- publiccomp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48Awesome, I can instantaneously not watch this horrible movie now when its released on DVD.
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I'm not sure than anyone who would actually want to see Tokyo Drift would have the cognitive ability to use a computer in the first place, much less to download the garbage.
- colklink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I think the actual process of burning the DVD, writing on it with the sharpie, and putting it a sleeve would be more exciting than watching this movie.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Heaar that? That's the sound of a million DVD burners not burning that movie.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I'm way more excited about writing on blank DVDs with sharpies and throwing them in paper sleeves yet still paying as much as I would in the store. Sweet deal.
- PhairOh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14This is excellent news for the 4 people who were planning on buying this movie
- Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm stuck in a connundrum. Do I digg this for its awesome concept. Or bury it because it's Tokyo Drift??!?!?! Oh, the mind boggles.
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, zybch, we all known Mark Vincent, aka Vin, only chooses to act in quality pictures!
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7comment of the day
- chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You pay $9.99 for a new release the first day it comes out? When and where?
- JackHererUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Apparently the pseudo DRM that they use on the burned DVDs is horrible and results in lots of coasters and also DVDs that are very susceptible to errors
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/08/02/cinemanows_burntodvd.html - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's about time, Hollywood. Now, let's try it with some good movies.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I wouldn't even download this POS off p2p or torrents, wtf makes them think people are going to actually pay for it. The first fast and furious was bad, the two that came after it are unbearably bad. I have not seen the 3rd one, I am just taking a guess it may actually be worse than the second, not sure if thats even possible?
Note to Hollywood: This movie is the exact reason people d/l movies. Either make a good movie for a change, or keep "losing money" from people d/l'n your ***** movies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Um, Vin had nothing to do with this horendous flick. Just some greedy producers seeking to squeeze some more cash from a dead franchise!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dont they understand?
Just offer the full movie, full quality, no DRM, and at a reasonable price and we WILL BUY THEM.
WTF is so hard to understand about that?
I would MUCH rather go yo a site, pay $5 and download a DVD without the hassle of p2p, torrents, usenet, or whatever other means. Either make us happy, or you will never win. It's not like we are asking for a lot ya know, just fair service. - bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't care about Vin Diesel and I didn't see any of the Fast & Furious movies. I was bringing him up as an example of "bad movies" meaning anything he's in.
- chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree. I find it amazing that people are compeltely ignoring the implications of the article and focusing on the title that is being released...
Of course that does bring up the question of "Why would they test the waters with a movie that not many people want in the first place?" Not a true test IMO, but a good step. - Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gubbas, no, because CinemaNow has been offering "download and burn to DVD" for a while now. They're not doing this just to prove that it won't work. The only thing new here from CinemaNow's perspective is that people will be able to "download and burn to DVD" the same day that the DVD hits retail.
BTW, according to CinemaNow's site, their "download and burn to DVD" system gets you the whole DVD, including menus, deleted scenes, etc; so it's not just the movie. - gubbas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you think about it, this reaction is probably planned. After no one downloads the flick (because no one wants to watch it) the movie industry will herald that offering downloads is a waste of time because of the poor response.
- Dolemite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yet another trend started by the pr0n industry adapted by the mainstream. I do have to admit I didn't expect studios to start adapting this technology for at least another 10 years.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With all these different ways to watch different movies now (Apple, amazon, DVD, HD-DVD, BluRay, etc, etc, etc) is anyone else reminded of the excellent saying "The best thing about standards is there is so many of them"?
I wish there could be a complete decoupling of movie and delivery format. You want to download? Fine. Now pick your movie. It's a shame that the movie studios get all bundled up with a certain company's delivery method, so if I want a certain movie, I have to use their niche delivery method.
No thanks. Consumer confusion never helped a market. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't need 8gb to get DVD quality... you would if you insisted on using a craptastic codec like MPEG2, of course, but you could get a DVD quality (480p) 2 hour movie into sub 2gb file with h.264 no problem. It would probably look better than DVD, which has some fairly obvious macroblacking and gradient (especially red colored) problems.
You can't play that directly on your TV, but you could transcode it on the fly while burning to DVD and get (very very) near DVD results no problem, or use a network streaming device (like the upcoming iTV from Apple) to get the 'full' quality. - Sartori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You were in a hotel room... with a pretty girl... and you watched 2 Fast 2 Furious???
Perhaps you are a homosexual!
And there's nothing wrong with that :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nothing in the world will get a bit more interesting as long as "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" is involved.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@chat - Apparently Diggers tend not to see the big picture. It doesn't matter about the title, it matters that a company is actually getting closer and closer to what people want.
It would have been great though (and probably a lot more successful) if they used a title that people would actually want to download. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For this particular movie, they're only charging $9.99.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Bokista - Can you please tell me where you can purchase a movie on the first day of release for $9.99? I usually pay around $14-$15.
- Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There would defnately need to be clearly stated hardware requirements for that, as older systems would not be able to decode h.264 "on the fly" but could certainly download and convert then burn if HD space was available.
I think the valid point was price for product. I would gladly pay 4-10 bucks for a download and burn, compared to 3 for a few days rental, or 14 for full original in cover. - thewayne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The problem I have is, they are charging $19.95 to purchase a new DVD. Then you have to provide the disc, if you want to burn it. When I can go to any of the many wal-marts within five minutes of my house on release day and get it for $14.95 with a disc and all included propaganda. If they would drop the price of new releases to $9.95 I would actually consider it.
- nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The same thing will happen here that is already happening with MP3's.
1) Entice the uneducated public to download lower quality source media than the original for near enough the same price.
2) Wait a few years and offer the opportunity to download it all over again at full quality, i.e. losses from iTunes.. Oh and then in HD.
I would pay 4/5 dollars for a 8GB DVD download, but I won't pay anything for a sub-standard DVD when I can download it for free or buy the original for not a lot less. - Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was referring to the other movies on CinemaNow's list.
- razicop, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1Really good news, thanks for share this rock star news :-)
- roguepixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah as much as I have no desire to see Fast and the Furious 3, its nice that the movie folks are pulling their heads from their asses to find that technology of this sort is good not a hindrance. Welcome to the Internet, your about 5 years or so late.
- XMinusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont think they will have a clear results on how well its going to work becuse no one is going to buy the dvd or the download for this ***** ass movie. the second one wasnt crappy enouge so they had to make a 3rd one
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so many haters in this thread.. I love Japan, and enjoyed this movie(despite the Gaijin actors :P)
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah right...
- NyteStarNyne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4@ zybch - Vin Diesel makes a cameo in the flick. Though even that doesn't warrant a rental for me.
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If Vin Diesel builds water retaining structures, would they be Diesel Dikes?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Burn it yourself? This makes me think they are offering a craptastic compressed 4.7 GB version to fit on your DVD+R.
I think instead I will choose non-crappy movies from netflix and burn those instead. Much cheaper. - iNoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Tokyo Drift. Speed make no translation? Its so AWESOME movie!
- thewayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes, but searching through their site the "good" movies are $19.99. I am not going to pay to see the movie dicussed in this article.
- bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5The idea of a DVD disc on demand sounds good to me so there aren't thousands of copies of Gigli or some Vin Diesel movie occupying our landfills. I hope this technology works for the average consumer who... would.... want a Vin Diesel movie.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Funny because I saw a copy of it just chilling in the back room at my CompUSA a week ago (I work there). I could have easily purchased it with my discount a week before it was released, but I wouldn't want to waste money on the garbage.
- JackHererUK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1He does make a cameo apperance at the end
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I seriously felt like a homosexual coming out of the theater after watching the first one.
I watched the second one with a pretty girl in a hotel room, again I was feeling very dorky and weird after it was over.
I will not watch this ***** again, it may actually turn me into a dorky homosexual.
I cant explain the lame feeling I get after watching these movies - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6TOOOOKEEEYOOH DRIIIFYAHHH (in japanese accent)
