- wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -0/+6so, howmany of us are reading this article while at work?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He wasn't fired. He resigned on Nov. 20th and someone complained about taxpayers dollars being wasted on Dec 27th. If he got his work done on time and did a good job then who the hell cares?
Not dugg. - rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He was completing the work assigned to him and still had time to post that much? Wow. I wish I had a job like that. Either way, sounds like he got turned in by a bunch of sour-grapers who were simply jealous of all the free time he had while at work. ;-)
- Alank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, I can understand getting fired for that, truly.
On the other hand, I hope the busybody tattletales that ratted him out (just for the sake of doing it) feel the eyes of others on them next time they're goofing off at work. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Good job, he's an idiot for wasting so much time."
Mmmm. Irony. - chaosbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"So in a 4 week month, of 40 hour weeks, that equals 9600 minutes x 2 months = 19,200
So the guy was posting once a minute? I don't think so..."
believe it, I've know a kid who's posted 500 times in a forum on one day, and all posts were at least a sentance long - olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2vermin, if you completed everything you were assigned to do, what would you do at work then?
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For one, he didn't get fired, he retired, for two I might understand getting fired over 6,000 posts in 2 months IF you weren't doing your work, however, his supervisors say he not only finished all his work, but only had exemplary things to say about him. So what the hell do you care? Hell, I bet a good chunk of your office/work center doesn't get all their work done 4 out of 5 days of the week. You paid for it? Yeah, you paid for his work, WHICH HE DID.
You've never gotten let out of work early because you finished what you're supposed to? Either you have one of those burger flippin' jobs or your boss is an ass. Not all jobs ALWAYS have something for you to do.
Now another another note, he would have had to post about 18 times an hour if he worked a normal 8 hour shift everyday taking into account he got weekends off (6000 / ((8 hours x 40 days) = 320 hours)) = 18.x hours. In accordance with the grammer he used, the length of his example post, and the fact he's trying to be a woman (we all know they talk!), I'd call *****. Writing a post takes way too long for that. And the 19K hits on the site were probably hits from the WHOLE COMPANY. Otherwise you'd be doing nothing but refreshing a page (19000 / 320) = ~60 refreshes per hour, 1 a minute. He wouldn't have been able to complete all his work, take a break, or even go the the bathroom with that type of schedule.
Considering web hits to most sites are minimal, especially after the first visit, I would imagine his bandwidth is negligible too. Overall, sounds like a goody-two-shoes wants a promotion in marketing :p - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think the numbers are quite exaggerated, but if he was completing his work then who the ***** cares
- turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If he was getting all his work done, I'm not sure what the problem is. Either give him more work to do, or cut his time spent in the office so he can do his posting at home.
Your tax dollars are not being "wasted" on a government worker getting, what, $80K a year? They are being wasted on corporate welfare schemes in the billions of dollars, in corporate tax breaks and in uninvestigated tax-related dodgy-pullings by the wealthy. - jcalvey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The posting as sassy sarah is not a reason to get persecuted. I think more people should be able to mind their own business.
a. Work assigned: Completed.
b. Bothered anyone: Nope.
c. Violated acceptable use policy: Unknown. - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you see the example post they used? It was around 3 paragraphs, not 3 sentences, and most "kids" on the internet these days take "r u goin 2 B l8 4 dinner?" as a sentence so, no I don't buy the 6000 post in 2 months.
As far as it works in most companies I know, the internet policies are in place to make sure employees don't screw off all day, or at least try to curb it. If he's doing all his work, it's not illegal, and he even gets good employee ratings, exactly what would have been the point of firing him? (despite the fact he resigned)
I know MANY more people who are on what I like to call "the endless smoke break" and don't get nearly as much done as the others who might break for a bit to surf a few blogs. And of course I can't forget our 2 hour lunchtime people, or the people who do nothing but ***** all day. Yeah, the internet is a REAL big timewaster.../sarcasm - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares? He got his work done on time. Why fire him?
I'm sure there's something else going on. - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More importantly, they should question why "he" (in bold) was posting as "Sassy Sarah".
- screenpass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was #2 in my company of 100 for surfing, aaaannnnnnd
as long as i get my work done, there is no issue. I still have a job and the #1 guy had a number that was so high it was close to impossible to have been completed in a normal 40hr work week.
now posting as a woman, now that is grounds for banning his Internet access - jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did the submitter even read the entire story? if so then they would have noticed taht the person in question resigned from the job near the end of november and wasn't fired.
- Pas3n7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://sportswrath.com/index.php?showtopic=7942
looks like Sassy_Sarah was baninated, they discuss it on their forum here:
http://sportswrath.com/index.php?showtopic=8128 - DaBigWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So in a 4 week month, of 40 hour weeks, that equals 9600 minutes x 2 months = 19,200
So the guy was posting once a minute? I don't think so... - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Who cares? He got his work done on time. Why fire him?"
Exactly. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not all jobs entail constant work. Some people's jobs (like mine) are a mixture of alternating high workload and low workload. I'm always available to do any and all work when the need arises, but sometimes there just isn't anything that needs to be done. Does that mean I'm a terrible employee? Of course not! It's just the nature of my job.
- slackerhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So the guy was posting once a minute? I don't think so..."
believe it, I've know a kid who's posted 500 times in a forum on one day, and all posts were at least a sentance long
"
Yes but this guy still managed to get his work done
He would have had to post once a minuet for his ENTIRE work day ... no breaks for work no breaks for lunch no breaks for anything
He may have been a heavy user but not that heavy - sumdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If he got his work done, what the hell does it matter? He wasn't downloading torrents or mp3s or programming viruses for mass distribution or using the company servers to host a porn site. Geeze. If you give him more work and his Internet usage starts interfering with his workload, then confront him. If he's visiting porn sites or downloading Comet Cursor, yea that's grounds for having a stern talking to but just posting on a board?
- vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah i use remote desktop with my machine at home to get around these reports. I don't do anything note worthy while at work (read digg browse blogs stuff like that) but I don't wany my employer knowing everything i do. And yes i posted this while at work....but over RDC ;-)
- phunlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. I might be in trouble.....
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with others. The issue is not posting at work. The issue is he was posting as "Sassy Sarah"
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I were him I'd sue the hell out of the city just to screw them out of some money.
If one of my employees did his weork on time, everytime, I'd have absolutly no problem with him spending time on the internet to relax or take a break to think of a solution. - Duilen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good for the city! People shouldn't be spending tax payers money surfing the web. The only thing I could see worse than this is if he spent that time in the arm pit of the internet. (chat rooms)
Now I could see if he was using free time to help further his engineering skills through a forum but this obviously wasn't the case. - jlbraun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You use Websense? What a waste of money. I don't use it at the company I own now, and as we grow I refuse to use it. Hire good employees, value them, and you don't have to use things like Websense.
- arznek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing like the poor work ethic of an idiot reflecting on graduates of the University of Toledo. This is irritating to me since I'm graduating from UT this summer...
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I go to college in Toledo :)
- zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if he doesn't have that much work to do then they don't need him there at all! that's my tax dollars being waisted... vote for smaller governments peoples!
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02 hr lunch break wow that would be nice.... I remember when I worked at omax and I only got a 30 minute lunch break and if I spent like an extra 5-15 minutes that I rarely did I'd get remarks from my supervisors like "So your taking a power lunch break?" Honestly that pisses me off, I mean for one I can't even go anywhere to eat a normal lunch and second I don't take any other breaks ever during the whole day, so if I want to spend an extra 15 minutes it should be my damn choice.
However I know work elsewhere and I finally have a good ole 1 hour lunch break, it really helps to let you unwind when you don't have to be constantly watching the clock. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm ok he doesn't want people to know who he is by using the name "Sassy Sarah" yet he gives enough details to get him fired. Really though the people that turned him in had no right to do so and need to get a life. I mean when your job is in Ohio and you get fired because of someone living in Tennessee you know something is wrong with that guy in Tennessee to have the time or inclination to do such an idiotic thing.
"Mike Brubaker, a resident of Tennessee who tipped off the city about Sassy Sarah, said his son brought the Sassy Sarah e-mails to his attention.
"My son comes to me and says, 'This person works for the city of Toledo,'" said Mr. Brubaker. "He said, 'Are you allowed to look at sports Web sites while you're at work?' " - chaosbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"b. Bothered anyone: Nope."
tell that to the people on sportswrath who used to hit on him
"Yes but this guy still managed to get his work done
He would have had to post once a minuet for his ENTIRE work day ... no breaks for work no breaks for lunch no breaks for anything"
true, the kid I know flunked Java - towsonu2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from TFA: "City of Toledo officials say Scott Leo got his engineering work done on time, so they paid little attention to exactly what he was doing on the computer."
he was doing his job... - gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"surely disclosing his internet habbits (especially in such complete detail) is a breach of his privacy. he may have been using his work computers, but even so he should have some expectation of privacy. specially if he was doing it in his breaks.
posted by OmegaOne"
No... He really shouldn't expect any privacy whatsoever. I'm sure he signed a computer-usage form before taking the job - he shouldn't expect anything else other than the absence of privacy. - pyrolyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh man. how many times have i been to digg in the last 2 months?
- potential, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He did his job. there was no reason for him to get fired. what a stupid story, no digg
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a feeling that if he wasn't a guy posting as a "Sassy Sarah," and instead was posting as, say, BengalFan666, this would be a whole lot less "newsworthy." This whole thing is a joke.
He got his job done in a satisfactory fashion (which I'm going to assume is more than can be said for many of his co-workers), which is what he was hired to do, and his online access certainly wasn't restricted, so I don't see how this is even an issue. - TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So some busy-body is getting all hot and bothered by an ex-employee (or ex-contractor) of a city government. First thing to remember about most government jobs - lack of privacy. Unless you are in a security position, everything done digitally/electronically is logged, archived and somewhat accessible to the general public. Second, there are frequent management reviews of Internet/web/email communications. Management can discipline/fire an employee for Internet abuse (although rare), usually they address the abuse to the employee and put a local filter on the sites being accessed (no digg, slashdot, cnn, etc. for >you
- HiJinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just sour grapes is all this is. Maybe some lamer hitting on "Sassy Sarah" and got bent when "she" wouldn't cyber with him. Who's the bigger idiot? The guy posing as a female or the guys thinking they are females?
- camelflage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is kind of a ridiculous story all around. i mean who cares, people get fired for computer misuse all the time over silly crap like this.
...also im at work right now :p - chabuhi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's called "initiative", people. If you have enough time to be posting to forums while at work, then you don't have enough work to do, and that's not necessarily the fault of your supervisor.
- nesibus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares, everyone slacks at work, and the people that told on him...need their ass beat to *****, grow the hell up. I'm sure the lazy piece of crap who told on him Mike *****, is a lazy piece of ***** himself.
I spend at least 2hrs on the net at my job :p But thats cause its a plant...and we all just sit around anyway. Course i surf the web through a proxy...always. Damn filters. :p - maxdefcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Blade does suck, I also live in Toledo!
- DrRo183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hah, dugg for its hilarity.
Com'on people. I've seen/heard worst. Remember that fake clip on ebaum's world of lindsey lohan gossipping? It was so low that you would raise the volume really high to listen...some idiot did it at work. Way to go, jackass. Also heard stories of people being caught downloading |> 0 R ||. What's wrong with people nowadays? Not gettin any outside of work? Too crowded at home to take care is business? If I were him, I'd totally screw the tattles. Download some really freaky stuff to play really loud...like techno, at 9am. - TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm. Cut me off there. Oh, well. Back to Slashdot...
- Stryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
>"b. Bothered anyone: Nope."

>tell that to the people on sportswrath who used to hit on him
muahahah! there are no chicks on the net. just more proof. - tupacisdead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am from Sportswrath, and I knew Sassy_Sarah before Sportswrath. There are a lot of inaccuracies with the reporter's story.
1. Sassy's post count was carried over from Giants.com messageboard where most Sportswrath users came from. He/she did not have 6000+ posts at Sportswrath.
2. The snitch (Mr. Brubaker) mentioned in the article was in fact a member of Sportswrath who was reprimanded for making racist comments. After being reprimanded he vowed to get Sportswrath shut down. Sassy was one of the moderators who had given Mr. Brubaker a warning for his comments and thus became a target for him. Since Sassy often openly talked about working for the city of Toledo, it was easy for him to find the right office to drop the tip. Although Mr. Brubaker's son was also a member of Sportswrath, he had nothing to do with what transpired.
3. The real story here is: Mr Brubaker is a manager in training for a nuclear plant in the Tennessee Valley, and the guy is nucking futs. We all know what he did to Sassy out of spite alone, and he has done more disturbing things to some of our other members. All because he was reprimanded for making a racist comment. -
