- jboitnott, on 07/04/2009, -4/+98They (The Chinese Government) apparently don't have an app for that.
- KingGorilla, on 07/04/2009, -2/+54This has nothing to do with Asian Spiderman
- vulcanius, on 07/04/2009, -2/+52And by web crawlers the submitter meant internet users.
- DouglasQ, on 07/04/2009, -2/+34Chinese Web Crawlers are my least favourite Fallout 3 enemies.
- jdmulloy, on 07/04/2009, -3/+31I smell a new Mac vs PC ad in China.
- Type1, on 07/04/2009, -4/+25Here's to China becoming the biggest Ubuntu using country and thus, allowing games* to be developed for the platform. *(More games)
- shinkou, on 07/04/2009, -3/+19Another factor which makes Linux an operating system for those who really care about freedom.
- Jeepinator, on 07/04/2009, -0/+15The OS is going to locally block some content. Read the article. All it says is that the program which China is going to require to be bundled with new computers is not yet compatible with Linux or Mac OS.
- tmyprod, on 07/04/2009, -1/+15and there is porn of everything.
- BxBoy, on 07/04/2009, -5/+19Mac/Linux is for Porn.
- dlan4327, on 07/04/2009, -1/+14Everything is for porn.
- NMRgentleman, on 07/04/2009, -2/+13Free as in free speech - more so than usually, even.
- JasonCox, on 07/04/2009, -2/+12I wonder how long until China bans OSX and Linux...
- walruspanzer, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10win
- Greengoo, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10The Internet is for porn.
- tmyprod, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8wouldn't riding a bicycle through a minefield be a little safer? Think about the size of the track of the bike versus you footprints. If you were to go in a straight line your chances would be vastly improved on a bike.
Snowshoes on the other hand... - Leopards, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8Download and burn ISO, reformat and install = Freedom! Well from Green Dam anyhow!!
- sageerrant, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8As opposed to actual web crawlers, spiders, Spidermen, and the like.
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8you know, maybe this might be a good thing after all, because the whole country will start using Linux, and we'll have a freaking huge user base and start taking over the OS market share.
- Dochirin, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8I highly doubt it, since 95% of the software used in China is pirated.
- Y0tsuya, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7And they'll all use Chinese characters. Sucks for you!
- crossmr, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7China already has a Linux distro. Red Flag linux, dell actually sells it on their machines there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Flag_Linux - atgmac, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7I thought you were joking until I saw your username. Macs are exempt because nobody bothered to make a mac version of the software, not because OS X is superior.
- CamZak, on 07/04/2009, -0/+6Wrong, it filters at the socket/OS level, it blocks firefox/chrome/etc. At least the URL restrictions do. It also closes notepad if you type in certain phrases. Needless to say, such filtering is probably a good way to slow down a computer.
- explodingzebras, on 07/04/2009, -0/+6The chinese government did support a chinese distro called Red Flag Linux http://www.linux.com/archive/articles/21365
- insomniasystems, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5No problem...LINUX!
- norman619, on 07/04/2009, -4/+9Looks like in your world everyone gets FAIL!
China isn't communist. They are a socialist society experimenting with capitalism. Education FTW! - norman619, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5Obscurity FTW!!!
- techdever, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5In soviet Digg, joke buries you!
- BossKey, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5Unix systems FTW!
- techdever, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3rock solid security? lol. Do you know your firewall is turned OFF by default? most users don't even bother turning it on.
- Gabberwok, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3The Goldman Sachs conspiracy was from Rolling Stone, not Digg (although I'm sure there were some looney comments on that article). I think the article goes too far, but he does have a point that Goldman's only purpose is to make money (much like any other investment bank) and they do have more political influence and generally smarter people than the other places, so you would expect them to capitalize upon their advantages as much as possible.
Do I think they have been maliciously generating bubbles and bursts for their own financial gain? Of course not (even Goldman doesn't have that kind of power). Do I think they have been a step or two ahead of everybody else and use that to their own advantage? Absolutely. - techdever, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3suck my balls
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3I saw this yesterday on a porn site
Please use IE as this site has bug with Firefox....
I so did lol I did.
Ubuntu and FireFox, going into the deepest, darkest recesses of the Internet where no Windows machine has ever returned from before....
(Cue Indiana Jones music) - ethana2, on 07/04/2009, -2/+5Practice safe internet. Do it with Ubuntu.
Surfing for porn on Windows is like riding a bicycle through a minefield. - yuanzhoulu, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3well, if people are smart, there's nothing to worry about. because the filtering software is not even mandatory on windows -- it's only mandatory that it's supplied installed, but it's PERFECTLY LEGAL for the consumer to uninstall it, or wipe and reinstall the PC from scratch.
i still disagree with the policy like everyone else, but the smart people in China will bypass the stupid filter without a hitch even if they use Windows because it is in fact legal to do so. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2But you can only use Photoshop CS4 on windows, and write working viruses.
Adobe, the ever stubborn. If they only realized that almost every (non US) education system in the world would switch to Linux and still purchase their gear. - Unconfined, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Chinese government uses GNU/Linux, all chinese Internet Cafes use a specific GNU/Linux distribution and there are plans to ditch Windows all over China - this might be political spin to get people to ditch Windows (I hope it is!) :D
- CaptainYosarian, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Correct me if im wrong here technically speaking but if i was chinese and intent on writing seditious articles, manifestos or you know in search of porn it would probably be in my best interests to learn how to format the computer. Seems like the only people who get screwed are the normal men and women doing work on their computer, who accidentally mis-spell a word and suddenly a cage drops around them and the thought police arrive.
- darrellcskinner, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Sad thing is no one there will know about this other than word of mouth.
- gamepr0, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2You're overdoing it man.
- the8thbit, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2No, we need to draw attention.
We want Chinese civilians using Linux, and it's impossible to censor or block Linux considering its open and free nature. If the Chinese government forces one distro to include this software, the Chinese can just move to another. If the government finds a way to exploit one aspect of the kernel, or a popular distro, the kernel or distro can just be altered for China. - ArchangelZLT, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2I generally agree with your opinion, but how do you "misspell" a word in Chinese?
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1meh. i can read Chinese :-P
- martalli, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Well, Chinese dissidents gets the media's attention, but since the Chinese are people, that probably what most of them are thinking. I'm dual bootin' for porn! lol
- ArchangelZLT, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Not yet. Apparently the gov't announces that a Mac version is in-development, although I seriously doubt that they will go anywhere without someone whom they can steal the code from.
- ArchangelZLT, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1"They will simply create an application that removes all traces of the software."
They already did. Problem is, when the cops are knocking at your door, being computer-savvy probably won't save you. - Darkyuubi, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1lawlz. You sir win the internetnz
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1as in free beer.
- martalli, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Now a cat cooking bacon and posting to Chinese dissident sites using Linux - now that would be something...
