- rhartman, on 05/29/2008, -2/+47I don't hold out much hope for this legislation. Charlie Angus is a MP from a district in the middle of no-where with a tiny population. He simply doesn't have the clout to do much more than introduce the bill and then hope that public pressure takes care of the rest. It is an excellent symbolic gesture, but I seriously doubt it will derail the copyright reform bill that the Minister of Industry, Jim Prentice, is about to submit.
- happytedium, on 05/29/2008, -2/+39Dugg for punk rockers in politics.
- amcnamar, on 05/29/2008, -0/+29Regardless, its a solid framework for what a Net Neutrality bill should contain. Whether or not his political influence is significant, it brings the issue back to light in the House. Otherwise, Bell and Rogers continue to throttle unchallenged.
- paranoiabacon, on 05/29/2008, -26/+53People need to stop whining about MrBabyMan, honestly. While I do have a problem with people who seemingly "control" digg, the fact that despite his power-user status only 1/4 of his stories make front page (decided by the readers, obviously) and these are often GOOD stories which would never have made front on their own makes me wary but appreciative.
Also, cool article. Network Neutrality is the bomb. - whereisian, on 05/29/2008, -0/+24I disagree. Angus is the mouthpiece in the House of Commons. This issue is now getting play in the national news. There are some high profile bloggers pushing awareness, notably Geist and Doctorow, who have the ear of many MPs. They have successfully derailed similar motions in the past. They have also successfully unseated MPs over this.
All that really needs doing is to get the official opposition to give it some lip service before it becomes a full blown issue. I think it's only a matter of time before they realize that this is an easy attack on the Harper gov't. The conservatives have completely mishandled the press and don't have many friends left there, so the media is not likely to do them any favours. Dion and co would be stupid not to at least bring this up - the Harper gov't has never been weaker. Dion, while not very personable, is pretty far from stupid.
It might not be this bill that passes, but all that is required right now is to keep Prentice in check before a better solution can be arbitrated and agreed on.
The internet does not have the same status to Canadians as it does to Americans. The larger view in Canada seems to be that the internet is a communication tool, and not so much a content delivery system. Given Canada's history and reliance on telecom for pretty much every aspect of business and life, cooler heads will prevail.
I hope. - jordanmerle, on 05/29/2008, -0/+19How many theoretical dollars do you get for submitting a story?
- rhartman, on 05/29/2008, -0/+17I recently got a call from our local Conservatives asking if Steven Harper could count on my support in the upcoming election. Startled, I asked, "Are we expecting one to be declared soon?" to which the person answered, "Likely in 2-3 weeks." (This was coincidentally 2-3 weeks ago and not a peep..)
Anyways, I went on to say that No, they could not count on my support and stated that it was because of US style legislation that Harper was pushing, including Jim Prentice's "Canadian" DMCA. The person on the other end of the phone actually got me to repeat and explain it so she could write it down. All this is to say that to a large degree whereisIan, you are correct - people in the House are listening and the Tories have such a tenuous grip on power right now that they cannot afford to blithely ignore the issues that Canadians find important.
Because of that, I share your hope and will be thrilled if I proven wrong. - lucian303, on 05/29/2008, -0/+16At least someone's trying to do something about this even in the face of all odds. Go Angus!
- mark076h, on 05/29/2008, -2/+14you joined digg on March 8th, 2008 stick around awhile longer and learn how digg works
- StevesJobs, on 05/29/2008, -6/+18Lots of Canadian injustice recently on digg
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -1/+10Because the RIAA doesn't exist in Canada, genius.
- nobelief, on 05/29/2008, -1/+9net neutrality is injustice?
- SamWest3, on 05/29/2008, -1/+8I was at the rally meeting on Parliament Hill on Tuesday, it's awesome to see at least some of our government cares about this issue! Of course, if you no anything about the parties that form the Canadian Government (and I know you all do), you would realize that the NDP needs at least two of the other major parties (the Conservatives, Liberals, and/or Bloq Québécois) to go along with this before it can become a law. But here's hoping at least one of them has the balls and/or sense to get it past the First Reading!
- Tenlow, on 05/29/2008, -1/+7How is an elected representative of the people working for the people any form of injustice?
- tdogg241, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6***** THE CRIA
- kgool, on 05/29/2008, -0/+5I would certainly not call him a punk rocker unless he did something radically different before Grievous Angels who I do remember.

- wellyuk, on 05/29/2008, -2/+7IT'S NOT A ***** COMPETITION! What difference does it make who submits a story? Why does digg have to be like what, exactly?
- SocialPoison, on 05/29/2008, -2/+6RI eh eh?
(sorry) - lesty420, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4If you live in Canada you can sign this petition. It has almost 14,000 signatures:

- tdogg241, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3We could definitely use a few of those in the US. Think Obama could be persuaded to get Greg Graffin to be his VP?

- GregR, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Nice to see someone doing something to try and curb Canada's rush to be a police state just like south of the 49th.
- ArchieAndrews, on 05/29/2008, -1/+3I figured for sure it would have been Joe Keithley.
- Hodor, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2I was there too; busy day!
backbenchers are the only ones who will bring this to light, everyone else is worried with all the scandals going on recently. - thall, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2My sarcasm detector's broken at the moment, so this is a response to anyone who seriously feels that service providers deserve such right.
If I applied for government assistance to lay down new coax across canada (like the earlier cable companies did) do you think I'd receive it? No, I wouldn't.
These service providers were given a government hand to get where they are today, it's only fair that government has authority to keep the resulting service in check, in as far as regulating the public access to it. - kvzuky, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2He used to play in L'Étranger.

saveournet.ca - DirtPile, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1I'm lost in the Internet. I can no longer surf happily. ....if this bill doesn't pass
- thall, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Awesome....
While I know there are some downsides to having a minority government, it certainly keeps them on their toes, giving a little more power back to the voters. Majority government, in this context, behave more like a corporate monopoly: once they've shaken off the competition it's no more Mr. Nice Guy and customer service dies off. - arobicha, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Let me put it this way, let's say there was this reporter working for a newpaper who found this story and wrote a wonderful article on it, only to be overshadowed by some ***** who slapped a pair of ***** on the correspondent list on FOX. Even if the FOX news reporter reported the story in his own words PRECICELY the same way that the small time reporter would do it, the small time reporter goes unnoticed. If the small time reporter presents the story but nobody cares, but then FOX covers it, and starts complete utter mayhem, then why have the small time reporters? And who decided that whatever ***** FOX decides to spew out is scripture regardless of it's crap-content?
I don't care who submits the story, because I don't read the articles that don't appeal to me, but Digg isn't my only source of news, entertainment... You have to look for the ***** that FOX doesn't report. It's not gold because mrbabyman says so, so why digg him up preferentially? - rheaume, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Punk rocker sells newspaper and gets web hits
- cnosal, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I did my part and became a supporter of saveournet.ca
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Because it was comedy gold! The whole setup, describing my mental process from rage to apologetic, followed by the finale of the apology itself. You can't buy that type of *****, and I'm giving it away for free! So, in summary, you're welcome.
- happytedium, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Shooter McGavin in SLC Punk.
:D - bawheid, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1I tried, I really tried to do the right thing and save our web thingy. But it's doomed, here's why; I dutifully went to saveournet.ca and tried to sign on. Did I just catch dyslexia or is this *****?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/89596780@N00/25355931 ... - HonoredMule, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Simple solution...don't be the kind of sheep that follows FOX, and if you're the reporter, don't expect personal glory or gain. The people who actually pay attention to the world around them and think for themselves will always be rare, and will need to seek each other out in order to make a difference. It's just the way things are, unfortunately.
- ostracize, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1@thall
What are the downsides of a minority government? - Deodrus, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1I just added my name and information to the petition. Hoping for more people to do the same.
Come on Canadians. Let's get this bill passed. - inactive, on 05/29/2008, -1/+1So is this going to have the same impact as the government intervention on the Canadian Health System? If so, they might want to think twice.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+1MRBABYMAN DOESN'T SUPPORT TEH TROOPS buried for being a librul!
- bitterbug, on 05/30/2008, -1/+1If the Conservative party called me and asked if they had my support, I'd simply tell them "No, I don't vote Republican." and hang up on the scumbags.
- logandurand, on 05/29/2008, -2/+1Of course it is, it takes away the rights of the service providers.

What is Digg?
