- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wikipedia is a source of information and it's not the quality China is concerned about it's the control. Fact is China is ridden with big brother censorship, its been that way for a 70+ years. We all know it, but I don't think any of us realize how much of it is. Then why isn't Mr Bush pushing his freedom parade in China you ask? Because they are one of North America's biggest trade partners and their army is one of the largest in the world (it is, look it up). The world only cares about human rights when their own personal interests are at risk by not doing anything. Heck we even have our major corporations willing to support their big-brother style information filtering just to do business there. Maybe the Chinese don't mind it, maybe they don't any know better, maybe we don't any know better, but I just don't like it.
- Bindibadgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3beejay has it, and why should this bother anyone other than the Chineese? It's not like most of them havent been subjected to it for most of their lives, infact it's still far better now than it was in the 60s and 70s. You think this is bad? Go to china and watch their TV, 20 channels of the SAME THING is hilarious.
"Makes sense if you're a communist totalitarian regime"
Absoultely, although being communist has nothing to do with it, it's the simple fact that the people in power want to stay in power. Fox news does the same thing - it's a bush pimp machine, just you americans arent as aware of your propaganda because you've been living with it all your lives as well. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Silly China, {Quotes some semi-crap game if I remeber it right} "Resistance breeds revolution" or something :p
I.e the more things you impose upon people, the more people will try and get round these limitations...
Hmm, proxys in another country solve this?
- Ben - dominiccarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I ***** hate censorship. Screw the Chinese government and their lack of respect for the right to freedom of information, a value I hold dear.
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, all hail China.
Next up, China cuts off all Internet access due to the quality and accuracy of the Internet. - RobCowie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Omni: If it happend in the US there would be nothing you could do about it - toleration or otherwise. Most 'free' Countries are not that free.
- KicktheDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Why? Half of Wiki has some commie rant anyway."
Show me one... Just because you disagree with it, or you think it undermines your political agenda doesn't make it communist, or even wrong.
For all you people who moan and complain about the accuracy of the information on wikipedia: How many articles have you edited? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a lot of anger in these comments. It could be caused by the fact that China is becoming such a huge economic and political power, and the United States is in decline. The saddest part is it was all done with American money. Made in China on your stuff - then you're a part of it. - from a sad American
- Omni_Infinate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what binary speaks of i would not tolerate in a free country/USA/
- binaryfluid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, I live in Shanghai... and just went to wikipedia last week... Now, blocked. "Oh no! information that isn't controlled by a company I can pay off to filter/edit/change..."
- wtanaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's definitely not blocked here where I am, so the title's a bit overly dramatic.
People might find this writeup about the firewall (from a bit of a technical perspective) interesting:
http://treehouse.ofb.net/guide/forums/viewtopic.php?p=539
It seems like the firewall is implemented differently from city to city within china.
(see this for an example

) - lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Makes sense if you're a communist totalitarian regime. Oops. China has to block Digg now...Someone badmouthed China.
- dannylewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The idea of communism isn't bad... it just ends up usually becoming corrupt oligarchies or dictatorships because of greedy people.
- mitsuogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey China...
The 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests (Tiananmen Square Massacre or June 4th Massacre or 6/4 incident), were a series of student-led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989. The protest denounced China's economic instability and political corruption and was violently suppressed by the PRC government.
Estimates of civilian deaths which resulted vary: 400-800 (New York Times [1]), 1,000 (NSA), and 2,600 (Chinese Red Cross). Student protesters maintained that over 7,000 were killed. Following the violence, the government conducted widespread arrests to suppress the remaining supporters of the movement, limited access for the foreign press and controlled coverage of the events in the mainland Chinese press. The violent suppression of the Tiananmen Square protest caused widespread international condemnation of the PRC government.
Oh, and.. http://images.google.com/images?q=Tianasquare.jpg&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
Thats all you need to know. - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gee, ya think they would censor this and more if they had control over DNS and the internet?? This is a perfect argument as to why it should remain where its at and not in the hands of communist or unstable governments!
- wtanaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1zdlatham, China's capitalist, and has been becoming more so all the time.
There are a lot of rich people on the East Coast who are becoming richer.
http://treehouse.ofb.net/guide/forums/viewtopic.php?t=274
Don't confuse totalitarian, centralized government (the part of Communism which China is) with drastically socialist egalitarian policies (which China is not).
In fact, the wealth gap in China is currently the largest in the world, which is a problem indicative of capitalism without enough regulations and a tax code without enough progressive aspects. - billflu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0China, just start burning the books...
- cnjmorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be better if they blocked the crap coming out of China instead of the stuff coming in. I would get less spam and fraud emails and would be able to enjoy online games without losers who sell in game currencies for real world cash interrupting my game play.
- retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@DBR_ONIX: just like drugs
- -=IRonGRundy=-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05 Million courageous enough to risk their lives for freedom. What do you think happens to these people that step forward and withdraw...
They are true heros in my book. - larsinio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0China is what every republican in this country dreams of; a totally free economy with the police state powers to do what you want with
- TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cannot believe it - a story about internet censorship in China. They would never do that! What precedents are there?
Anybody who is suprised by this despretly needs to start checking into foreign affairs every 20 or 30 years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"5 Million so far to date!"
OMFG, that's so many, now only 9 billion to go. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Out of 1.2 billion people 5 million does not seem like a lot. But it is a start.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Effing commies...
- Rojahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares? China can go to hell for all I care. No wait... scratch that... I like being able to buy things.
- lafingputz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"01000110 01110101 01100011 01101011 00100000 01000011 01101000 01101001 01101110 01100001 00100001" is binary for "***** China!"
- Mechanized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ larsino
Wow what rhetoric! *applause!* you're obviously in the wrong profession.
Since you've got your finger on the pulse of every Republican.. maybe,
you should have been a palm-reader instead of pitching crappy one-liners
about politics on blogs. - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man if they are trying to industrialize china... they are going about it the wrong way
- stonewall72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Chinese government in there Back-Assward approach to everything is getting it wrong again. They must be ***** stupid if they think they can block the information. The Internet is the biggest bulletin board in the world and they want to sensor it and shut it down. Damn the Chinese government is the biggest bunch of back-assward people on the planet. Hell there own people hate them. That should be the biggest signpost for them that they are doing something wrong especially when the collectively the rest of the world generally stands around and laughs at there stupidity. I say the government of China needs to have there balls cut off and feed to them. Then they will really be the no nut having pieces of ***** that the rest of the world knows that they are. Maybe all the hackers in the world need to start concentrating on killing the Chinese Government.
- perseon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It must suck to live in China.
- JCPicache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is it just me or is this sentence using wrong grammar?
"Under fire recently over the quality and accuracy of some articles, Wikipedians living in China are ***** out of luck."
it implies that the "Wikipedians living in China" are the ones "under fire recently over the quality and accuracy of some articles".
hehe but yeah, all hail china!!!! - jeffremer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bummer, but not surprising.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now thats Too bad China does not Block Comcast.com or G4tv.com.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey i'm not even chinese, but china rocks, i hope they race the US all the way to gobal warming.
But i do think china is a nice country(what good is free speech if no one listens?), especially as what we are all typing on was most likely made in china and/or south east asia.(thailand in my case) - Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@KidVicious: Both the EU, AND the UN want the internet. Yay!! Gee I cant wait to see if either of'em get it.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woah, I'd be on a plane to move to the United States tomorrow. ***** that
- CyberWindCloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they are cummunists. They can do anything they want. No surprise there.
- maxpower17@digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my school blocks wikipedia and i use it all the time at home for info because its a great learning tool so if its a learning tool its must bad for the students pricks i wish i could hack in to the network and take down the admin but I'm no hacker just a cisco student
- zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What did you guys expect from a communist country? It is a good idea, but doesn’t work in the real world. Start respecting USA for how long it’s been around, it works, I say go with it…
“Governments that govern least govern best – Thomas Jefferson - jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Humans can't govern themselves in their current form (mammalians). For organized humans to exist for at least 6000 years, and the longest running current democracy (the United States) is only 229 years old (3.8%), is freaking pathetic. We need divine intervention, now, whether we acknowledge it or not.
- weisonding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha you silly Americans, so much hate towards China! What exemplary American ignorance. I'm living in Beijing and it's pretty great here actually. Much nicer than Washington D.C. I guess it would suck knowing within 40 years China's economy will be much larger than your own, I would be bitter too. Some things that should be cleared up:
1. The people who want to "overthrow" the current CCP mainly consist of college students who are unwilling to accept relatively low-wage jobs. All of them are overambitious pricks who apply for manager positions in some massive company, get rejected and cry at home because they're spoilt one-child city kids.
2. The current government is doing a damn good job with it's economic growth (not development mind you); the economic model it follows is very similar to those of the "Asian Tigers" (export-driven) only on a much larger scale. Economic growth is essential to develop a nation, they can bother with freedom of speech later.
3. Democracy is a piss poor political system for a developing nation. Just look at India, the government pays millions of dollars to ask uninformed illiterates of their opinion; how efficient. A current overthrow of the government will throw 1.3 billion people into immediate chaos and that's not going to be good for the world economy.
4. If China didn't buy so many government bonds from the U.S, your trade deficit with China would have pushed you into an economic depression.
5. The "censorship" isn't too overwhelming, I get CNN and BBC at my place and The Economist every month. I think i get Fox News but it's a pretty crap news channel. Sure the farmers won't get access to CNN, but why the hell would they want to?
6. People aren't pissed at the government for "clinging on to power" or from "censorship"; they're pissed because of the growing income inequality between the higher and lower income groups, and because of corrupt local authorities (though recently many have been sacked).
haha didn't mean to rant, but seriously you guys should not look at China so negatively. It is YOUR government with it's current president that has a narrow-minded and antichronistic view on global politics. I agree that China's government could improve in some aspects..but no system is perfect.. And, well your government got you all excited about going on a "crusade" to Iraq to rid the world of "evil-doers". - Mechanized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wikipedia is the biggest cluster of true anonymity -
And then most of you idiots get pissed off because of the media filtration.
Well, in this case you're spoon-feeding it to yourselves.
-
In this case, China got something right for a change,
I would LOVE to see this entire dribble of commentaries recast if
the USA did something like this.. The loathing, it's almost tangible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"China is what every republican in this country dreams of; a totally free economy with the police state powers to do what you want with"
larsinio, you are a retarded fat american. China doesn not have free economy, chinese economy is completely controlled by the government. China is what every democrat in USA dreams of, a country completly regulated by the government. - matcrawf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@everyone who doesn't realize what goes on in China:
freedom of press is one of the greatest liberties that we all have in a western country, yet we take advantage of it. newspapers, tv news, internet, is ALL FILTERED. you can't get on nytimes.com, farther than the main page. after the terrorist attacks in london, CNN world was blacked out for almost a half hour. gmail.com would be 'unavailable' for days at a time.
I dont really know where I am going with this, but blocking wikipedia.com may seem like a big deal to you people, but in reality - this is a normal thing that goes on in China. So I would just use http://anonymouse.is4u.de/ which solved all my problems.. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As with anything from any source you have to take it with a gran of salt.
China well there just crazy.
Wikipedia, its a living encyclopedias of knowledge.
The nice thing is having lots of submitters and lots of reviewers content will be corrected.
Wikipedia is still a great net resource.
I'm sure people can still use there brain or has critical thinking become lost to us as a species - Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Free China From The Cencors
Viva La Resistance! - VincentDWater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just accomplished a whole academic quarters worth of studying in about three hours thanks to red-bull and Wikipedia. Finals suck, but having access to wikipedia is absolutely the sh*t.
Cencorship sucks ass for people who get off on that over-rated human rights and individual freedom horsesh*t. A powerhouse economy fueled by the tears of the oppressed and the blood of infanticide-victim baby girls should of course be the goal of every nation. We can power our turebines with the heat of burning pages. It really is too bad we can't burn the internet.
I'm actually not that bitter that my dollar is going to be worth less than the Chinese's. I would rather stumble down a cobblestone street by my own Free Will than wear platinum shackles and be forced to march single file neatly down neat marble halls. - Duncan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it rather amusing how some many people are all like 'f*ck china' and no doubt 99% are dumbarse americans, why do I say this? Because its true.
No really, it is.
Heres why, China arent dumb, they just have a different political system and way of working their country. Just because you dont understand it or like it doesnt make them dumb - that makes you ignroant.
Additionally, China could screw the absolute ***** out of you and force your country into the biggest economic crisis you have ever seen, they hold BILLIONS of dollars of your currency.
Sure, they prolly wont do it because you buy so much ***** from em, but its food for thought..
Im not chinese, and im not american. and glad for that too. -
