- orangemarmalade, on 10/12/2007, -14/+73Who wants to have dinner with George Bush anyway?
- rishimaharaj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+64"She sure has had more effect on my life that any president has."
Bill Gates is a woman? - intent, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45He wants to make sure his computer meets Vista's requirements.
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Yeah and risk a war that america can't afford to fight. Do you know which country is holding most of america's debt? Yeah, you're right, China. If something like that was to happen, and China began dumping U.S. T-bills, it would send america back to 1929!
- kramer3d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35I bet Gates is looking at Bush and saying "Pwn3d!"
- mclove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30The important thing to note about this is that the White House refused to invite (http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/04/16/news/hu.php) Hu to an official state dinner; all they were willing to do was a less-formal lunch. So if I were the president of China and it was a choice between an insulting lunch with GWB or an elegant dinner with WHG3 I think I'd go with the latter. Of course if I were president of China I'd probably prefer to spend the evening in a hotel room with an attractive aide, but that's a whole different issue.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23You beat me. I'll be eating ramen. The collegiate meal of champions.
- CupofDice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25"The guests will be served a three-course dinner, starting with a smoked guinea fowl salad, a choice of either beef filet with Walla Walla onions or Alaskan halibut and spot prawns before a dessert of rhubarb brown butter almond cake, the event organizers said."
While I will most likely be eating a Salisbury steak, placed in the microwave for four minutes with the covering cut over the steak and mashpotatoes, then cooked for another 3 minutes. Oh hell, I might even splurge on some bread. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27hey you go war that debt goes to zero.
the real problem is getting China to ship our wepons over here so we can shoot back at them. - stacyspear, on 10/12/2007, -20/+39Perfect time to take out two dictators!
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Not "technology" necessarily - but "business". Money runs the world, so it only follows that those who control the money are, in turn, the policy makers and trend setters. The government is becoming (has become?) a puppet of big business.
- jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Why does he have only 7 bedrooms but 24 bathrooms. Does the thought of having so much money, sicken him that much?
- yorxs, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Who says Bill Gates is not the world's most powerful man. She sure has had more effect on my life that any president has. My career, my finanances, they way I comunicate and even my home decore are all direct results of BG.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+111. China is not holding the USA's debt, rather they have invested in the debt instruments of the USA which are sold on the open market. May seem like a null point, but both financially and politically there is a HUUUUUUUGE difference. China can't demand payment tomorrow as the myth goes, they can indeed sell their debt at whatever pace the market can consume. That would drop prices of the Treasury Bills/Notes/Bonds, raising short term interest rates for the short term. All in all, contrary to myth no big deal. In as much it would hurt the US economy, it would destroy the Chinese economy. The Chinese have not bought up so much in US Treasuries for any other reason than it is solid and safe.
Now, regarding this visit. Since when does the foreign dignitary visit the most important place/person first?
NEWS FLASH FOLKS, world leaders often visit around the country first then hit the big-wig visits last. They are trying to warm up the local press to their presence, create a buzz, get things stirred up a bit before saying "Howdy" to the local sherriff.
No digg, no big deal... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10then you make one, hell, ain't half of the parts made in china anyway?
- MyNameIsFred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"..China began dumping U.S. T-bills, it would send america back to 1929!..."
And it would send China (and the rest of the world) back to 1829. There is an old, and true, statement that when the US economy sneezes, the rest of the world catches pneumonia. Simply because the US economy is so freaking large. If you're going to play economic warfare, its best to play from a winning position. China dumping T-bills would not be a winning position. - Darkspyder86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Bill Gates for President?
- kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8msaleem, if I'm not mistaken, as of last year, Japan owned $1.2 Trillion of American debt while China owned only $325 Billion.
However, if I am not mistaken, China is the fastest growing holder of American debt, as of last year. - fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I wonder if Steve Jobs got an invite...
- jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Lighten up, he may have been joking.
- eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why don't you read the article?
"The Chinese government issued a decree two weeks ago that all PCs will need to have a licensed operating system software installed before leaving the factory gates..."
Would most all of the Linux variants not be licensed? So essentially this is saying, stop throwing commercial operating systems on computers without license. Companies like MS require that you negotiate a commercial license, whereas free / open source software usually asks that you abide by some list of constraints if you choose to use the software. - TWiTsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Do you know which country is holding most of america's debt? Yeah, you're right, China."
Actually, only 15% of our national debt is foreign owed. Although the largest portion of that 15% may be owed to China, 85% of our over 8 trillion dollar debt is owed internally. Thus, your point is essentially moot. - twisterX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10BG is trying to get an even bigger monopoly becuase of the deal they made. No PC in china can ship without an OS installed to "Prevent Piracy"
What if someone wanted to install linux on a bought machine. Why should they need to purchase Windows if their not gonna use it.
Guess the guys at MS are really starting to think that Linux and OSX could be a threat to their wonderful monopoly. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Actually, Bill couldn't make it- so his house is going to build an exact replica robot to take Bill's place at the dinner table.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ummm its not like President has never met with President Hu before ...matter of fact, they already had several meetings in China and they were supposed to meet in Washington DC sometime last September but it was postponed because of Hurricane Katrina.
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9He wants to talk to Bill about adding China's NSA dll next to the US one to help control their people. Corporations are jumping up and shouting to be the next to help China's gov't totalitarian rule. Shows that you should never put too much power in corporations, they will sell you out.
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"whereas free / open source software usually asks that you abide by some list of constraints if you choose to use the software."
Mostly correct, but let me nitpick a bit:
whereas free / open source software usually asks that you abide by some list of constraints if you choose to DISTRIBUTE the software. - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I think this is an emphatic display of technology transcending politics.
- tjl2015, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8One interesting thing about this is that being president of China really doesn't mean much. There are four important positions in China:
1. Head of the Communist Party
2. Head of military
3. President (Head of State)
4. Premier (Head of Government)
Hu Jintao holds the first three positions, the first two being the most important. Being the president of China is like being the Queen of England, a purely ceremonial role. The fourth position is held by Wen Jiabao, it is akin to being prime minister. In the United States, the last three, and to some degree the first, are held by President Bush.* The real significance of this visit is that the head of the Chinese Communist Party and the head of the Chinese military is having a nice, long discussion with Bill Gates into how best to repress free speach and oppress the Chinese masses
*In this case, Bush would possibly be considered the head of the party in power, the Republicans, not the Communist Party, of course. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ShadowRider: Bill Gates is not the US. He is a citizen of the US.
no one is insulting china, it's just a meeting between gates and your president along with other large northwest companies and politicians. your president could have met up with Bush in washington DC if he wanted to.
This is Washington state, the other side of the country. - zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@stacyspear
THREE DICTATORS you mean - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Interesting article, but possibly the worst written one I have seen in a very, very long time
"China president"... that's just awful, China's president, Chinese president, or ideally 'The president of China' thank you very much
"The White House? No." Rhetorical questions in a news story? No. A very lazy writing technique
I could go on, but I wont. My point is that online journalism needs sorting out, I'd get fired for writing like that - nars, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6why not ship with linux?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5House prices are subjective, they're worth what someone is willing to pay for them, not some precise calculable amount
- cazbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It might get our patent system fixed.... or screwed up more. But at least he would try.
- TheRepublic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Actually no, he has diplomatic immunity which means he can call Bushy the worst president, and or make very bad remarks towards Dubwa's presidency, all with no trouble at all. Like they say..unbreakable, in this case it would be untouchable. Forget the persona non-grata BS.
- wankey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Chinese people are oppressed? In China, they think we're oppressed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The bathrooms are probably that far apart that you need that many not to have to walk for ages to get to one, hence having lots
Don't forget we're talking a much larger scale than your average house here - Ajzzz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That was one of my better jokes, don't make me go into the Hu/Who, Wen/When, material.
- StaplesGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hu Jintao and Bill Gates?
Kidding, I hate bush as much as the next guy - blahblah, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8^ Generic lemming pro-bush remark. It's a lot easier to simultaneously be an idiot and think bush is doing a good job, than it is to be an idiot and think he is doing a miserable job, since he is in fact screwing the world over.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I wonder if Jobs WOULD invite.
- robohoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have never heard of any of these dishes...Hell I never heard of those words :|
Fancy.... I guess the peasants aren't allowed to eat that kind of food. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually a lot of people would be happy to enjoy dinner with the president.
- tanveer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This reminded me of what Thomas Friendman wrote in his book:
"In China today, Bill Gates is Britney Spears," Thomas L. Friedman writes about China's celebrity-like obsession with the computer pioneer.
"In America today, Britney Spears is Britney Spears -- and this is our problem." - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"generic lemming anti-bush insult"
Yes i hear people saying that one all the time - flizzoyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Second stop on his tour, the most powerful Chineese American in the US, William Hung.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's much easier to have 3 persons per room than per bathroom, so it makes perfect sense.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Darth Sidious always starts by tricking the Trade Federations
You can learn a lot from a prequal. - Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just like the bad guy from Lethal Weapon 2, I have diplomatic immunity so Hammer you can't sue. Can't Touch This.
