So many questions and problems... ugh. At least I don't work that much. But cables we get really low, I bet the products at cost aren't going to be too low, but low enough were it should help to buy it. I'm not going to say the store is the greatest, cause it has its flaws, but I think itll do. One thing that sucks is how they hound us to sell protection plans. When people don't buy them on expensive items: Printers, cameras, computers. I just laugh. Because it's actually a pretty good deal. And it helps the company out. But I'm not here to change opinions, might as well see what the store has to offer that day. Lot's of work will go into preparing it all the day before.
- madjack3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw Comp USA, they suck!
You can probably get anything they sell, even with the coupon, cheaper at NewEgg. - scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't a good deal, I work there -- I should know.
We do it all the time, it never really catches on.
But pay attention to the black friday ad, crazy *****. - ZedX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeeeeeez is CompUSA still in business?
Also: What's the deal with people whining about Best Buy in the comments? They don't have anything to do with this. - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If our retail price is already lower than cost + 7%, you get the lower price." ...sweet, I'd love to pay the same inflated cost at CompUSA.
No digg. - jrsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CompUSA packed up their stuff and left this town (Waco, Texas).. I guess Waco just couldn't support them.. If their prices were competitive with Best Buy or Circuit City maybe they would've done better...
- spinxter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I pay the extra money to buy things from CompUSA some times. The last thing I bought was an Ipaq. I could have gotten it $30 cheaper at Best Buy, and I could have bought the warranty $20 cheaper just about anywhere. Why did I use CompUSA? Their extended warranty covers ALL DAMAGE. I can drop my Ipaq on the ground and run over it with my truck and they will still overnight me a new one for up to 2 years. Nobody else will cover "accidents." It is worth the extra money to me.
- Warlokk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fry's is horrible, I stopped shopping there years ago, after 3 pieces of hardware I bought there on separate occasions, video card, CPU and HDD, all failed within 24 hours of purchase, one of which lost me a ton of data (hard drive, didn't fail until I had moved all my data to it, verified it, and wiped the old drive). They sell open-box or returned items as if they were new, without testing them. I will never go into that place again. PC Club and NewEgg are much better anyway.
- justdarick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I wish they had Fry's Computers here on the east coast. From what I understand, those places are sweet."
There is one in Duluth, GA (about 20 minutes north of Atlanta)... I would consider that East Coast :-) - algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They will never disclose their cost of items to anyone except for corporate management. Their supposed retail cost is still a markup from their true cost from the vendors. This is like when a car dealer says they are selling at invoice or below invoice price. Trust me, they still make a good profit from this.
- spinxter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They sell open-box or returned items as if they were new, without testing them."
I was shopping for a capture card at Office Max once. The manager told me to buy one, and if I didn't like it I could take it back a month later and he would shrink-wrap it back up and sell it as new. There should be a law against this. - Madhattan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember the good ol days at compusa of buying graphics cards with cash, then returning the box with a crappy and/or broken graphics card inside.. Sigh...
- pete8282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've talked to employees at Best Buy, and they say one of the best employee discounts are on big screen tv's. Have fun!
- TheDecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, "Cost + 7% + everyone in the store badgering you to buy the protection plan until you're ready to claw their faces off"...
dorkusmalorkus, I'm with you buddy. My most recent and final experience with CompUSA was similar. I went to buy an HP PocketPC and they would not quit hounding me to buy the protection plan. It was a nightmare, I kept refusing, they kept bugging, telling me how insane it was that I wasn't going to purchase the plan. Then finally after three different guys had their go at me, the manager came up and said he would sell me the PDA at a lower price so that when he added the protection plan, it totalled at the original price of the PDA. I was so pissed and just wanted to get out of there, I said okay...besides there was nothing to lose. But the experience was miserable and embarrasing and incredibly frustrating. CompUSA is an embarrasment to retail, and I would never shop there again and do everything I can to let people know never to shop there. - JustinWalsh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well not sure about compUSA but I know at bestbuy there is a HUGE cost/retail difference on the in-house products, like Insignia brand DVD players and what not. May not be the best quality product, but money can be saved. Also lots of markup in the Home-Theater like departments as well.
- TheSpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The last time they did this, I asked about Apple computers, and the price difference was very small.
