- SpykerSpeed, on 07/11/2009, -3/+22What's their success rate? I'll bet it's close to 0% after the kids are released.
For some strange reason, people think the solution to internet/videogame addiction is sending the addict to a boot camp or wilderness expedition. That's absolutely lazy thinking ("Duhr, the opposite of computers is TREES.").
The reason people get addicted to these things is because a part of their brain is rewarding logical behavior (clicking, pressing a button). When you click, you see whatever you want. The cycle begins, and people start to get more immediate gratification from the internet than from the real world (where the input device isn't as straightfoward - sometimes it's even illogical or roundabout).
The solution to these types of addictions isn't to quit the internet cold turkey. It's to slowly wean yourself off it, just like a diet starts with a small change in calories and gradually grows with time. People can only change voluntarily. - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -3/+18They need something like this for Diggers.
- Garciat, on 07/11/2009, -3/+15"Besides eating and sleeping, these students spend each day entirely on the Internet," Tao said in an interview. "They don't even shower or wash their clothes."
- yocouchdigga, on 07/11/2009, -0/+9I'm jonesin' for some internet even when I'm on the internet; got it bad, man.

- Derrekito, on 07/11/2009, -1/+9The horror.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 07/11/2009, -3/+11How can you be a web addict in China when everything is censored? With only two websites you can legally visit (www.ilovemygovernment.cn and www.bigbrotheremail.cn) it seems like it must take a lot of work to be an addict.
- MercenaryMuffin, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7This is not a law that forces people into boot camp. This is a rehab center for treatment.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -7/+14You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away - STARTRAK4907, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6the World of Warcraft freakout kid needs this badly!
- jayjayjoni, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5"Still, only about 70 percent of the teenagers are "cured," as judged by whether the parents are satisfied, Tao said."
Apparently it's 70%.
:( - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4.... says the guy blogging on the internet...
- tomserito, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5It seems like an elegant plan by China to me:
1. Get kids hooked on gaming
2. Send the youths to bootcamp
3. Enlist the young adults into the military when they realize they have no other life skills. - antdude, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3"I can quit anytime."
- MattSc0tt, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3These kids must be in rough shape for their parents to spend 1,200 USD for the treatment :/
- Destrider, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3I guess the Chinese government doesn't like Chinese gold farmers either.

- JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Apparently, that's true. They passed a law that made virtual economies illegal.
Of course, I haven't read an analysis of that law and how it would/could be applied yet. If it was badly written, it could ban computer security, online service premium service accounts, and software license key based software unlocking (i.e. trial versions of software). - craeyon, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I know, I need to get off the webernets. I have wasted so much time on here. I just don't want this to happen to the the younger and more potentially productive generation of people.

- LuckyASN, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2In other news, china cures bulimia by holding competitive eating contests.
- lesliedaggett, on 07/11/2009, -0/+0This is more than a little draconian on the part of the Chinese, However my personal observations indicate there is such a thing as internet or computer/game addiction. There have been many people arrested over their use of their computers, losses of marriages and jobs over compulsive internet use or gaming. It is strange that the APA doesn't consider this an addictive disorder- Internet or computer/gaming addiction aren't mentioned in the DSM-IV TR... but caffeine addiction is. Also their are no 12-Step self help groups for people who abuse computers and internet.
