- mrbubbleboy, on 12/06/2007, -4/+141I guess Comcast really is a bastard everywhere. I just moved on Tuesday and had my comcast services transferred and it was a total nightmare. Basically the tech installed my internet modem and router in my babies room (which was a total safety hazard) and said that was the only place possible he could do it. He was completely rude and rolled his eyes at me when i said he needed to put it in another room. He said he had 3 other jobs to get to and that he didn't have time, so I kicked him and out decided to call the the next day and try to get another guy to come out who wasn't such a lazy prick. After 9 calls to the Comcast, Yes 9!!!! and 48 hours later the internet is now in my office room where it belongs. It took the new tech only 10 minutes to move it. I really want this makes the homepage.!
- homiczek, on 12/06/2007, -4/+75"Comcast is an Evil Corporation that Sucks" hihi what a title!
- Phasmorphage, on 12/06/2007, -0/+52I don't even have a choice to get any other ISP here, all I see is Comcast and AT&T available.
It's like choosing between having your balls cut off or deep fried :P
And I swear they dropped a cap again, I can't get above 300kb/s down on any torrents - zerobackup, on 12/06/2007, -2/+51Still can't properly seed torrents of my home-made DJ mixes, thanks Comcast, you suck my ass. (btw the encryption of my utorrent packets has had no effect)
- drlha, on 12/06/2007, -0/+37100% true though. I speak as a Comcast customer.
- akatherder, on 12/07/2007, -0/+32I called Comcast for pricing one time. I politely tried getting off of the phone without placing an order but the salesman kept hounding me to order now. I said "no, thank you." and I hung up.
A couple days later, my wife calls me at work and lets me know that the Comcast guy is at our apartment installing the stuff I ordered. She wasn't too happy that I didn't tell her the Comcast tech was coming over. After I clarified that I didn't order anything, I had her hand the phone to the Comcast tech. I asked him to disconnect everything and to leave.
Of course I called Comcast to complain and their only response was that my wife signed the form when the tech came to the door so what's the big deal? Eventually I found someone who agreed with the fact that making unsolicited visits to install unauthorized service was a bad idea. She may have just been feeding me a line so I would stop calling to complain, but it sounded like she had something against the guy who sent the tech to my house and wanted to bust his balls. - pinina73, on 12/06/2007, -3/+33
Very bad monopoly, change some day - EdgarVerona, on 12/07/2007, -1/+28Change today. Burn down your nearest Comcast building.
/Illegal Incitement to Violence - bbqsalad, on 12/06/2007, -1/+24F them right in the A.
- nousplacidus, on 12/07/2007, -0/+20Its a monopoly, thats the problem. A local monopoly in the cities affected but a monopoly none the less.
- nblsavage, on 12/06/2007, -0/+18Verizon is rolling out FiOS in my area...Internet and phone are already available. As soon as TV is (in Jan) I'm dumping Comcast like a bad habit.
- drlha, on 12/07/2007, -0/+18If it were a free market, I'd have a choice of providers from which I could get my local channels in HD from. I don't its Comcast or nothing.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+18One thing they also forgot to mention is that Comcast not only shapes traffic to mess with peoples bandwidth, but they also give preference to the test sites such as dslreports, speedguide and related sites so that you think you are getting the same or better speed than what you paid for. When you go to a non-test site however, your traffic is being manipulated to save them money, since they over-subscribe their networks.
- EdgarVerona, on 12/07/2007, -1/+17I agree 100%. Comcast is one of the finest real-world examples of why Monopolies are a bad idea in any society.
They provide a service: but only barely enough to keep their customers from going without the service at all. They've arranged for exclusivity deals with apartment complexes and other group-based housing to make sure that even if their customer base WANTED to leave for another company, they couldn't. And they don't mind charging twice as much (or more) for less consistent/quality services as their locked out competitors.
I use Comcast for my internet at home, but only due to an exclusivity contract that they had with my complex (which, apparently, has been ruled illegal recently... I'm shopping for a new vendor now).
This company sucks big time. - EdgarVerona, on 12/07/2007, -1/+15That's where the real question comes in. There's some people who think that Government intrusion is so bad that they shouldn't even break up Monopolies. But then we end up with companies like Comcast, with their micro chasm monopolies.
I hate Comcast so very, very much. - grgt1994, on 12/07/2007, -1/+15Concast lied to me when I got digital cable with my plasma. They told me that I NEED a cable box somewhere in the house or I won't get HD on the plasma (even though it is cable carded and no where near the craptacular cable box). But at least I got the cable box for free. So 6 months later I called customer suckfest (oh I mean service), and was told that is wrong. I said, great take it away. They said, "oh ok, you get $5 off your bill then, but you need to deliver the box in person." Turns out the only service center left in our city is in the center of crime central, located literally right off the major interstate on a grungy access road. Many people were waiting in line at the office when i got there - outside the line was so long - and when I asked the first one that walked out how long they had waited, he said 1 hour from where I was (middle of a weekday I had off).
That's Concastic! - lewhich, on 12/07/2007, -0/+13I've never met anyone in the last couple of years who actually liked Comcast. They all had comcast because it is the only game in town (Baltimore, MD)
And people still believe America is a capitalist society ...

Thank goodness I have FiOS, but knowing the reputation of Verizon, I don't know how long it will be before they up-n-charge us an arm and a leg - luke123, on 12/06/2007, -3/+15I hated Comcast and RCN isn't much better, but I switched to them because Comcast's service was so bad and their scams became more and more expensive. They offer you package deals -- TV cable, phone and Internet service -- at a reduced cost for a year and then jack the price way up after the promotion is over, leaving you to either pay up or go through a whole new install. I will say this about RCN, they're fast with fixes.
- raada, on 12/07/2007, -0/+12I only like the Evil Corporations that DON'T suck...
- rkzda, on 12/07/2007, -2/+14It took ten minutes to move it, the guy could of done it himself, but then if he had a problem they would say it was his fault. Don't be a tool.
- sesstreets, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11Torrent Please!
- dallashigh, on 12/07/2007, -0/+11Umm... I get up to 1.9MB/s on my 15/15 FiOS. So yes, I would say 300k is a bad speed for torrents if your line is capable of higher.
- Falc, on 12/07/2007, -1/+12there are ads on this page??? ;)
ad block ftw - D3koy, on 12/07/2007, -0/+10I don't know why you think this is Comcast-specific...I live in an area where if you want Cable internet there is only 1 choice, and they suck...and their prices are through the roof...
- ritzcracker, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10those are the ***** that killed tech tv........
- Farik, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12And that is a bad speed for torrents?
- Responder656, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10ITS COMCASTIC
- Hyperion1144, on 12/07/2007, -0/+9Totally agree. I've been running Ad-Block+FiltersetG+Flashblock for so long, I don't really even know what the internet looks like for the sheeple anymore...
Haven't seen it in ages. - Phasmorphage, on 12/07/2007, -0/+9I meant total. And considering that back in the days of OiNK I used to be able to hit 800kb/s, it is indeed :(
- natewitt, on 12/06/2007, -2/+10Its called a cable company. Monopolies are supposed to be illegal for a reason. My slave master is named Mediacom.
- Boognish, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8I know my parents have charter, and they have had more problems with reception, and connectivity to the net, than I have had with comcast.
- Spamcan, on 12/06/2007, -1/+9Comcast truly does suck. I had basic cable and they started charging me for the family package out of nowhere, and the only reason I had basic is it cut the cost of internet by $10 a month, so it should have come out to around even. It's taken a bare minimum of 3 calls and at least 45 minutes to actually get ahold of anyone and get my issue resolved every time I've had to call them about anything, usually in the middle of transferring me to 5 different departments they just hang up on me. Last month my internet went out and after 2 hours on the phone I was told my modem was dead, after picking up a new one and spending another hour on the phone the 4th person I talked to finally figured out that a breaker had tripped locally or something and it wasn't due to my modem at all. It took two freaking comcast guys on separate trips to find the damn thing, get into the room where it was located and flip it back on, thankfully both on the same day. If I didn't live in an apartment theres no way I'd put up with this *****.
- krummb, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8Just about, I'm a former employee and Charter had some serious issues...at least with Charter you could work the retention team to get a good deal, Comcast doesn't give a *****.
- SouthsideIrish, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7Give me the name of a market monopoly company? Comcast was created by my village that gave them a franchise (monopoly power) so they would cable the village. Has nothing to do with the free market economy.
- cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -0/+6utorrent encyrption methods are worthless it seems... they are still able to throttle no problem (comcast),. not even switching over the the "ms net meeting" port works anymore. i used to get 300 to 500k down... it will only last a minute or two now.... then it will throttle down to 20k... pathetic. (with utorrent anyways). its comcast too, because my friend uses quest dsl... and his dl's are so-so at 150k plus.
look... there is no protection unless you have true tunneling(all headers encrypted too). except for destination and source ip at the router level only. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Just out of curiosity does anyone know if Charter sucks more than Comcast?
- andrewcsayer, on 12/06/2007, -1/+7You think you guys got problems? We have to deal with Telstra.
- zachlac, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6I have Comcast. It sucks. Horribly inconsistent connections, and yes if you were wondering they DO throttle bittorrent traffic, even the legal kind. Dugg!
- raada, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7That's why God invented the shotgun for unexpected visits like this. Forcing themselves into houses is not allowed even by Comcast, not yet at least.
- revelyn99, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Comcast totally sucks. I threaten to leave about every six months, which usually results in me getting some really great promotional deal. Most recently - $24.99 a month for a year of cable internet. I now know how they make that money back. Anyone with any other options for high speed internet should call and gouge them for what they can. Feel sorry for those who have no other option.
- SouthsideIrish, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5No it is not! This is government control of the economy at it's very best. It is all we detest.
- t3soro, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6comcast has a monopoly on the infrastructure, which was given to them by the local government.
- DucoNihilum, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5When I first read the title I thought it was a joke- satirizing the stupid kids that say things like "Evil Corporation"- when I found out the article was serious my apathetic levels went up by 3%.
- peestandingup, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5Yeah. Why didn't they just title it "Comcast is a bunch of smelly poopy heads."
- simile, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Woot! I am getting satellite installed Friday!
Comcast just raised prices, their picture quality is lame, on demand is slow as hell and often freezes in the middle of a movie, and they suck in a general kind of way! - ronintetsuro, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4I've been noticing all my torrents have been assy lately too. Oh wait, that's right, it's because Demonoid got axed.
- TheZorch, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5Dugg for telling us something most of us already know and for spreading the word to those who don't.
- Richandler, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4I don'tk now which is worse, Comcast treating customers like crap or the government subsidizing them.
- crawdad62, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4Wow do all you guys that dugg Spoo's comment down feel that breeze blow through your hair? Yeah that's right it went right over your head.
- Shirleycakes, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3I'd like to know what part of California. I had comcast for a year in the bay area - in that time they managed to knock a hole in my wall while installing, which they hid by moving the TV stand. After I complained and asked to have it fixed, it took six months of "escalation claims" to get someone out, who was three hours late for his window and forgot his tools when he left the job (half done). He refused to finish the job because he was "not told it was a wall patching", and then left a threatening note on my door claiming I had taken his tools "hostage". Customer service said they had no control over him because, while he is a comcast employee, he was a different department.
I've got a buddy who had Comcast cable installed. He found it curious that the room with his computer (not the room where the installation occurred) had its windows locks removed and found tape matching that which the comcast tech used in the other room marking the window from the outside. Sure enough, an unmarked van with a couple of guys staked out the house that night.
This is a common thing, apparently. After it happened he looked it up online and found more cases.
So maybe it's not the corporation, but the people they employ are certainly questionable. -
