- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -6/+347“Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted,” Noël St-Hilaire, head of copyright theft investigations of the Canadian police, said in an interview with Le Devoir. “It is too easy to copy these days and we do not know how to stop it,” he added.
They admit defeat, at least for the time being. I send kudos to the CRIA and Canadian Police for being the first to figure out that you can't kill a hydra. - thatcrazycommie, on 11/14/2007, -20/+311I don't understand how this is not getting more Diggs, it is huge ***** news. FILE SHARING HAS JUST BEEN EFFECTIVELY LEGALIZED IN CANADA.
- Clearz, on 11/14/2007, -2/+165Wow, a police service who stands up for its population instead of the intrests of the coperations. Who would have thought?
- perestroika, on 11/13/2007, -5/+154What the hell is "Canadian Police"? Did every single police department in Canada all of the sudden agree on this? Are they talking about the RCMP?
- SilverBlade2k, on 11/14/2007, -2/+132Finally someone who thinks logically. Go after the real criminals....
- MalDON, on 11/14/2007, -4/+110That's it. Now I'm moving. Tomorrow too. Bye bye America.
- ch1ck3n, on 11/13/2007, -6/+108Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. - cuj0, on 11/14/2007, -4/+100time to move to Canada
- RogerStrong, on 11/13/2007, -6/+99That's because it's old news, and not very accurate.
Trading music with friends and family is legal in Canada, and has been for a few years. This is specifically spelled out in the copyright act. In return we pay a tax on recordable media that goes to the artists.
But there are limits on this. It applies only to music. And of course you can't make money off the music, play it in public performances, or publish it. Downloading music is a bit of a grey area, but probably OK for the moment. Uploading - like sharing on a P2P network - is publishing, thus illegal. - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+75Then let's call it "ninjacy". You stole it so fast the victim still has the copy in his hands.
- combas3d, on 05/30/2009, -4/+72..and once again I get to say: Thank goodness I'm Canadian!
- SilverBlade2k, on 11/12/2007, -4/+69Pot has nothing to do with piracy..
- thedarkrabbit, on 11/12/2007, -3/+61Y'know, I was up in the air about where to move... But NOT NOW!
OH, CANADA!!!! (I don't know the rest of the song... sorry) - deathmatch, on 11/13/2007, -2/+53I love this place
- draebor, on 11/14/2007, -3/+53Seriously, dude... America is a sinking ship. I'm surprised all the wildlife isn't fleeing.
- PorcupineTree, on 11/13/2007, -12/+62I like turtles.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/13/2007, -1/+49“Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted,”

Glad to be Canadian. - draebor, on 11/14/2007, -3/+47Man, I SO love living in Canada.
- MasterThief117, on 11/12/2007, -5/+45OK, lets see: Leader who is not a complete douche, check. Stronger economy than the US, check. Free health-care, check. Police who don't arrest you for downloading that movie or song, check. Wow. Canada is starting to tempt me.
- SuperMoses, on 11/13/2007, -0/+38Yes, they took out the R and M in RCMP
- shakin, on 11/12/2007, -1/+38Ninjacy is awesome. You are going to be as well known as the guy who invented the term podcast. You know, that guy who has a blog. I can't remember his name at the moment, but you'll be just as famous as he is.
- rome747, on 11/13/2007, -3/+37Why does Canada have to be so awesome?
- windmillninja, on 11/13/2007, -36/+69Just playing devil's advocate here: What about someone who grows marijuana just for personal use?
- realclark, on 11/12/2007, -0/+32you can stay in my basement if you want
- MalDON, on 11/13/2007, -0/+32In case you think I'm joking, you're so wrong. I'm packing right now. I have relatives in Vancouver and they said I could stay while I find a place to settle down in.
- GodIsntReal, on 11/12/2007, -5/+34***** awesome. No more worrying about getting caught.
- Sniper, on 11/12/2007, -1/+30Welcome to Canada, eh!
- Coldkill, on 11/12/2007, -0/+28creepy
- ragingradish, on 11/13/2007, -2/+29Well, you're almost there. Although Mr. Harper is not a complete douche, he is, at the very least, approximately 75% douche and therefore on par with pretty well every other politician out there, regardless of the country.
- judolphin, on 11/13/2007, -3/+29It's nice to see that someone has a common sense approach to copyright law. Go after hard, organized (real) crime, not old ladies whose granddaughters downloaded a handful of MP3s while using their computer.
- vulcanx, on 11/13/2007, -3/+28holy ***** moving to canada
- Jawsh91, on 11/12/2007, -3/+26You're not playing the devil's advocate.
- ch1ck3n, on 11/13/2007, -0/+22Actually uploading/publishing is legal.
http://www.news.com/2100-1027_3-5182641.html
"update Sharing copyrighted works on peer-to-peer networks is legal in Canada, a federal judge ruled on Wednesday, handing the record industry a sharp setback in its international fight against file swappers. "

"under certain conditions both downloading and uploading are legal" - acidbass, on 11/12/2007, -1/+23combine the fact that global warming is turning the not-to-distant future of canada's climate into the climate america has now,
id say they can make their slogan:
"Canada: like America v2.0 - Better govt, better way of life and we promise not to blow up the whole world and spy on you in the process." - Typhuse, on 11/12/2007, -5/+27Cheers to Canada!!!!
They aren't too arrogant to admit they can't stop piracy, unlike some..
*cough*U.S.*cough* - rstarr, on 11/11/2007, -3/+23Oooo, sorry, close.
The correct answer is "What is burn it's bloody stumps?"
Very close though. - Zedtech, on 11/12/2007, -2/+21American Points? Given the current exchange isnt that only like 18 Canadian Points?
You may want to aim a little higher... - mhoyer, on 11/13/2007, -1/+20Yet Demonoid is down because Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened to sue them. So I wouldn't say all of Canada 'legalized' file sharing. Demonoid down is pretty serious.
- PorcupineTree, on 11/11/2007, -2/+21I'm not even going to say it...
- D3koy, on 11/13/2007, -3/+21There is a difference between RIAA/MPAA and the police....
- capiCrimm, on 11/12/2007, -1/+19sure you can, you just need a firebrand.
- Treshnell, on 11/12/2007, -4/+21Yet another reason to move to Canada...
I hope America can get with the times... - bigbadgoat, on 11/13/2007, -0/+17we wont put up the fence till we know the stanley cup is north of the border.
- M4v3rIC, on 11/13/2007, -0/+16Thats exactly what they mean. They do not care about personal use file sharing, they haven't for a LONG time. As long as I can remember. They want to be after the people who share thousands of songs, not single mothers with children like the RIAA.
- PhoenixTril, on 11/12/2007, -0/+16From TFA in french: "Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC)" = Literally "Police Royal of Canada", or in other words, the RCMP.
- itseffinkasey, on 11/12/2007, -1/+16Yeah this is amazing... its like a government for the people? Do they have those these days?
- rjam710, on 11/12/2007, -0/+15***** the CRIA, demonoid's still down =(
- GregR, on 11/12/2007, -2/+17"I send kudos to the CRIA and Canadian Police for being the first to figure out that you can't kill a hydra."
Yes, now if we can get all the money that has been collected as "taxes" on the sales of CDs and MP3 players out of the hands of the real pirates (e.g. music industry) and into the hands of the real owners (artists) where the money was supposed to go in the first place! As I understand it, not one penny of that money has gone were it belongs! -
