- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+185I guess since the print on the coupon read "Circuit City reserves the right to end this promotion at any time"(or something similar to that at least) this is perfectly legal...but lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+99@Araden:
correct spelling is renege, as in renege.
http://www.answers.com/renege - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+93See, he should have waited until AFTER he got his Wii before putting this on Digg!
- Zinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+78Remember that stores like Best Buy will often match competitor coupons. I took the 40 dollar coupon for Circuit City and got 40 bucks off a car stereo system at Best Buy. Even if it's expired at CC, try it at BB.
- jesterselv, on 10/12/2007, -8/+59Yes, I believe canceling this coupon did in fact make Circuit City very happy indeed
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -16/+61It may be legal, but it's certainly going to make people think twice about trusting Circuit City again. If they truly valued their customers, they would make sure they could meet demand before they went public with offers.
- deaks, on 10/12/2007, -19/+59Perfectly legal, but just wait for the onslaught of whining and complaining from everyone who reads this and posts a comment. Commence whining in 3, 2, 1...
- DerProfi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35This would sound better if you used the appropriate word: it's RENEGE not renig.
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32There was a "FatWallet Effect" long before there was a "Digg effect" so don't give too much credit to Digg on stuff like this being taken down. Digg may have the power to take down sites but when it comes to bargain hunting and tech deals then Digg members don't care about deals nearly as much as the fatwallet/slickdeals people.
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34I don't know about you, but i'm tired of companies failing to make good on their offers. Circuit City - if you valued your customers then you should make sure that you can meet demand before you go public with an offer.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24JeffH called it - he was the first with this comment yesterday:
"I can see it now. Digg front page on Sunday:
"Circuit City denying coupon users!!!" with thousands of Diggs, and the comments are filled with Circuit City boycott sites."
Guess CC was even faster than he thought. - rayman901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22yes....
- ttfadia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yeah, I'm glad they apologized for all that convenience they caused.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Are we so conceited that we think CC pulled the coupon cause of Digg?
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22tokyomonster, i don't think she's gonna be paying another 40 bucks, she already spent all the extra money she had buying crotchless panties for our night out this weekend. plus you're a tool because you talk about your gf buying you stuff on digg :)
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15And they went "Wii, Wii, Wii..." all the way home.
- dj961, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@wang
Or they could stop making these kinds of coupons. Fact is some coupons are meant to be released to a limited audience, when they end up on a site like Digg they tend to get pulled. I suspect that as the practice of making these coupons available to the general public continues, companies will smarten up and either exercise a greater control over the release of coupons or they'll simply stop releasing them. - Anand999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm sure Slick Deals, Fat Wallet, etc. etc. had NOTHING to do with it. Digg is small fry compared to the hordes of deal seekers those sites are home to.
- yeahbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The barcodes are considered invalid in the system, so a .pdf link/printout will do you no good buddy. It's dead.
- betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I stopped shopping at Circuit City about 10 years ago because when I went to buy something that was on sale it was always sold out. When I would ask the sales person where the sale item was " we only have couple of those and they are already gone". It's their loss as I have 7 computer system and tons of other electronics. Long live NewEgg !!!
- mtownand1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10the title says after, not because.
- Pulp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Bega
At the Best Buy owned Futureshop (Canada), they honour promotional prices from other stores. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Bastards......
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Right, they were doing such a good job of keeping it a secret.
Basically, they'll still get a surge in traffic this Sunday, either from people trying to see if they can get the discount anyway, or who didn't know about the cancellation. This way, they just don't have to give them a discount.
If they're so new to the retail game that they don't realize that coupons get noticed and used by a lot of people, and that there have been web sites devoted to things just like this for years now, then they need to get some new people working there. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Talk about your weasel language.
"An error in production regarding limitations"-- production of what? limitations of what? I guess they're trying to say they don't have a lot to sell, so they'd rather not give a bargain on any of it.
"We had no choice"-- Right. Gun to their head. No choice. What could poor Circuit City do when faced with an onslaught of customers, all wanting to buy things? It's not physically possible to combine coupons with massive numbers of shoppers, is it?
I would be cooler with it if they could just use honest language.
"We printed this coupon to try and get people in the door on Sunday. Now that everyone has noticed it, and it seems like everyone and his brother actually IS coming in, it has occured to us that we don't really need to give people a coupon to get them in here, after all. Since we're probably going to sell boatloads of electronics even without a discount, we've decided to take back our offer, and just charge you full price for everything. Thanks for getting all excited, though." - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Are you kidding me? Do you really think CC is making $40 on each Wii?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Good customer service = happy customers
Happy customers = repeat business
Repeat business = more money - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Something tells me there were plenty of other low-paid retail grunt jobs at the Carousel Mall for him to get later. It's not like he gave up his position as vice president of marketing or something.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5actually, I thought the same thing about best buy, and went to talk to them. Apparently they match competitor's prices, but no promotional coupons or rebates. Sucks eh?
- yeahbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7So you quit your job b/c they wouldn't let you buy a Wii? You've got to be kidding me.
You must be a teen working for gas money or something?! I just don't see quitting over a Wii as a logical career choice...
Kudos, however, for sticking it to the man. - NipGrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here was the page that got Dugg concerning the offer:
http://www.thewiiexperience.com/get-a-wii-for-209/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you are giving digg too much credit. after about two minutes this coupon made its appearance, it was on slickdeals and fatwallet, which, despite "digg"ers common belief, has leaps and bounds more audience. I think blame goes to these two sites for CC to pull back the coupon offer, not to digg..
- betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bow to the EGG !
- Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I have to play the devil's advocate here and take a small stance with CC. Something you guys have to understand, this is a company in the business of making money. This coupon was probably created with big-ticket sales in mind (tvs, pc's and such). An electronics store makes little to no money on what it mainly sells, this is why it pushes all the accessories because they're more likely to make more money off a Monster Cable than it does the actual t.v. So, when CC realised the amount of money it stands to lose on products that already don't make money they really had no choice but to pull it and i'm sure there will be store managers that will honor the coupon under pressure (read: if it means selling that $2000 plasma). I had foreseen that this would happen. Unlike places like Bed Bath & Beyond where 85% of their inventory carries a 35-50% markup which explains why your mailbox is cluttered with 20% coupons because even a 20% discount on an item that carries a 50% markup, they're still making money off of you. Hope this helps you guys understand where CC is coming from. Yeah, i agree it's pissy move that will inevitably upset customers, but like i said, they're in the business of making money, not customer service.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14I don't think anyone was debating the legality of this. You have to assume there would be some kind of fine print in there. It's just gay.
The real debate here appears to be on the correct spelling of 'renege' - Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3seriously $40 is going to make the difference about whether you camp out for a Wii or not? Somehow I doubt that.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the reason is they *won't* make money on a Wii if you take $40 off. I would hazard a guess that there's no more than $20-$40 profit for the store in a Wii anyway. That's why you don't see stores selling the Wii cheaply - if there was $100 profit in the RRP, you'd naturally expect some stores to charge $50 less in order to get more sales, but that doesn't happen.
That's also why bundles are pushed. They can take less profit on the console itself in a bundle, because they more than make up for it in the other stuff they're selling with it. - AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ROFLance beat me to it. It's weird we thought of the same thing.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@AnotherName
I guess CC has never called your residence (over and over), trying to sell you their $80 warranty for a now year-old DVD player. Never again. - NipGrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone ban this spammer and their IP as a whole? Maybe the subnet for fun?
- boostjunki3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have in the past worked for both CC and BB, trust me when I say that they both suck. Both retailers care little or nothing about how badly they are ripping off their customers (if you've worked retail, then you know what I mean when I point out the retail price vs. employee discount price of things). This just goes to show why I no longer shop at either of these retailers, because of their lack of concern for customer care. ***** 'em, I'll keep my business with Newegg!
- ManHammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ya...they have to honor it, its state law - look it up! Shut up Randy!!
- optimus008, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2CC just lost me as a customer, this isn't the first time the have f-over people.
- NipGrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They added that blurb later, not originally.
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hello, McFly.........Think McFly ..Think
putting offers on very active sites like digg is about the dumbest thing you could possibly do.....the second lamest thing is actually digging the story..
so instead a few folks benefiting you ruin it for everyone....
smooth move genius. - betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah ......so when you go to buy that "on sale hard drive" you better buy a 1000% markup USB cable or into the database you go....
- patw85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3how dare they make money!
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In all fairness, Newegg seems to be slipping a little. It took them THREE WEEKS to replace a defective motherboard. That's a little long to be without a working computer, I'd say.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was going to buy a Wii from Circuit City. Now I won't. I don't know if this impacts CC adversely or not (is their margin less than $40?), but one way or another they lost my business on this product. I'll be going to BB (as much as I hate them) because of the larger number of minimum units.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like a great way to get Best Buy to issue a change to their policy as well, something along the lines of "we will only honor current valid coupons from competitors."
