- tehbored, on 11/29/2007, -6/+128It probably won't pass. Endorsing a bill like that is political suicide.
- Chinnydaisy, on 02/23/2008, -6/+109Over my dead body, I will resurrect the Persian army and shoot a thousand arrows that will blot out the sun on parliament hill before this ***** goes down.
- geminitojanus, on 11/29/2007, -4/+95I guess this puts an end to all of those "That's it, I'm moving to Canada" jokes...
How's Norway this time of year? - simplistics06, on 11/29/2007, -3/+71GET YOUR ***** AMERICANS OUT OF OUR POLITICS
- TritonX, on 11/29/2007, -1/+67Lol, If that ever get passed, someone is going to get hurt, and it ain't going to be the hackers...

- Heterochromia, on 11/29/2007, -2/+58I think we should all write Miss Bev Oda a letter. I'm going to get mine started tonight.
Anyone have a petition going yet? America's going downhill thanks to it's choices - so why are we anchoring ourselves on to that sinking ship? - tehbored, on 11/29/2007, -3/+48FTA:
"But there's hope. The last two Ministers who tried to push through a US-style copyright bill in Canada lost their jobs, thanks in large part to Canada's coalition of artists, educators, archivists, and public-interest activists. Selling Canada's digital future out to a handful of US companies is a bad career move for Canadian politicians." - Animal, on 11/29/2007, -0/+44They'll just make these stupid laws in the shade.
- Topher06, on 11/29/2007, -5/+48Yeah, the Canadian government ***** it up whenever they get the chance, I am surprised it has taken so long for it to happen with digital copyrights. Remember that these are the people (unfortunatly my government) that slapped a tarrif on 3.5" floppy disks because of their potential to be used to copy music files.
- Hoxie, on 11/29/2007, -2/+34This is blashphemy, this is madness!
No, this is piracy! - Emachine, on 11/29/2007, -3/+34***** the DMCA!

- TeacherOfHeroes, on 11/29/2007, -0/+26Hello,
I recently read an article by Michael Geist, the Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa, concerning a new bill set to be introduced in the next few weeks concerning Canadian copyright. The article can be found at: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/2419/125/ I encourage you to read the article, as it presents the case against this legislation much more articulately than I am able to.
I am strongly opposed to the idea of a law that does not allow users to create personal backups of content, to modify content for personal use, or shift content formats for use on a variety of devices. Under this new law, it would be illegal to make a computer backup of a copy-protected DVD to watch on one's own computer without needing the DVD in the drive, or to make a backup in case the original becomes scratched or damaged. It would also be illegal to convert a song purchased on iTunes to a format that could play on an mp3 player made by Creative or Microsoft or by anyone except Apple.
These are egregious infringements upon the rights of consumers to enjoy media that they have purchased in a manner of their choosing, and I hope that you will vote against any legislation that would prevent users from exercising these rights.
Sincerely,
[NAME] - inactive, on 11/29/2007, -5/+28Time to vote out the neocon who goes by the name Stephen Harper.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+22This is a complete waste of time for it even to be considered. If this bill passes Canadians will not be able to use email or make phone calls for that matter without copyright infringement. This is just begging for thousands and thousands of unnecessary court cases to trials that have already been decided.
Why doesn't DRM do something intelligent and hire some intelligent programmers, instead of lawyers, to protect their profits. - barc0001, on 11/29/2007, -0/+21Yes, but this is Canada. The last two people who tried to pass less psycho versions of that bill both lost their seats. Up here we send messages when we find politicians in the pocket of the recording industry. And that message the last couple of times has been "You're fired. Get out." Additionally, this is going on with a minority government, they won't put ANYTHING in front of the HoC unless it's going to pass with support from all parties, and you can be damn sure I'm lighting my MP up on this one and telling him if he votes for it, I'll make it my mission to let his riding know that he wants little kids and grandmas to go to jail over downloaded music(don't know if that's in the bill or not, but who cares. Say it often enough and it'll take on a life of its own). The Libs and NDP will not touch it with a 10 foot pole. PQ is a wildcard, though.
- Speed, on 11/29/2007, -1/+22The Bloc will vote against it just for the simple reason that it has nothing to do with Quebec Sovereignty.
- Xyleene, on 11/29/2007, -0/+21I can't wait till these bums get voted out...
- TsarDusan, on 11/29/2007, -1/+20I'm gonna take to the streets here in Toronto if this type of crap ever gets passed
- inobla, on 11/29/2007, -0/+19"It will contain an "anti-circumvention" clause that prohibits breaking the locks off your music and movies in order to move them to new devices or watch them after the company that made them goes out of business"
F--- you! If the company goes out of business, and I've already bought their product... they can kiss my ass. I'm still watching the movie or listening to the music.
If my home manufacturer goes out of business am I supposed to then demolish my house? So ridiculous, good luck enforcing such nonsense. - spyd3rweb, on 11/29/2007, -2/+20Some would say that about the Patriot Act.
- Cam_86, on 11/29/2007, -1/+17I'm half a block away from my local MP's local office... I might talk about it with someone there tomorrow(back benching liberal).
Though honestly, the only party that WOULD support this, by ideology, are the conservatives... Canadians as a whole wouldnt, and all the biggest artists here are pretty much opposed to this. I bet the liberals and NDP could get a great attack ad if somehow this passed, since it ONLY seems to cater to the major american labels. Even the CRIA has not gone on record to ask for legislation this tough. - Zeegs, on 11/29/2007, -0/+15We've been having some taser trouble up here too.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/16/world/americas/1 ... - Uranium118, on 11/29/2007, -2/+17It will not pass. Even IF it passes, it will only be a pain in the butt for legit customers. You will find all the same good ol' pirated stuff on the internet if you know where to look.
- krische, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14Geez, just when I started to get tempted by their public health care and lack of tasering; they go and try something like this. :(
- Adelhas, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14The liberals better grow a ***** spine and stop this one even it means an election!
- RandomGorilla, on 11/29/2007, -1/+14Way to follow a trend, Canada. Seems that Neocons are like ebola. Any democratic nation in contact with the US catches them. The virus then tries all it can to kill the host by melting it from the inside out.
- RoboDonut, on 11/29/2007, -1/+14Haha, that's awesome.
Maybe I should move to Canada. At least they care about their digital media.
The US DMCA is a poorly-written mess that makes everyone into a criminal. - JoelBakan01, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13 Bowmanville Office:

Email: Oda.B@parl.gc.ca [it is best to write a letter though] - vemerge, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13I've written to my MP about this. Have yet to receive a reply, so we'll see what he says.
- Bamborzled, on 11/29/2007, -0/+12Minority government for the win. Most likely the Liberals, the NDP, and perhaps even the Bloc will vote this bill out.
- Animal, on 11/29/2007, -0/+12Online petitions are pretty pointless compared to an actual letter writing campaign. Stick with your letter and urge others to do the same.
- Jo9100, on 11/29/2007, -1/+12Canadians, contact your MP, send them a letter:

http://www.easypost.ca/ - Urusai, on 11/29/2007, -2/+13That and the tasings up north are making me wonder if sacrificing decent weather is worth the move.
- CraigCarlyle, on 11/29/2007, -1/+12"This will be even worse than the last Canadian copyright proposal, the defeated Bill C-60."
Gee, I wonder why that failed? - Scruffydan, on 11/29/2007, -0/+11Both the Conservatives (currently in power with a minority government)and the Liberals (The opposition party) have worked for this kind of copyright reform fro quite some time, and will both probably vote for it.
Also keep in mind that copyright reform was mentioned in the throne speech, thus making it a confidence motion. If it doesn't pass it could trigger an election, and the Liberals are nowhere near ready to fight an election. So all the more reason for them to vote for it.
Contact your MPs Let them know that you don't support such a copyright bill. Demand balanced copyright reform! - Cam_86, on 11/29/2007, -1/+11Dunno why he's being dug down... It isn't really a secret he's the 'neo-con' type... He once gave a speech in America about how Canada was essentially an 'ambition-less wasteland' and was one of the most out-spoken opponents of Chretien standing up against bush over the Iraq war. If he had had it his way, Canada would be in the same mess the Brits and Australians are in now.
- Animal, on 11/29/2007, -0/+10That's the sad problem is that if it does get passed, those of us who are heavy media consumers who want to be honest about their usage will be forced to turn to piracy.
- DavidGX, on 11/29/2007, -0/+10I sure hope you guys (Canadians) can kill this. This is the exact opposite of the way things should be going for all countries.
- PFS1, on 11/29/2007, -0/+10"If this law passes, it will mean that as soon as a device has any anti-copying stuff in it (say, a Vista PC, a set-top cable box, a console, an iPod, a Kindle, etc), it will be illegal for Canadians to modify it, improve it, or make products that interact with it unless they have permission from the (almost always US-based) manufacturer."
That's pretty ***** broad. If that is correct, it wouldn't even be legal to use gtkpod or winamp with to manage ipod, as it involves interfacing (in a way the manufacturer didn't intend) with a device that can protect music tracks. - crossmr, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9Why? She's not heritage minister anymore.
http://www.pch.gc.ca/pc-ch/min/index_e.cfm - Speed, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9But Canada isn't quite in the pockets of the CRIA as much as the US is for the RIAA. Jack Layton def. will vote against this, and Dion doesn't need anymore reason for us to hate him.
- Pthalio, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9Stop stealing our talented Canadians :P
- insllvn, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9Is it the consumers? I bet it is the consumers.
- crossmr, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9no, she's not, http://www.pch.gc.ca/pc-ch/min/index_e.cfm
she was dumped a while ago. - LargeTrout, on 11/29/2007, -0/+9It's never the pirates who get hurt because they just do what they always do; circumnavigate the rules. It's the consumer who gets hurt, every single time.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+8Until the arrows come down...then they are *****.
- protium, on 11/29/2007, -0/+8Yey! "Democracy", Capitalism/Corporatism will ultimately destroy democracy. I'm sure most of the Canadian people would be against this, but politicians are always persuaded by the mighty dollar (Canadian dollar), unfortunately this is true around the world.
