- Jazzzzz, on 01/05/2009, -1/+178Just in time for them to block netflix instant watchers.
- BlindingDawn, on 01/05/2009, -2/+90How many different ways is Comcast going to try to split this hair.
- flowingsphere, on 01/05/2009, -3/+82Here's an idea Comcast, get more equipment and stop being cheap.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 01/05/2009, -5/+75Can't wait for a real ISP to come along. A real ISP that provides real Internet, not this cluttered nonsense we have now.
-NO port blocking whatsoever (so we can host servers)
-NO bandwidth caps (speed caps - OK, total transfer caps - NOT OK)
-NO service blocking or monitoring
-NO tracking, logging, or otherwise spying on customers, for whatever reason
-NO targeted advertising
-One flat monthly cost, determined by what speed you want
That's what a real ISP is. Comcast isn't that. As far as I'm concerned, FiOS isn't either, they block ports (or so I've heard) and I host servers (game servers, personal FTP, VNC remote access, etc). I have Charter and they're OK thus far, the speed isn't super awesome but I can host servers, use BitTorrent, and download constantly without issue. They had that little advertising/tracking issue a few months ago but it seems to have gone away. If they start pulling lame moves, I will be sure to ditch them and find a different ISP. - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -11/+75I pefer this as opposed to either cutting me off or charging me per gig transfer.
- BrettFromTibet, on 01/05/2009, -1/+62When is neutral, truly-high speed, first-world coming to the USA?
When!?!?!? - Memnochxx, on 01/05/2009, -6/+64What about providing you with what they've advertised?
- magic6435, on 01/06/2009, -6/+48I'm not a hog for trying to use the the ***** i pay for.
- socivitus, on 01/05/2009, -2/+42As long as they're ***** everyone and not discriminating, it's all good!
- haydesigner, on 01/06/2009, -1/+40Missing the point, are we?
- Zervaman, on 01/06/2009, -7/+41***** Comcast!
- Wargala, on 01/06/2009, -2/+36Why not do both!?!? I got rid of Comcast after that "250 gig limit" *****. Speak with your wallet, and they notice. When I canceled, they did everything they could to keep me. When I told them I don't like limits, they had the nerve to tell me they've been doing it for a while.
My reply?
I don't like being lied to about my service, and I don't like limits. Cancel me. - shandromand, on 01/06/2009, -0/+31FiOS is better anyway. Assuming Verizon doesn't set fire to your house installing it.
- Cararan, on 01/05/2009, -1/+31I was wondering why my internet speed seem lower.. Damn comcast can't wait for Fios.
- Memnochxx, on 01/05/2009, -5/+31So their solution to make the internet faster is to make it slower?
- Thomasaka, on 01/06/2009, -4/+29No. It would be understandable for them to upgrade their out of date hardware that prevents them from providing the bandwidth that their customers demand, and more importantly, are already paying for.
- maloventevil, on 01/06/2009, -3/+27So let me get this straight... I can pay $60 a month for a service, and if I use what I pay for, I am labeled a hog and am then throttled?
Win. - kutsal, on 01/06/2009, -0/+23<s>Why should anyone use anything other than Comcast's own video-on-demand service anyway?...</s>
- Whackly, on 01/06/2009, -4/+27Didn't you notice the tiny "Up to" before the speed claims?
- marm0lade, on 01/06/2009, -2/+25Pay for it? Users in Japan are currently enjoying GIGABIT fiber (no I did not spell that wrong. gigabit.) for $56/month.
http://www.japantoday.com/category/technology/view ...
Paying for it, and getting ass raped, are two different things. The telcos choose the former. We are more than ready to "pay" for it. - soopafly, on 01/05/2009, -3/+24Been waiting for Verizon since forever... Can't wait to give Comcast the boot!!
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+22I have a feeling they have this enabled for me now. It took 22 minutes to navigate a website this weekend to order a pizza in for movie night. No joke, I thought it was the pizza place at first until I tried surfing a few other places and realized EVERYTHING was hideously slow.
This, coupled with the recent revelation that Comcast users will HAVE to rent a decoder box starting next month for the extended basic lineup (channels 14-99, which so conveniently renders my TiVO useless) have me contemplating a life completely without Comcast.
And I concur, ***** COMCAST. Second worst customer experience I've ever had. - 3Den, on 01/05/2009, -2/+21When consumers demand it and are willing to pay for it.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/06/2009, -3/+22This is hilarious. Basically, they're penalizing the only people across the system that are using it as it's supposed to be used rather than expanding it for the future.
Just because the general internet population only uses it to check Myspace and their email doesn't mean that the people using more bandwidth are doing something wrong. - N3M3515, on 01/06/2009, -1/+19Seriously WTF is the point of having broadband if you cant use it?
- centran, on 01/06/2009, -0/+16FiOS has a similar benefit to DSL in that is is hard to overload. One person has their own connection all the way to the central office. When you do "overload" it the reason is usually at the central office or higher. This makes it easy to upgrade the network to handle the load.
When cable gets overloaded it is a bit trickier becuase a group of people are sharing the same connection to the headend. This means the cable company needs to split up the groups. - CalcProgrammer1, on 01/06/2009, -4/+18The problem is they're marketing the highest possible speed as what you are paying for. They need to market the average or lowest speed, if I'm paying for 10Mbps connection but I can only hit 10Mbps when all my neighbors are on vacation and have their routers off, then I'm not getting what I paid for.
- jdpiehl, on 01/06/2009, -2/+15Comcast is evil. They have a ton of money to update their system, but they don't. If you have the option to use someone other than Comcast then do it. You'll thank me when you do. I switched to AT&T U-verse for my Internet and TV...tons better!!!
- protogenes, on 01/06/2009, -0/+13Same thing happened in Canada with Bell. Bell won.
You guys are screwed. - Benno, on 01/06/2009, -2/+15http://www.newnetworks.com/BroadbandScandalIntro.h ...
@3Den We already paid for it. - Jordan777, on 01/06/2009, -2/+14Up to does not mean 10. It means anything from nothing to 10.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/06/2009, -0/+12I wouldn't trust a company that can't spell its own name.
- Ne007, on 01/06/2009, -3/+15Once there is an alternative don't buy Comcast ever again.
Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me.
Just like blockbuster screwed me over.....I say something bad about them whenever I can. And Sprint....MAN they screwed me over when they had a monopoly! NEVER EVER again will I get Sprint anything! - markmole, on 01/06/2009, -4/+16"The solution is to slow it down for those who are being excessive and it's those excessive users who are making it slower for everyone else."
That is ridiculous! "We're sorry, but you're using our service too much!" It's like cutting off your phone service because you make too many phone calls, or disconnecting your cable because you watch too much TV. Or 86ing you from the local movie theatre, because you watch too many movies. It's totally absurd. Comcast is making it more and more difficult for people to access their own competition (i.e., iTunes, Netflix on demand, etc.) for obvious reasons. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+13Please define "times of congestion", how they will let the user know? How will THEY define congestion.
Yeah, lets trust them! Uh huh!
They can now claim "congestion" at will and no one will be any wiser..........Then they should throttle their bill during this time.
Time to assault with a full class action suit. - SleepParalysis, on 01/06/2009, -0/+11Comcast blocks ports? Cause I can host HTTP, FTP, etc. with absolutely no problems. In fact I've never had an issue with this.
I agree with you on logging, it would be very nice to get an ISP that does not do this, although I don't see it happening. They have other reasons to log specific traffic other than for the government I'm sure.
Also, Comcast does have one flat monthly cost, determined by the speed you want. Right now it's like 58ish for their standard 16mbps and it goes up from there, you can see the list on their website. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+11Luckily, I get my internet via Fiber, plugged directly into Al Gore's ass.
I get 25 Terabytes, Down and 1.21 Gigawatts, Up. Yes, that's right, 1.21 Gigawatts upstream.
When it comes to sending things up Al Gore's ass, the only throttle, is full throttle.
Suck my balls, Comcast. - alexforcefive, on 01/06/2009, -3/+13megaton, your arguments would be understandable for (for example) a cash-strapped government service (i.e. NHS waiting lists), but for a commercial service that people have already paid for? If they can't provide it, they shouldn't sell it.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -3/+13As much as I hate Comcasts policies, their upload speeds are FAR faster than Qwests misleading fiber service. That and Qwest had a habbit of never verifying who I was the last few times I called. Last 4 digits of my SSN? Full name? Full mailing address? Permission to access my account? These are all things they need to ask before proceeding, some of which are required by state law.
- shandromand, on 01/06/2009, -4/+14WTF, you couldn't CALL the pizza place?
- tehchicken, on 01/06/2009, -1/+11They don't need to charge everyone more they are/were supposed to be upgrading their equipment anyhow.
- megaton, on 01/06/2009, -10/+20Maybe I'm just an old fogy, but this seems like an understandable compromise. During times of congestion, it is perfectly reasonable to want to normalize the traffic for *all* parties involved, not just you and your 1080p torrent streams.
Now, if this is on TOP of a 250gb limit, that's just retarded. - Briandrews15, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10That is the general demand by the consumer. However today, big business is able to manipulate demand because they are the only ones with supply capabilities. Classic laws of supply/demand show that we the public are demanding more speed, but they don't want to invest in hardware/backbones so they reorganize what they have and market it as innovation.
You wonder why the USA has the most broadband users but we are ranked around #15 in internet penetration (bandwidth usage)? It's because all that money you are paying for broadband is filling pockets rather than innovating. - mcnees287, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10Comcast is such a ***** company. Bunch of cheap bastards.
I dream of the day i can get verizon - archer75, on 01/06/2009, -3/+12Most highspeed ISP's have limits. Most do not tell you and don't publish them.
- xptoast, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10Don't know but this is going to piss off online gamers on xbox live as well as sonys online system. Way to piss off your customers Comcast. Way to go....NOT!!!! Piss off already and give us the service we pay for.
- tehchicken, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10WOW!
- N3M3515, on 01/06/2009, -1/+9Its all Porn Brother! its all porn.
- N3M3515, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8well, lets see.. in my neighborhood I can go with Qwest or Comcast. Qwest is ADSL from a DSLAM which is multiplexed to gawd awful hell, I give em props they can run 30+ users off of one T1 and have only 70-80ms RTT @1.5mb. Or you can go with Comcast the Nazi's of the internet with thier bullsh*t monitoring and gawd awful appliances in their core, but have less latency and higher top end 12mb currently around 40-50ms RTT. Being an avid gamer I choose less latency.
