- phord, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12I am a Cisco employee and I am teleworking right now.
This morning I rebuilt some code for the factory in China, installed it on their machine remotely using VNC, RDP, WinSCP and two Cisco VPN connections, tested it, found a bug, built it again, installed it again, tested it again, sent emails to the factory engineers, answered their quick replies, and sent them info on how to update their other machines.
Pros: I can leave the office without worrying that I forgot to do something (I can do it from home); I can attend those 8am meetings before I've had a shower and breakfast; my desk phone is VOIP, and my laptop has a client/emulator so it rings wherever I am; I can work with our international teams while they're still awake (in China, Europe, wherever).
Cons: I'm never really "away" from the office. For example, today I am on vacation in Lake Placid.
But on the plus side, I got to spend all day Saturday with my family instead of prepping to "finish my critical tasks before my vacation starts".
Flexibility and connectivity is truly a sweet thing. Especially for adult ADD folks like me. Saves the company money, saves me money (on gas), and lets me work the way I want to and when I want to. - MooseOfReason, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9What about danger of tele-traffic-jams?
- MetalHead73, on 06/29/2009, -4/+9I'm taking a Cisco Systems class next year for school.
Sounds cool. - Sihing, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5This is a great idea (I have two jobs, one of which I'm a developer from home). The results may seem skewed because it's all based on the employee's input (i.e. "YEAH I LOVE WERKIN FROM HOMEZ CAUSE IT AFFORDS ME TIME TO BE LAZY AND NOT AROUND ME BOSS!" :: drool :: ) but to be honest, knowing that I was allowed to work from home and that it was endorsed by my boss made me a lot more productive at home. This doesn't mean that it should be done every day... exactly what Cisco is encouraging (2 days out of the week telecommuting, the rest actually showing up at the office). Props to Cisco for being innovative as usual.

- sodade, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3My experience is the opposite of this - I think you are just talking out your ass.
- darkened, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2BREAKING: productive employees especially IT employees enjoy to work from home in their boxers in the privacy of their home office, next up results of scientific study confirming sky is indeed blue.
- deadguysleeps, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2dugg for clearing the road so I could do some speeding
- LadyShiva, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1With teams comprised of people in multiple timezones, why wouldn't companies have permanent telecommuting? I think the people who aren't efficient workers from home are the people who are always on smoke/gossip/tea breaks while in the office; how is it any different where they aren't working?
I clear a heck of a lot more work while in the silence of my own house, versus the cacophony of the office. I am able to concentrate outside of the cube farm. - qtipwax, on 10/10/2009, -0/+1I don't buy this after reading here: http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/45634
- sodade, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1It wasn't free - they had to spend money on the study.
- sodade, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Most white collar workers should not be commuting to an office everyday. Keep these people off the ***** roads is it is not necessary for them to be someplace specific.
Why don't we tax corporations based on how many commuting workers they have? Even better, tax them on the number of miles commuted. That would change their behavior fast. - sodade, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Probably not a good idea to let the digg community know who you work for.
- kinerry, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Telecommunications company promotes telecommunications...and everyone falls for it
- chrystie69, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2Finally a company that GETS the cost effectiveness of Telecommuting!!!
- bgradid, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0Cisco has also claimed that internal video blogging was crucial to their employee productivity, and I really don't buy that one. Is it really surprising that cisco would be claiming that telecommunications is beneficial?
- beabis, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Yes! The Internet is on the verge of collapse.
http://www.networkworld.com/netresources/1118metca ... - gkiltz, on 06/29/2009, -2/+1The business culture has to change! Telecommuting is seen two ways by businesses today. One: A privilege for the select few who have earned it through years of commuting!
Two: A way to micro-manage workers who have always spent most of their time in the field!
Other than those two interpertations, most companies see telecommuting as a way to slack off and not get caught, or as an outright scam!
Cisco may be able to change that within it's own company, but I don't know that anyone will follow their lead! - wentwhere, on 06/29/2009, -3/+2It's great that it saves money, and is probably better for the environment compared to actual commuting, but if everyone works from home it seems that a company is bound to stagnate and the free flow of ideas from person to person will become a lot more difficult to achieve.
Also I don't doubt that there will be some people who, with work no longer bringing them into the daylight, will never leave their homes again. - neofactor, on 06/29/2009, -2/+1It will bring the movie "The NET" to life... no one will know their neighbors... pandemonium will ensue... Morning Drive thrus will need to go door to door like in the "5th Element". Cats and Dogs living together! but I digress.
- EverybodyPanic, on 06/29/2009, -11/+1Cool story, bro.
