- morgrar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Who wouldn't be carrying a cell phone these days? I see homeless guys in NYC talkin' on cell phones.
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Step 1. Take high res satellite photo of their approximate location.
Step 2. Upload it to Google Earth so thousands of people can see it.
Step 3. Sit down for five minutes because someone will have spotted their car by then. - dargon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29More than likely they lost control on winter roads and went off the road in a secluded, hard to see location. It wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened and nor will it be the last.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24I am surprised there is so little information on this case inspite of the long time since he has been missing.
I am hoping against it but I think whenever the news comes out its gonna be bad. - themarq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14See I told you someone would have thought of that... and to think you all dugg me down :-(
Good luck Kims, hope to hear some good news very soon. - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12So basically you want to turn it into "Where's Waldo?"
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I have a poplice scanner and am listenin to it right now her in Grants Pass, OR. They have found the mom and kids but dad left on snow shoes two days ago to find help. Mom and kids are being airlifted out to the hospital in Grants Pass within the hour.
THIS IS REAL- not fake..."
that was just posted on http://www.jamesandkati.com/guestbook/
hopefully its real! - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's good news! Hopefully they can find them.
- naiku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@venom8599
A Where's Waldo w/ a couple thousand people is better then a handful of police on the street imo. - digitalhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm getting in touch with the guys who run IKONOS now
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5kim@home project?
- jdhoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It would be good if there were a map overlayed on Google of areas where people have searched. I read from the www.jamesandkati.com site that many people have set up search parties locally. If everyone could get together and plot out search areas as polygons on a Google map, with a highlight too of potential routes, perhaps we'd see some areas that have not been searched yet. I'd suggest showing whether they were official police searches, searches on the ground or via air, number of searches involved and for how long, and potentially whether the searches were conducted during the day or night. Allowing people to register and then post their own areas could be useful as well - or more likely having a moderator confirm with those people.
I've probably gotten too detailed - maybe just route hilights, point out last known points (including cell tower), and then where the official searches have been done. - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Are you sure those homeless guys are talking on cell phones, or just talking to themselves.... it is hard to tell with the small bluetooth headsets.... its nice you give them the benefit of the doubt
- tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6excellent idea.
- razordancer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Kidnappers read Digg?
- gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When a family driving on icy mountain roads winds up missing, I know my first guess would be that they were kidnapped.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Update!
"update The wife and daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive and airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference in Merlin, Ore., Monday afternoon."
read the article. - JimV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks like they took the sh*tty road between Merlin and Gold Beach. I believe that road has snow on it right now. It was also snowing the day they were traveling. IF they went off the road/down the hill side, then it would be very difficult to find them. The forest is very dense, and if it was still snowing after they went off, their vehicle may be partly or even completely covered in snow....making it impossible to find them.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What a scary situation... I hope theres a happy ending.
- weezerrock86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whats scary though is that they received the single from the cell phone via the tower so wouldn't that mean the cell phone is getting a reception, (not to keen on cell phones) yet no one has used it to call anyone. :( Have to hope for the best though.
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish the phone had been running for the last week, but sadly this is what is being reported:
"Earlier reports of a cell phone tower ping at 1:30am on 11/26 near Glendale, Oregon have been confirmed by the authorities."
That's over a week since the cell tower received the ping. Why this information could not have been found a week ago is beyond me.
Still I hope they are OK, but its really not looking good. - gray8110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NF23 is largely unpaved and isn't shown on most maps. Bear Camp Rd is shown on every major highway map I've seen for the state - which it probably shouldn't be. It's 1 lane with turnouts, and would be snow covered this time of year.
Regarding the reception. It is very possible (and likely) that the phone can get enough reception to register with a cell tower but not place a call. I can't stress how rugged this area is enough. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sadly, that seems likely.
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While, if you can do it, it probably wouldn't hurt. The fact is it will probably yield no results, here's why.
1. Satellites do not usually hover directly over a location they are taking a picture of. Most of the time it is at an angle, that angle being determined by the satellites orbit. This may not seem like a big deal, but remember that the area the Kim's disappeared in is probably heavily wooded. Try looking at a huge forest some time at a slight angle, all you are libel to see is a mass of green.
2. I do no know the weather, but if it snowed after the car was disabled, the car would be covered with snow, and would blend into the background.
I am not saying its not worth a shot, but know that the chances of finding anything off a satellite image are slim. - UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wouldnt just calling his cell phone be enough to see what tower the phone is communicating with? If it rings his phone the signal is getting through right?
- gray8110, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There are a lot of ways to look at this news. If they are picking up cell reception a week after they've last been seen, it might indicate that the Kims are merely stranded in their car. A cell phone battery generally won't last a week with no usage, especially in a remote area where it has to search for service. Either they've been able to charge it, or are aware enough to conserve power.
There is also good and bad news about the area where they are searching. Bear Camp Road is remote and at relatively high elevation for coastal mountains (over 4,500 feet.) Last year a family was stranded for over a week when their RV became stuck on a road not far away. The bad news is that it is a narrow, single lane road with sheer dropoffs and during the weekend they went missing, would have been covered in snow.
Holding out hope. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate to say it, but don't get your hopes up guys. All it says is that a signal was received from one of the phones, it doesn't say a call went through. It could be as little as the phone pinging the service provider.
- Raz75, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6It does what needs to be done. I don't think the style of the web site really matters.
Fox News, on the other hand...ugh. - digitalhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone give me the center lat/lon for a satellite photo and lets give the IKONOS guys a call. They might be willing to do it pro bono.
- UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You mean like all those ones on google earth that we can view for free? You do know that dont use film any more right?
- GenericNumber1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Confirmed: the video feed said they found the mother and the kids
http://www.cnettv.com/?live=111991
more at 5 PST - mufasa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i've been asking why they did'nt do this since the story first appeared on tuaw.com 4-5 days ago. hope they are found.
- mcwiggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that actually possible.. When is the next time IKONOS is due to pass over.. It can't be that long. Think about it. They had those satellite pictures of 9/11 the day after.
Someone has to know someone who could get us a picture. He could be the first missing persons ever found by satellite - digitalhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The IKONOS guys are on the case. Their VP comms have come back to me. New satellite imagery isn't really viable, but they are pulling up their archives to provide high-res pictures for us to use.
- codester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really hope they can find him. I'm still praying. It's great that they found the family.
- kman2k1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This would likely put them on NF23 instead of the 42.

Judging by the map, not accounting for weather, it's the route I'd have chosen to take because it's the most direct from Roseburg. - JimV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ jdhoover
Some of these areas where they could be just aren't accessible after it snows. The day they were driving was the first snow of the season in the area. Terrible terrible luck. - Nebbie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the cell service to make an attempt to ring his phone the cell company would have to know which tower the phone is connected to so your call would be directed properly. This information is kept on record as well, and that is exactly what this news story is about.
As well, his phone doesn't have to ring, just as long as he is getting any type of service. Cell phones use 2 signals to connect to towers, 1 for the basic link, and another for actual calls that needs a much stronger signal. It doesn't appear that the phone was getting a strong enough signal for a call but was probably registered with a tower briefly. - orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1get back to us with that. i really want to hear what the cost for that is. if its viable, maybe we can set up a web site and a paypal donation account for it. If we can take the picture, we can overlay it with a grid and assign a piece to volunteers who sign up..
- JimV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ GregDigg
THe only thing that would kidnap them on that road is a bear. And we call that getting eaten. Not kidnapped. - feelinduggdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UPDATE: A press conference will be held at Josephine County Search & Rescue Headquarters in Merlin, Ore., at 3 p.m. PST Monday. Readers can stream it here at that time.

The CNET website will stream the press conference. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2siggyfawn: except he's Korean.
- sezzme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dammit... I was warned to stay off that road by the locals when I was there in the SUMMERTIME! Dangerous even for 4 wheelers. I wondered about it's safety in winter.
This whole thing is as stupid as what happened at Oregon's Silver Falls State Park some years ago. There is a fast-moving creek that goes off a 200+ foot cliff. Only 20 feet upstream from the cliff was a footpath that went to the edge of the flowing creek. No barrier between you and creek and the downstream dropoff.
I remember looking at that and thinking, someone is gonna be clueless about that being NOT a place to put your feet...
Sure enough, someone's kid started playing in the water at that very spot, got caught in the water, and went over the cliff.
A week later, they put a fence up in the spot. Too late. :-/
When I heard about that road from Gold Beach, I remember wondering when someone was going to get lost or dead in Southern Oregon on that road someday... looks like I was right. And I wish I wasn't. In the winter: CLOSE THAT DAMN ROAD!!!
(now mumbles some comment that would be sufficiently offensive to folks in Southern Oregon...) - digitalhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The sat imaging guys are asking for the coords of where the wife & daughters were found so they can help with the search. Can someone provide these to me please?
Thx - geuisteses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had the same idea a few hours ago. I posted it to digg to get the idea out too. http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_help_us_find_James_Kim
I sure as hell hope these folks are ok. - kortop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My name is Dae Kim and the store owner of Wolf Creek General store and texaco. They were here my store on last Monday and ask the direction about lower grave creek road.to my employee. So they might took the Lower Wolf Creek road and went to Bear camp area, 45miles away from here. This road is very dangerous at winter time.
I think they took the road from here wolf creek and -lower grave creek -Galice road and then went to the Bear camp. So they need search this route. Please give this information to the search team . I don't know English well. - feelinduggdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep thats all it says but the goal is to find them and that may help narrow the search.
- feelinduggdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am pretty sure many people have and are trying to ring their cell phones. There's supposed to be a update at 3PM PST. So just have to hold out for that for now.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry it doesn't have any Fisher Price style buttons for you to press.
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You know how much that would cost to take satellite photos, alot.I'm sure no one has the money for that sadly.
