- cslawren, on 06/11/2009, -0/+17This is great news. I'm in my 20s and not really in the range for colonoscopy exams yet, but I'm really pulling for a colonoscopy free exam procedure for diagnosis. Not saying I would pull a Peter Griffin in the doctor's office, but I definitely want to avoid that pain/total discomfort if I can/if technology permits me.
- keysmachine, on 06/12/2009, -0/+15finally my dream of having computer chips shoved up my ass has been realized.
- DrJen, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6FTA: In addition to the lab-on-a-chip technology, Vernick and his fellow researchers believe they are well on the way to establishing a blood test for colon cancer, which, when used together with colonoscopies, offers a comprehensive package of colon cancer detection.
- chesscat, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6It's good to have goals.
- foxtrot3, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4Any advance in cancer detection is good news.
- dtfinch, on 06/12/2009, -0/+43x2" chip goes where?
- Zarchon, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3I was given 3 years to live in 2001. Still here although chemo was a bitch.
- timrob, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4RTFA, you still need a colonoscopy, i.e. a gastroenterologist will still be needed (unless you want to do your own). You saw the single payer health care and wanted to nit-pick and forgot to read the article to back up your point.
- Pinkertinkle, on 06/12/2009, -4/+6If it's cheaper than a colonoscopy insurance will certainly pay for it cuz it'll save them money vs paying a gastroenterologist. Quit with your knee jerk single payer health care agenda crap.
- Drizzit, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3They constantly get out of these things by labeling them as "Experimental".. Some of these procedures are 10+ years old and are common overseas just not here.
- Pinkertinkle, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2dont believe it until its proven to improve outcomes in a randomized clinical trial.
- ChromaVita, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2The doctor will just RAM it in there.
- seltaeb4, on 06/11/2009, -8/+10Not if you don't have health insurance. And probably not even if you do, as what Health Insurance Corporation will approve the expenditure?
Yes to Doctors, Yes to Nurses, Yes to Patients, No to Health Insurance Corporations.
Universal, Single-Payer Health Care Now. - LucidHawk, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2*Diggs up because doesn't want to be stuck in a doctors office 5 years from now with a doctor wanting to give me a colonoscopy when there is ANY other option*
- duffduffxx, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2I am also in my 20's and have had multiple colonoscopies (my dad had colon cancer when he was 21 so I am at high risk).
The actual procedure is not bad at all. I don't go to the hospital, I go to a specialized clinic that does 50 a day. I go in, get a little anesthesia, and it seems like it is over in seconds. I don't even feel the pollup removal (but I do bleed out of my ass a bit). I'm not groggy afterwards whatsoever.
All of these alternative methods are cool, but if you do have a pollup, you need to get the traditional colonoscopy anyway. I tried the virtual imaging technique and sure enough I had a pollup and had to get a colonoscopy anyway.
The part that does suck is the cleaning of your system which you have to do with all of these procedures anyway. You drink this AWFUL liquid (it tastes like salty flat sprite) and you can't eat anything until its over.
So just stick with the real things, I hate needles and all things medical and even I dont think its that bad.... - Pinkertinkle, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1link to this study please
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1"With his tool, Vernick can scan up to four different biomarkers"
huh huh huhhh you thed - c0mputar, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Saw this technology on TED talks. Nice to see that it has passed the development stage.
- KokomoNYC, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1w00t genomics technologies.
- hazard99, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Fake time sucks
- sulthernao, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1It's probably already been through a double blind study.
- nashio, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0not painful, but very uncomfortable
- maliath, on 06/12/2009, -2/+2Wutever who needs this?? Natural colon cleansing will make sure u never get cancer anyway!
/s - skabyss, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1I had to bury you so I didnt go retarded trying to understand your comment
- aguenter, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0Is it just me or does that chip look ***** huge? I thought this was supposed to be less painful/invasive.
- beset, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1coltrane68 - that's the theory, but i'm assuming you've never had one. I've crohns and have had 2 and trust me, both were extremely painful. It's not the biopsy that hurts, that's just a strange pulling sensation, it's getting the camera and tools to the spot. Blowing air into an inflamed colon is more painful than you could imagine.
- zachstanley, on 06/15/2009, -0/+0C'mon... Colon cancer! Get it? har har...
:( - grimacebrown, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0I hope my colon RT's me on Twitter when it gets cancer...
- coltrane68, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Endoscopic biopsies are not at all painful. The inside of the intestines does not have somatic nerves.
- Pinkertinkle, on 06/12/2009, -2/+1No one gives a ***** about the first part of the article cause the only thing it cuts off is a 7 day wait for pathology. My comment is clearly directed at the latter part of the article referring to a blood test for colon cancer, which could obviously reduce the need for screening colonoscopies.
Stop projecting your own need to nitpick due to your bias towards single payer healthcare onto me. - slashdotordigg, on 06/12/2009, -2/+1(CUD: see your doctor)
Do you butt sex?
Yes--> Do you use enema more than 5 times a week?
Yes --> CUD
No --> Are you constipated often? --> Yes --> CUD
--> No --> Do you still like gay *****? --> yes-->CUD
--> no --> You are colon!! oh wait you are clean! - dbossnirvana, on 06/12/2009, -2/+0"We're now entering your poopholesys and... oh! You got 20 days to live."
- renatoc8, on 06/12/2009, -3/+0"Now we're gona do this in real time..." -Vince Shlomi, ShamWow
- innovati, on 06/12/2009, -5/+1while this is GREAT news if the guy test negative, this doesn't allow proper time for a doctor to prepare or the patient to prepare if the results are positive.
Sometimes instant is just too fast, especially with bad news. - zachstanley, on 06/12/2009, -3/+0::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- DrJen, on 06/11/2009, -7/+2Do you really think that there's going to be money for these extra tests? If the private sector doesn't want to pay for it you can bet that the government will follow suit.
- spookyttws, on 06/12/2009, -6/+1"And, wait for it....wait for it....You have Colon Cancer! I'm sorry you'll be dead within 2 years."
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -6/+1Colon cancer is for losers. Cant we use these computer chips for Mac users?
