- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Very nice. I would not use my ISP as my main email, but I like the clean look. And online voicemail checking.
- CDefense7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Why do people use ISP e-mail accounts anyway? Everyone I know who uses them change their ISP every year or so and of course have to change their e-mail address, too.
- rilindo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@lostknight,
Open source software always have a place with ISPs for email, since it is fairly cheap to build a mail server based on sendmail/qmail/postfix and then scale it up (unlike certain emails software on certain operating systems).
The significance is that Zimbra is not just a replacement for email, but also for calendering, address book directory, etc - in other words, an opensource MS Hosted Exchange competitor. With Comcast offering it, this is a big win for the effort to give Microsoft serious fits in the collaboration market. :D - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12And a quick glance at your history indicates that after you enthusiastically switch back to Comcast you will continue to whore yourself out for Zimbra. Do you really think Digg users are fooled by this crap? "OMG! What a great company/product! We should all give them business!"
- lostknight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Awesome news. Big win for Opensource, in a place that OpenSource has not done well so far!
- SpFmmTrist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Comcast Teams with HP, Plaxo and Zimbra to Launch Interactive SmartZone Communications Center:
http://news.taume.com/Technology/Internet/Comcast-Teams-with-HP-Plaxo-and-Zimbra-to-Launch-Interactive-SmartZone-Communications-Center-1173 - natch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Repeat after me: Bundling Is Bad.
Especially bundling of ISP services with other services. These companies change allegiances with the wind. Don't rely on any 'extra' service bundled with your ISP account. It will most likely be here today, gone with your personal data licensed away to others tomorrow. - gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In other breaking news...who the hell is stupid enough to care? If you use Comcast for email you're a tool. Just like you would be a tool if you used AOL email and they adopted Zimbra. :)
- punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is huge! zimbra has been talked about in the opensource and mac communities for a while now... after reading all these comments, i dont think most people understand what exactly zimbra is. afaik zimbra replaces all of your underlying "mail" servers with it's own and provides pop, imap and smtp support. check out the feature list: http://www.zimbra.com/pdf/Zimbra%20Collaboration%20Suite%20Feature%20List.pdf
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Comcast sucks rat balls...
- lostknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Zimbra can use Spamassassin and DSPAM, and this will change their email server to a standard opensource stack.
That being said, I would be just fine with fibre optic to the home.I already run a Zimbra Server. - natch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But is it a big deal, if Comcast can just swap it out with any other server any time they please?
Leaving you in the lurch. Most likely about six months after you get nicely settled in.
Been there, done that, with my current ISP (SBC, now AT&T).
The lesson is, don't rely on ISP-provided add-ons. - SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@rilindo: "certain emails software on certain operating systems"
This is Digg, don't be afraid to say "Exchange on Windows Server". If we haven't been sued into oblivion yet, that won't be what does it! - m00nb34m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Zimbra rocks. They've done a fantastic job of putting together a suite that is easy to use and very powerful.
- luken7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm stuck with Time Warner Cable here in NC. No technology for us .....
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Personally I just forward all my Comcast email to my Gmail account...
- asg1290, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is to fix their email systems, they need a clean slate to build it correctly. Think of all the cable companies and email systems Comcast has purchased over the last few years. This will bring all their email into one place finally. There are other pieces to this deal to besides Zimbra. Don't forget Bizanga, Cloudmark, Plaxo and Trend. Zimbra is just what you will see.
- gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Same here. Slowing weaning myself off comcast completely.
- wannabetenor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How can you be a company without revenue?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Comcast should fix what they have now, rather introducing more possible issues into their broadband environment. Such as stabilizing their email server and connections. Their email server is mostly down and when it is up however it just attracts Spam, Spam, Spam. I have a better chance getting important emails through a web based service such as Yahoo! and Hotmail, then with my own Comcast email account.
Comcast better do this soon, Verizon is now offering residential fibre optics to areas that are now wired with fibre. This is going to leave Comcast at the starting line holding their bowl of Slowky Turtle soup not only for Internet speed, but for Television and Phone service too. Right now they are offering Fibre TV,Phone, and Net for also $99.00 for two years which Comcast is only offering their service for one. - vonralls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Cool. This is the same client that GoDaddy give customers isn't it?
- EvilGnome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree the look is awesome especially considering what most online mailers look like. If I used that I'd be proud to switch, but I'll stick with my Thunderbird.
- peterjhill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3got to agree with the first poster.. I would never use my ISP's email address for anything. When I find the perfect ISP, maybe, otherwise I'll stick with other options.
- wario, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Comcast currently supports online voicemail checking as long as you have the comcast digital voice service. Looks good, working for the company, i know its going to piss off alot of people.

Wake me up when they quit being a half-assed open source company. A good Exchange/Outlook killer for *nix has been needed for quite awhile, and these guys pretty much have it covered. Hula was getting there, but Novell pulled the plug on it shortly after they got in bed with MS. Horde is getting there, but its calendar and mobile syncing leave much to be desired (for now). Kolab and OpenExchange both have a long way to go, IMHO.
If I'm going to have to pay for a collaboration server, why the ***** would I go with these guys, and not just buy Exchange, which we all know works at least most of the time? Looking at it from a (smaller) business perspective, Outlook/Exchange is more expensive, but your employees are already familiar with it, Admins actually exist that know it, and theres a healthy amount of competition among them so you don't have to pay as much for outsourced support compared to a good *nix admin.
If they open up the whole thing - branding, themes, blackberry support and all, then sell support contracts, I don't see why they wouldn't get tons of business, especially since they're pretty new on the scene, and there aren't that many experienced admins out there to support it on their own. - GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Every step towards increasing competition is good, but of all the people I know with Comcast internet services, only one of them actually uses the comcast.net email address they provide.
It's a good gesture, but I'm just not confident that this will really increase the use of Zimbra. - orthodoxDrew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4i hate running special software just to check my email.
- lostknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ZImbra supports IMAP, and if you noted, it also includes non-comcast accounts (which are aggregated via IMAP and other systems). The connection between the server and client is via SOAP and JSON, so it's easy to get at the data that way as well.
- yoursh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2As a current Comcast customer and former employee, I could care less until Comcast e-mail supports IMAP.
- rdjurovich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow, i want that template/theme for my Zimbra! :D
I wonder how this will affect Zimbra's future in terms of product development... - Unlegend, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It looks great! However, as a Comcast subscriber, I say they still owe me for the hours of my life I spent "troubleshooting" with them that I'll never get back u_u...
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4A corporate shill if I ever seen one.
...not I wouldn't do the same if my company was ever in the news. I want to remain employed, don't I?
This guy's account seems to be used solely for whoring Zimbra out, though. - burnblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The visual voicemail looks great!
BTW, I love how the email's subject is 'admin layout changes _work_stuff_' and the actual email is about a new baby - trogdor8667, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I just forward mine to an IMAP supported host elsewhere. It's annoying as anything, though, because its the only email account I use that doesn't support IMAP.
- GamingInstinct, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Consider me converted!
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1what's the "non-special" software?
- jattsrus, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4Great!!!... I'm switching back to Comcast!
