wait, what? - tomgoguen, on 10/20/2008, -1/+5Basic human right is an obvious exaggeration but NB has traditionally shown great vision for and has had a history of advanced telecoms deployments at least until NBTel was disbanded. Telecoms and now the Internet provide significant economic growth opportunities especially for rural commodities-based economies like NB's.
This call for universal low-cost access to broadband Internet services is akin to Louis Robichaud's call for universal access to quality education for all the children of NB from which myself and many of my contemporaries benefited and should not be discounted as a cheap political stunt. Its not a "Liberal" or "Conservative" thing, its common sense for community leaders to promote things that are proven to deliver economic growth. - lacronicus, on 10/20/2008, -1/+4The internet is quickly becoming much more than just a collection of novice websites; it's quickly becoming the best source for news, and with many paper publications switching to online only, and many more sure to come, I'd say it's as much a right as having access to the local newspaper.
Unfortunately, that still doesn't really make it a human right. Just because someone has the right to own a gun/say what they want/etc, doesn't mean someone else should be forced to sell one to them/listen to them/etc.
Requiring a private company to extend their service to a location they don't want to extend their network to is nothing more than government controlled industry, which, to this extent at least, isn't something I support. - forthex, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1***** ROGERS!
- thall, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1WiMAX is out there as well, which is a broadband wireless modem joining a home PC to a cell phone network but at faster-than-cell-internet speeds. If more cell network providers were to jump into this market then it would also help lower internet access fees for rural areas.

big difference. the canadian middle is nowhere near conservative. this guy is far more progressive than he is conservative. what kind of term is progressive conservative anyways? its an oxymoron (with Jack Carr just being a moron) - reaper527, on 10/20/2008, -7/+1broadband internet access isn't a basic human right. what is with these people who are off the deep end liberal?
