- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damn I am moving out of Comcast area. I know a lot of people have had problems with Comcast, but I have had excellent HD PVR and *real* 8 Mbps cable with them - I guess I am one of the lucky ones.
I am psyched they are going with TiVo, but to tell you the truth, their current dual-tuner Motorola HD PVR is actually really good. The ability to record multiple HD and SD programs simultaneously with no re-encoding pretty much has left my TiVo collecting dust. It also has other cool features like PIP the current program while viewing the well-designed program guide, which requires no channel configuration, network adapter or phone line. You can also see information on shows in the program guide without clicking through to an 'info' page.
A merger of these features with TiVo could be really great - I just hope TiVo doesnt ignore some of the surprisingly cool features the Motorola has. TiVo was the most incredible version 1.0 product I had ever used ( I have had one since before they were released for review ), and I have purchased about 7 for myself, family and friends.
However, most of what TiVo has done past version 1.0 was implemented a day late and a dollar short. Their biggest fumble was releasing series 2 WAY before they told people what HMO would actually DO, and then when HMO came out they implemented it in 802.11b over USB 1.1 requiring your to buy add-on HMO, plus add-on network adapters for each unit, and the speed was so slow that show sharing, the coolest feature, was virtually unusable unless you had CAT 5 between rooms. Over the years they made virtually no effort to upgrade to 802.11g/USB 2.0.
So, personally I think the entire Series 2 line was a sham to force people to buy new hardware. - vitriolage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think currently Comcast has a deal with NESN as the sole provider of NESN HD, though I don't know for sure because they don't even have a NESN HD channel, they just broadcast the game through their INHD channel. I don't really get it all but I'm really disappointed with Comcast's lack of ESPN2 HD, hopefully they'll show some of the ESPN2 World Cup matches through INHD or even through ABC/ESPN HD. Though I am going to try to get this Beta TiVo working on my box if these rumors are true.
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would definitely like to try this. I have the Comcast HD DVD right now. While it is ok, there are really not many features that go with it, it really leaves a lot to be desired.
- Barmat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm moving soon and might look for a house were I cann't get Directv so I can break my contract and go with Comcast. Tivo is that good. I hate the new DVR's Directv is using. Directv screwed themselves by dumping Tivo.
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking if it would be worth the $ to get TiVo over my Comcast DVR. It's the most buggy piece of hardware/software I've ever seen. It has two tuners, but sometimes decides that it can only record one thing at a time, and not let me change the channel! Forget trying to record two shows at once, that only works once in a blue moon...
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This would be huge. The Tivo layout and function, albeit painfully slow at times, is the easiest and most intuitive out there. I have DTV right now, but would switch to comcast if they released this. DTV lacks in the channel offerings, especially in the HD department. No NESN HD!?!
Chip- - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You clearly don't realize that the average real world user still doesn't have an HD tv.
- NX2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the Time Warner HD DVR, made by Scientific Atlanta. I had to get it, my Series 2 Tivo would not pass through the HD at all. I hate the Time Warner DVR with a purple passion. I has no features, and I can't even seem to make it start playing a new program that it is halfway through recording.
- sword1781, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree, the current HD DVR from COMCAST gets the job done but that's about it. I frequently have trouble while trying to record a series or if a ballgame runs late.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're not talking about the average real world user, we're talking about Comcast subscribers who already have or are interested in HD content.
- gjlp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You clearly don't have a clue about the average real world user who wants an easy, intuitive tv viewing experience - i.e using TiVo on a TV connected DVR rather than a piece of totally non-intuitive software that runs on a PC. The software you refer to might satisfy a very small minority of TV viewers but you can't seriously believe it would meet the needs of most folks, even if it is free.
- djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya know, I have cox, and they have all of that
the downloading isnt supported, really, but its there, and there is an input, but no way to access it.........Not sure if having tivo would be a good thing, never had it..... - FreydNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Current Series2 Tivos will download video blogs (like Rocket Boom, etc) and play them on your TV. Downloadable content isn't that crazy. I don't think you will see torrent abilities any time soon, but that is what a HTPC is for ;-)
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They actually listened when most people wanted a dual tuner so maybe some of your ideas, redwoodtree, aren't that far off. I can definately see the benefits of an upgradeable conviently hard drive but isn't that already possible in the 'break open your tivo' world?
- theodd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The current Comcast DVR is wonky as hell. It's just sad. It couldn't be any less intuitive. I've been looking for a cost effective alternative for a long time but the fact is, it can record HD so there aren't a lot of options out there. HD TiVo through Comcast should be a huge improvement but I'm not holding my breath. Comcast has a way of screwing up anything they touch.
- redwoodtree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The current microsost based software on Comcast's HD DVR is extremely buggy and unintuitive. If you turn it off for long periods of time it will lose your recordings and this is a bug they have never addressed. The box is slow and randoml stops responding. There's just nothing good about it except the dual tuner. The ideal box would be:
1) HDTV
2) Dual Tuner
3) Upgradeable hard drive
4) Ability to download shows
5) Multiple outputs and inputs - kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@NX 200 - I have the identical unit and love it. Maybe this is just because its my first DVR and just assumed that something from the cable company would suck, but I've been really impressed by it. Oh, to watch something that if half-way through recording, hit "list", scroll to the program that is recording, hit "select", then scroll to "play from beginning" and hit "select" again.
- kenelbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it won't let you change channels while you are recording, that means you are viewing the tuner that is currently recording. Try hitting the "swap" button on your Comcast remote sometime to switch to the other tuner. I have the Comcast DVR, and for all its shortcomings, this is not a problem for me. I record two channels at once on a regular basis also.
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm.... Microsoft software buggy. How odd. :)
- themamboman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The Cisco/Scientific-Atlanta HD DVR box has been working for almost 2 years now. Glad to see that TiVo is finally catching up :)
Now, Cisco/S-A has something even better coming out (actually working in the labs already, about to be deployed): HD DVR and DVD recording all built in. Take that Motorola and TiVo!

I agree with Carguy84, It might be slow sometimes...But that is the cost For High-Definition TiVo? Who cares about it being slow! It is just to exciting!
- MrKoopa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Yes, i do like the carro frosen
- kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3digg down - posted in wrong thread.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+0Sometimes you diggers act just like a bunch of diggers!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2Who needs tivo when you can use something free like absORB http://briandailey.googlepages.com/absorb
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -29/+2Thats pretty cold, my comment got dugg down for suggesting a cool program.
