- ptbw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27I find this kind of disturbing and inconsistent with what religion is all about... This just makes them look desperate
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Mormons aren't christians, they're a bunch of cultists who delude themselves into thinking they're christians.
- BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22That's pathetic. If people join your church for an iPod contest isn't that defeating the whole purpose you want them in church?
- Carbamide, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26Totally desperate. Reminds me of a church in Tulsa, OK who, a few years ago, gave 10 dollars to each person who wasn't a normal member of their church that came on Easter.
Sad really. It's like the rich kid who'll give you his GI Joe to play with him. Churchs are having to resort to bribery to get people to believe their fairy tale. - Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18@engalicorn: Just what I was thinking.
As a chuch going member myself, this does some corny and consumeristic. While I'm all for free stuff, this does seem like an unholy marriage IMO. - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -22/+33Free iPod? Church me up, bitch!
- Stikes, on 10/12/2007, -17/+26I won a Slim PS2 when they were brand new about a year ago from a Christian Youth drawing for new members.
I yelled out "JESUS CHRIST! *cough* .....of latter day saints?" - engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21Great! This is just we need! Another digg post so people can flame bait about religion!
- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Holy crap, that church is only 2 miles from my house.
Maybe I should check out my free iPod, I mean god of course. - Aurarch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12And so the degradation of our society continues..
- Jeral, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14That is totally pathetic... church should never be about membership and churches certainly should not be bribing people to come... It should always simply be about its message... sin, salvation, the parties involved, and their roles... Stupid neo-Christian churches... they shame the rest...
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Being Christian is more than a belief in Christ. I believe in Satan and Lime Green Jello. Does that make me a Satanic Jelloist?
Mormons are not accepted because their church is a cult founded on a direct violation of canonical scripture, namely passages like Deut 12:32 and Rev 22:18. There's an even better one I can't think of off the top of my head that says "let anyone who does this be accursed". So it is with Joseph Smith, Jr when in his ignorance of scripture he failed to follow 1 John 4:1 having been confronted by demons and delivered what is now known as the Book of Mormon. - DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Shuffle?
Jesus really was a jew! - Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@ice:
Mormons aren't Christians. Also, Protestants split from Catholicism, not the other way around.
Please take a minute to re-read your history book when you get the chance. Thank you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mormon history states that Joseph Smith founded the church in Fayette, New York, in 1830 after being directed by the angel Moroni to dig up a set of inscribed golden plates. On these plates were the written history of the ancient people in America.
They were the ancient Hebrews who migrated to North America around 600 B.C. Later Jesus Christ, after his death, came to preach to these lost tribes of Israel in America. Mormons take the scripture John 10:16 to justify this belief. The tribes eventually split and became enemies, the Nephites and Lamanites. The Lamanites practiced genocide upon their neighbors, and the punishment for that was to have their skin turned dark to show God's displeasure.
South Park does a great job explaining how the cult came to be. "dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb" - rosswf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thats worse than Jehovas Witnesses knocking at your door.
How desperate can you be? - djneonshadow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I am a Christian and I also agree that Mormonism is a cult. In Revelation it says whoever adds or takes away from this book (the bible) will have his name removed from the book of life. The Mormons have added books to the bible, (which were written in the 1800's) and have therefore violated scripture. I don't say this to slam Mormons, I am only stating the facts.
The only thing that is important, and the only way to become a Christian, is to believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us from our sins. Believe this, and ask him for forgiveness, and you will be saved. That's it. No "shock treatment". You don't even have to go to church if you don't want to (although I would encourage you to do so, as this promotes spiritual growth and good Christian fellowship.) If anyone is interested in hearing more, I would encourage you to go to www.yourchurch.com and download some of Pastor Kimber Kauffman's messages. He is the pastor of my church and I think anyone could get a lot out of hearing him teach.
As for the story, I don't really agree with this churches methods, as they are probably sending the wrong message to the very people they are trying to bring in. - mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14uh pleace ice.... mormonism is so far away from Christianity it shouldnt even be considered... just cuz it says "Jesus Christ" in the name doesnt make it Christian
- thecorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any church that offers you a free iPod Shuffle will probably be passing out the free Koolaid next.
- windex99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is wrong to get people into their church, but it doesn't mean i need to start hating God because of it.
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@icefrakker:
When someone states their opinion its usually not considered very civil to respond with "...before you open your ***** mouth"
Until people learn the basic courtesies of discussion and debate digg will never be able to compete with more mainstream editor based website. - Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Okay kids listen up, Unity Interfaith is neither Christian nor Mormon nor any one single type of religion. Unity Interfaith is collection of several religions all lumped together like some weird Wachowski brothers superbelief system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interfaith - engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are the only person here who could find any humor. Everyone else is dropping the gloves. Good on you!
- Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12this is a bit unorthadox. actually, it's quite unorthadox. as a Christian, this bothers me, seeing a church resorting to this, but seeing as how few people (especially a good majority of you on digg) give a crap anymore, i can see their plight, though i disagree with it.
let the people come
diss me, diss the Church, mod me down, go ahead, it won't do you any good - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's too bad this church can't convert people using the truth, instead they have to lure people in with material objects.
BTW, I just blocked five users because they were ragging on a church that has nothing to do with the story. But I did remember to vote them down before I did ;) - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pathetic, Pathetic, PATHETIC!
This church should be investigated 1) Why do they need to bribe people to come into church 2) Where did they get all the money for the iPOS. - magstheaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2" don't dislike faiths but they do seem to cause many problems in the world about territory and who's right "
Synagence, do some reading about history. The problems you talk about are caused by overpopulation, fighting for resources, and just plain lust for power. People invoke God to make it seem like they're on the side of right, but it's just like Bush using the tragedy of Sept. 11th to justify the invasion of a country that had nothing to to with those attacks. Just because someone says they're starting a war in the name of Christ doesn't mean that they are telling the truth. - capitocapito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What happened to the days when the only thing required to bring people in to church was Jesus's love?... and an unlimited supply of fish.
- magstheaxe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No religion can touch Joe Stalin's record of bloody massacre. He was an atheist, of course, but the atheists conveniently forget him.
- kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I see this as a good thing personally. It means church attendance is so low they're having to bribe people to come.
Great news, long may the numbers dwindle. The more people that are free of supernatural thinking the better. - liuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and Eve gave the forbidden Apple to Adam, and Bill Gates kicked them both out of paradise
- Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What do you think that iPod is going to come preloaded with? It'll do you no good during the sermon.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@jpwhitmore you mean "accept" and not "except"
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Mormons aren't christians, they're a bunch of cultists who delude themselves into thinking they're christians."
Most Mormons I know act more like Christians than most (non-Mormon) Christians I know.
Personally I am a recovering (former) Catholic... - smackfumaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is why I stay away from churches that are all about the $. Preachers driving new caddies and talking about their new mission to Africa and their collections for a new audio/video upgrade to their existing POS system just make me wanna puke. I don't want to go somewhere I am pressured or made to feel guilty about so I can worship. Yea yea, I know, tell me I don't have to put anything in the collection plate. I know this. The simple fact remains, I don't want to contribute to new A/V equipment and new cars and new videos being made of the pastor traveling the Congo on his 'mission' / vacation. Ick.
- galore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Also, why aren't LDS members "Christian"? We belive in Christ."
Maybe you understand if you consider this:
A lot of gay and lesbians believe in Christ but I heard that plenty of Mormons claim that gay and lesbians aren't real Christians because, well, they are gay or lesbian........
Just as lots of people (especially Mormons) think that gay and lesbians can't be Christians, non Mormons also think that Mormons aren't real Christians - it conflicts with what they believe. - techmaster7b, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, another reason not to go to church.
- PumpItUp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Shuffle in and soar out"
That would be a good tagline if it didn't also apply to the strip club down the street. - synagence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Its a very sad state of affairs that church thinks material goods would induce someone to sit through a dull dreary sermon
I've only ever been to church twice (this was roman catholic too) for weddings of friends/family and i couldn't wait to get out and the written notices of confirmation by the children made me actually sad to think that some children so young are so blinded by parents/church that its taken without question....
I don't dislike faiths but they do seem to cause many problems in the world about territory and who's right - omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a thought...isn't Satan the guy who bribes people for their souls? Who's running this church?
...and aren't there a few passages in their Bible referring to the eschewing of material things...you know "lay not your treasures where moth and dust doth corrupt, lay them up in heaven", etc.
Yet, here they are preying upon people's greed to get them in the door. Now that's just sad.
iChurch. Where no hypocrisy is too big. - skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Of course, downloadable Godcasts of sermons.
- Phantombagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, the church's must be getting really desperate.
- kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol thats exactly what I was thinking
- thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think they're hoping you'll see the light once you're in church . Hardest part is getting them out of the pasture and into the barn. :) lol
- wvufan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Praise the Lord and pass the iPod!
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Look at that, I'm born again. At least until my eBay auction posts.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bloody cult.
- magstheaxe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I don't like religion. I think it is the cause of much of the divisiveness in the world now and back into the past."
Yeah, because the love of money and power has been such a force for good in the world.... - h0w412d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Okay kids listen up, Unity Interfaith is neither Christian nor Mormon nor any one single type of religion. Unity Interfaith is collection of several religions all lumped together like some weird Wachowski brothers superbelief system."
When a Church or individual makes a mistake the religion or religions all dump on it and say they have no connection with it or they're not interpreting the Bible or Koran correctly. When're they gonna take responsibility for the actions of their followers? You can't choose who's in your religion and who isn't to make yourself look better. Not to mention they probably paid for the iPods with money from tithes and donations.
"Come to our Church and buy an iPod shuffle for yourself at an inflated 500% price!" - magstheaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's great, too. Just adds more credence to the "many are called but few are chosen" verse.
