- statik99, on 11/03/2009, -6/+47Please note, the article contains nothing with the code in it; this is a post from a long time digger that is concerned about the community that we as diggers have helped to build by spreading the word of Digg, linking to the site, contributing and making the community what it has come to be as a leader of user submitted content sites.
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Well you had better watch out still, I put up a story about this that did not contain the key or even link to it for that matter. It was buried because it put forth information that shows Digg has an active relationship with the HD-DVD group and paints them in a bad light.
I refuse to be part of this community after tonight and will be leaving for other sites.
(I would post the key here but I wont because I would like to see this story survive.) - statik99, on 11/03/2009, -12/+24@mimorox
To be honest, I think spamming the hex stuff in comments is a little out of line.
I'm sure this would have just come and gone but when stories started disappearing that's what set the internets a storm. I almost liken this to the RIAA. I do have to agree with Digg, there does have to be moderation of some sort; I see a lot of spam in the new stories area a lot of the time and I'm glad they can take care of that but the community also adds to the greatness of that by not promoting crap. :: sighs :: I guess sometimes good things do have to come to an end, it will be interesting to see how Digg rebounds from this. To me this was a little trivial, I've seen worse posted; but perhaps there could be more of an explanation so the fire dies down a little. - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Mimorox you have shown your ignorance in multiple stories now, i bit my tongue on the first one i saw but...
This isn't a little phrase, it's not a random string of numbers like you called it before, it's a representation of greedy corporations, and the realization that digg is not about the users, it's about the sponsors. The realization that the Kevin, who everyone loved, could backstab the very people who make the site possible and succesful, the users.
***** you, and ***** kevin. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Digg already explained that they removed the stories for legal reasons. That is not too out of line - they are legally required to do so, and may be sued or shutdown if they do not. Why is this so hard for people to understand?
- HullCrushDepth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The problem many people have is the overly heavy-handed way they dealt with this situation. Digg users feel their trust has been violated because of it.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think they should spam the link not because digg is censoring it, but because DRM ***** sucks and we should tell the RIAA/MPAA/AACS that we are tired of their *****!
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3damn...
crazy digg riot. - interrelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How many people has an HD-DVD player anyway? or BluRay for that matter.
- mlwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OK, think about this, if digg get's sued, the real life owners of the site will pay.
You cowards posting the key, grow some balls and post your name and address with it. I BET you won't. Why? Because you don't want to get sued.
I finally know how many 13 year olds are using digg. - diemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder what it's like at the Digg headquarters...
- MASH007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Everyone needs to grow up. Welcome to America were good citizens obey the law. Digg does not have the resources to fight any kind of lawsuit, and doesn’t wish to break the law.
Everyone who is posting the key is just causing trouble, and should just leave Digg. If you are truly pissed over this issue, then prove it, leave Digg and don’t come back. Good riddance.
I also think the silent majority would agree with my statements. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who here *honestly* thinks Digg.com will "fail" because of this stupid thing?
The site draws millions, and it's going to take more then a little story spamming trouble to do any real harm. I mean, if you had a company based on a single web site that made you rich, would you say "hmm, this kinda sucks. Let's close down." It's almost as ridiculous as the people saying "Because the Wii is outselling the PS3, Sony is going to give up on the PS3." - DJNephilim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What most people are "forgetting" is that all of this is WELL within the rights of the owners of the website. All the post deleting, banning, all that stuff is perfectly spelled out in the TOS which ALL of the digg users AGREED to when the signed up for the site.
READ THE DAMN TOS PEOPLE.
This has nothing to do with free speech. This is a privately owned website, and as such, you have only the "rights" the owners let you have with regards to participating in it. - Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IMO Digg just shot themselves in the foot with their censorship. The whole thing would have turned to water under the bridge, but now Digg will be spammed to death with this HD-DVD stuff.
- psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Guys this ***** needs to stop. I like digg. I don't want it to die because of this crap. At this rate investors are going to completely drop it and then what would we have.......slashdot?
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6OH PLEASE!
http://digg.com/search?s=torrent&submit=Search§ion=news&type=both&area=promoted&sort=new
I've seen PLENTY of copyright material illegally posted on Digg (how about those "free tv show" indexes that popup every week?). This is about sponsorship. - fscker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The front page said this story had 189 comments.... i can only see 6... what happened to the rest??
- interrelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WTF? 1200 diggs to 600?
- iminaufo, on 10/12/2007, -29/+31The Digg blog says it all. It's against the law, or at least it's very questionable. If all you're interested in is this key, shell out the $$$ for legal fees for Digg, or let it go. Move onto another site if you want, in the end no site that gets any hits is going to want to bear this cost for you.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@loker269
I fully agree. All this has done is shown Digg to be looking out for themselves. I don't necessarily blame them, but I sure as hell don't support them.
@mimorox
I don't want to be part of a community that censors what I say or write. Its a hex code, for christs sake. It can be converted to an integer. Would that be any better? What about binary? Digg can ban my account, but they will have lost an active member of the community, and many more by the look of things. Remember, the value of digg is in the community, much like it is on Myspace, and every time someone posts an MP3 of a copyrighted work on that site Myspace doesn't ***** itself. Also, I hate Myspace (just so you don't think I'm a fanboy). - ShBm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thedeceiver, I'm all for the riot, but I had to block you so I could at least look at the page. please stfu
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You cannot copyright a number. Hence the term 'digital revolution'. It was predicted to change media distribution and it is. Look at ANY other sites, the number has not been removed. The only reason this has been censored here is because Digg accepted money from the HDDVD consortium. Check the facts. It's sadly (and somewhat frighteningly) true.
- burrito4891, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you guys are retarded. nobody cares about hearing the same ***** over and over. Go ahead and leave, cuz the rest of us will enjoy digg without its childish anarchists.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm utterly confused. The entire front page is full of these HD-DVD stories, and has been for hours, yet people are still acting as if they are being persecuted?
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't believe this. They take steps to protect themselves from a lawsuit because OMG THEY ARE PEOPLE WITH REAL FINANCES (and I HIGHLY doubt the EFF could do jack squat to help them) and you all feel the need to trivialize the site and pretty much render it useless.
Good job, guys. Maybe Digg'll have some news in a day or so ... you've made your point, now for God's sake stop it!
And The_Deceiver, welcome to my blocklist. - omarciddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm interested in seeing how much conversation digg's stories will have once all the trolls and immature bandwagoners flock somewhere else. Who knows, maybe it'll become a faster slashdot.
- barakatx2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think they should replace digg with a page telling people that they will put it back up after all these spammers stop being ***** babies and grow up. I hope that most of these people are kids, because if these people are adults acting like this, then digg is *****. This is the equivalent of a parent telling their child not to say a certain phrase because it offends their friend, and then the child going around shouting it in defiance, and then getting mad when they are punished.
- err0r503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The community as a whole embarrasses me tonight. Digg did the responsible thing, they do not have the money to fight this. If this community was decent, everybody that wasted time and effort could have donated money to a legal fund to fight this instead of fighting against the very site they visit.
Can we please get the ***** over this??? - ghostlywind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3a friend of mine said the code doesn't work anymore is this true?
- Blakeeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's only one solution: http://digg.com/programming/Move_digg_to_the_Tor_network
- j37hr0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg has sponsors and Advertisments? Wow, Adblock really kicks ass!

- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see...can I comment now? This is absolutely ridiculous.
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Banned form commenting? or does a certian phrase referring to a failed relationship hold the key?
- mlwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, think about this, if digg get's sued, the real life owners of the site will pay.
You cowards posting the key, grow some balls and post your name and address with it. I BET you won't. Why? Because you don't want to get sued.
I finally know how many 13 year olds are using digg. - Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see anything censored you have the code in like 5000 places on digg now lol
- jdc760, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I predict Digg will shut down for a while to let things cool down. Many people will leave. Those left (and all the new users who will hear about Digg because of this fiasco) will carry on with life.

- mobilitatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/tech_news/Exodus_2_0_Digg_Migration
- sofaKing812, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1are comments back up?
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Huge amount of the userbase revolting, site slowing down quite a bit, digg censoring crap and banning users, comments being spammed to hell...What next? Also, I imagine their feedback/emails are getting spammed alot
- Hypelightfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about what seems to be every other site that received a DMCA take down notice since they aren't stupid enough to think its valid?
- Zechs83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eh

- Varz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF!
After seeing (and digging) that story yesterday about the processing key I come home after work and every one of the top 10 stories are about the same thing.....ALL with over 4500 diggs........TOP stories usually only get 3-4000 MAX!!!!
WTF!
Defiance all round. -
