Ok, your story checks out. - hndgns4hrts, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46This is *****. I just got laid off, two weeks ago. Now my previous store is being closed, just got off the phone with a friend/co worker. All employee benefits (ie. employee discount) have been lost as of tonight. Everyone got told today about this - so much for notice.
A liquidation company will be taking over - per tomorrow - as you note most stores are no longer even on the CompUSA website.
The store will be open until everything is sold, I honestly wounder why they are not just shipping everything to other stores.. - nzknzknzk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Umm, if your store isnt on the list, then it is closing. Closing means an enormous sale and huge discounts. I would think that falls under "Tech Deals".
- nx01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Kind of bummed about this actually. In Milwaukee they were the only place that gave decent deals and had employees that were useful (most of the time). This leaves only Best Buy for us here (and MilwaukeePC....boooo), so it looks like NewEgg.com from here on out.

Santa Rosa - DryvBy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24CompUSA is a great alternative to Best Buy. This will ultimately suck for just going to the stores to shop.
- 4ndr3w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Damnit, my CompUSA is gone. Even though I dislike all bigbox stores, CompUSA had Mac software. Darn.
- Dallas70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I worked at CompUSA...well, I did until last Friday when I was part of the Corporate layoff that took out over half the employees.
Just a history of the past 7 years - Carlos Slim purchased the company in 2000 at $800 million and if you know Slim it's that he buys low and sell high, in our case it wasn't working out as planned and without going into too much detail he put in his own guys including the current CEO Roman Ross (This happened around late Summer-early fall 2006) who overhauled our executive dept and marketing (Including adding the character Meg Pixel to advertisements). A few weeks later word leaked out Slim was looking to sell the company, which analysts said would be at a loss, something he rarely does.
2 weeks ago $455 million was invested into the company by Slim, if you do the math (57% additional funds compared to the $800 million you originally invested in which you're already losing money) that tells me that someone, most likely Ross, presented him with a business plan and he approved it. Shortly thereafter executives were laid off, then our directors, Friday it was the big layoff at Corporate (Many depts were decimated, it wasn't pretty) and I have a feeling that the corporate office will shortly be no more.
So what happened? IMO they were purchased and will be merged, possible the new company already has locations at the sites being closed, also could be that Slim wants the numbers to be attractive enough to be purchased, or he simply wants it to be a slimmer, smaller model. Wish I knew, all I can say is that Slim doesn't want a store to make enough to survive, he wants it to make good money and in Comp's case it failed. - alberto24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14wow - all of the atlanta stores are gone.
- icedevil6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yeah, I appreciate that the submitter implied something useful instead of just repeating or worse yet copying the article.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Great, so I'm stuck with Best Buy (won't shop there after they refused to honor a 3 year extended warranty after 19 months, and I had all the paperwork), Circuit City (horrible beyond belief in my area), Wal-Mart (need I say more?), and the internet (not that I mind, but sometimes I don't want to wait even 2 days for a new part when my main computer is dead).
I need to move back to Vegas. At least then I have a Fry's. - Zera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Here's a link to they actual news story: http://www.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUSN2724379720070228
- buknaked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yep, tomorrow morning a liquidation company comes in and takes control. almost all team members and mgrs were asked to "stick it out" and help close the store, which is supposed to take 60-90 days. Yes, compusa from Slim all the way down to many store mgrs was one of the worst managed companies around. but, because of their poor management many good quality people that rely on a steady paycheck are out of work. there was very little if any warning for most team members. if the rest of the remaining stores are still open a year from now i would be shocked. do not expect any "tech deals" until there is nothing but ***** left in the stores. it is just a real shame the way corporate handled this situation. I also feel for the customers that did purchase TAP. granted their warranty service will be handled on site, but many purchased the warranty so that they could deal with somebody locally. as for all the "hate posters", realize that no brick and mortar store can compete with newegg or any other online retailer. also, try waking up tomorrow and find that you don't have a pay check coming in... it sucks. not being able to go into a store and instantly purchase computer parts will suck, but we all move on.
- bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Nooooo! they can't close, they're the only store that I know of that sells cases of Bawls (an energy drink for those of you who are confused)
where else am i gonna have to go to get caffiene and to dink around on the Mac Pro w/ the 30" screen
This is truly a sad day... - Ryokurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Competition from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, and internet retailers and $100 million in unsellable inventory. They were rumored to be up for sale a few weeks ago.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Their not even leaving one open in the Chicago area.
- dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It really works! All you need to do is take the 2 out of 128, then add the 1 and 2 and you've got 23. That 8 is not important.
- Dark2Light, on 10/12/2007, -0/+112+2+8+1+2+8=23...
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I worked in the Woburn, Ma one about 6-7 years ago and I'm glad to see it gone.
Place was a ***** run by morons who treated their employees like *****. I had one of my managers transfered by HQ after he berated me in front of a customer because the customer wanted to see a manager despite me asking if I could help. He flat out refused to talk to me and when I brought him to the manager the guy had a simple monitor question to which my manager bitched at me on why I couldn't help him properly.
When we had to reset an isle we had to go by the planners sent by corporate. Thing is, corporate had no ***** clue what was in stock or what amounts we carried. Common sense would be to reset the isle so it looks clean & presentable. Ever after explaining to my manager how setting it up like the plan-o-gram was going to look like a ***** and be a waste of time they still made me do it. Only to "fix" it when they saw how bad it looks.
***** that place. They were a good computer store until they started to try and compete with BestBuy and carry Tv's, DVD players, stereos and other ***** employees would get no training on yet expected to sell (with TAP of course). The seasonal crap drove us *****. What ***** need did we have carrying 200 cheap-ass Casio keyboards just for the Xmas season only to sell maybe 10. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The whole chain seems on the way out. From other articles, they seem to want to stay in smaller markets without too much competition. Sooner or later a BB or CC will come and what are they going to do then?
You can run, but you cannot hide. I remember when they were a computer store and not A/V oriented. Instead, of being a great computer store they choose to take on the big box stores and were unable to beat them on price. Like Computer City and Egghead before them they will be missed for they were computer stores. The Internet killed the computer store. It was nice to browse a store filled with tech, just to kill an hour or two figuring out what stuff you wanted to upgrade your PC with. Clicking on items on Newegg is cheap, but not as satisfying. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8compusa is completely getting out of the chicago market? the only IL store will be Rockford (an hour away)... Seems like a bad move..
- CamperBob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Hmm, none left in the Seattle area, either.
That means the only large retail computer store in the area is Fry's, in Renton. The Bellevue CompUSA was quite a bit more convenient. - MrFatalistic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8shh! it already hit front page, don't need to make it die an early death.
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9*Points finger at Newegg*
- fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Get 200 mg caffeine pills, take one, and drink with water. It's hundreds of times cheaper and easier to find in stores.
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, this REALLY sucks! I am a college student and I work at CompUSA part time in Freehold, NJ. I even helped open the Brick, NJ store as well. I was planning on working there (Freehold) for my spring break coming up in two weeks. This really, really sucks because I was totally counting on that income. Sad to see it go, but of course there are other places I can work.
Surprising, but at the same time, not surprising to me. Having worked at CompUSA for several years part time over the summer and winter breaks, I know we were having a very hard time competing with chains like Best Buy for numerous reasons. - geuisteses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I guarantee the PS3 will be the last thing on the shelves.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Actually, the laptop plan was really worth it since it covered the screen. Generally at the end of the warranty you could do the old "accidentally leave in a pen & close the screen" tactic and get yourself a brand new model since replacing the screen would cost more than it's worth.
My friend got his old Powerbook replaced with a Ti book by tossing it in the microwave for 3 seconds. They were going to replace it with an iBook but he complained that his Powerbook had the cardslots which he needed so they bumped him.
One of the perks of both of us working there. Knowing the techs :) - mrpippy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think you read the page right--every store *NOT* on that list will be closing down. That means every store in San Diego, and every store in LA. Pretty much every CompUSA in SoCal will be closing, except for Santa Barbara/Goleta (the one nearest to me...damn)
- Dou6, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20Who cares, CompUSA sucks. Buying a laptop there is worse than bestbuy, at least the people at best buy just try the hard sell instead of belittling your intelligence on top of it. Sorry sir, I don't want a $250 protection plan on a $1k laptop. No, that doesnt make me a moron.
Their parts selection is crap too. You might as well just hit up newegg. - phroztbyt3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm a tech a the highland park store.. just found out today from my manager.. the bright side is, all those customers are now my personals ^__^
- adapter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow all the Mass locations except Holyoke are gone. I work in the Salem, NH one and it's staying.
- bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yeah, i know you can get it at thinkgeek and in the form of caffiene pills but TG is somewhere around 45 bucks a case, and the caffeine pills just arent as fun as asking some one to grab your bawls or the myraid of other innuendos available due to the name
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm kinda surpised to see Santa Barbara on the list. We have no Fry's, Comp USA is the only computer store around if you don't count a run down PC club. A lot of businesses and people are leaving due to the high real estate costs, the only people left are poor people, rich people like Oprah Winfrey, retirees and students. The working middle class is almost non-existant at this point.
- brandiniman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Being that we never have TV spots, we advertise on FM radio and sell satellite, and have the worst restocking system known to man.
- ic00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The closest one to me now: 5.8 miles
The closest one to me after: 129 miles :( - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
***** CompUSA.
Also ***** Geek Squad. - Lighthater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The Ann Arbor store is a disgrace, but it was always good to play them against Best Buy, who are practically next door.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9NOBODY change the number of diggs dryvby has. It may result in the collapse of the universe.
- PHovey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yay! Des Moines is still open. Thank goodness for that, the only other local competition is Best Buy...
- wscott81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yep the stores in Columbus, Oh are closing as well, joy the Fun of looking for a new job
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Jesus DryvBy... you just emphasized the point that douche bag know-it-all techs are a good reason that people don't come back. Folks that know what a USB port is don't need to pay you for your expertise.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The entire movie 23 kept reminding me of south park when cartman is giving his show and tell to "prove" that kyle caused 9/11.
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6im glad mine isn't closing. its not that bad of a place and they have quite a selection.
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad the one at Lexington is still open. I feel bad for the people who get ripped off when they purchase something from CompUSA. One thing that comes to my mind... a DVI->VGA adapter.. costs 28$ @ CompUSA... I got one from eBay for less than 5$ (including shipping).
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dang, nothing in the San Diego area.
Texas and Florida are really lucky. - DryvBy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9No, they need to get better customers. When I worked there, I had a old lady ask me where cactus ports where located. After a few minutes, I figured out she meant USB cables. (Look at the USB logo...). I'm not joking. The customers always made me want to escape life because they're so dang cheap, greedy, and I was sick of hearing "Where's my rebate coupon?" or "Can you read me the instructions on my rebate?".
- fpssledge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What? Replacement plan is the best thing ever! READ!!!!
CompUSA doesn't advertise it. But you can spend $20 on a replacement plan for an item. Let's say a $400 video card. You don't even have to buy it from CompUSA. Bring the unopened vid card to CompUSA and ask for a replacement plan. They give you it. What does a replacement plan do? It means that in one year after purchasing the plan, you can walk into the store with your vid card (whether it's working or broken) and ask for a replacement. Not any replacement. But anything worth $400. Which means, in a year, that vid card could've dropped in price by $100. You guys see this all coming together. You're getting the $800 worth of video cards (basically up-to-date) for only $420. Most people probably forget about the plan, but if you remember, it only benefits you. - cgomez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Wow. I originally thought that Consumerist article that hit the homepage a week ago was crap since it was, well, from the Consumerist.
It looks like my store is safe, so woo-hoo. To the haters of the store who think anybody but Newegg is satan, CompUSA is one of the better retailers. Dedicated Apple section, wide selection of products and fair prices (except on cables, which EVERYONE gouges on) and reasonably priced tech services. -
