- j0hneb0y81, on 10/10/2007, -9/+101is there really any car made anymore that *CAN'T* do at least 100mph??
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+92104 sent shudders down your spine -- you wuss.
- dtd00d, on 10/10/2007, -3/+78When I'm on the highway I like to hit the KPH/MPH button so I feel cooler.
- blueshoo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+70must've been trying to escape kathy griffin
- BassJunkie, on 10/10/2007, -6/+64Being a prius owner (stop laughing) I can confirm the car is capable of 104mph :-) NOT that i condone that sort of driving and if you find a hill you *might* go a bit over that..........say 110 :-)
- yankpats, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46Didn't Al Gore's kid hit around 120 in one of those all stoned out of his mind? Or was it I who was stoned out of my mind?
- gameforge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37He hit 105, one more mile per hour, according to TFA which you did not R.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34104 is nothing. For anyone who ever drove a car at least.
- irieKEN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Most people don't bother to have their tires balanced... 104 is some scary ***** when the car starts shaking like a scared poodle:P
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25As a sportbike enthusiast, doing a hundred miles an hour in a large, metal, crash-rated, 4-wheeled safety cage doesn't seem like that much of a nail-biter to me...
- johnboyholmes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21err wind resistance and drag increase exponentially with speed. Gears usually are not the limiting factor.
- flamingmb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Didn't he talk about this along time ago on diggnation? He uses his green laser pointer to make people get out of his way by flashing it in their rearview mirrors.
- mattabb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I will be more impressed if he can get his Segway's up to 100mph! ;-)
- bossm4n, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18So if you're constantly stomping on the gas and driving at those speeds, I'm guessing efficiency goes out the window. At that point, why the hell do you even drive a Prius?
- Rabbethan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Wow, I thought that was just me.
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I think i sense some smug on this page.
- SnotRag, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Any car will top the 100MPH mark, if you drop it down a mine shaft
- bffoley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13My father had a Ford Taurus (I think '94?) whose entire dashboard would shake violently when you hit 80MPH. I didnt dare try to go to 100 MPH in that thing.
- irieKEN, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I don't understand the digg community's giddiness over a Prius exceeding 100MPH... This isn't 1920; a 1.5L 1993 civic can easily exceed 100MPH with its meager 95HP. If your tires are balanced, you might not even notice the speed.
Can we go back to finding easier ways of hacking over 100 miles per gallon out of the Prius? That would make me giddy:) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Geo Metro?
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17What are the tires rated at? Let me know how well all that battery mass does when the tires un-ply at 104 mph and you quickly get reminded of f = m(a)
- Lamtd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Actually, no. It's only a 76hp 1.5L 16v engine. Moreover, the electric motor is used in conjunction of the gasoline engine even at high speeds, for a combined 110 horsepower.
So once the electric engine runs out of power, good luck trying to reach those 130mph ! - bigtomrodney, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18It's still a 1.8l Toyota engine once you go over 40mph,so I wouldn#'t be surprised if it could do 130mph. It only uses the electric motor at low speeds.
- protogenxl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Fast Cars = Prius
Hot Women = Kathy Griffin
Steve What the Hell? - SuperCujo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11If you hit anything, in any road car at 104 MPH, you will die.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -11/+22There are only two types of people that will drive a Prius. Fat chicks and you.
- 44Bigs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Oh come on.. every decent car can do 104mph. Even my '92 Ford Orion did 120mph (although my '07 Fiat Panda will have a hard time getting there).
But I guess it's fast when the top speed is 50 or 60 mph. When you're allowed to drive 80mph, like here in most parts of Europe, 104 isn't that exciting all of a sudden :) - senfo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It also depends on the car. My first car was a piece of crap 1991 Geo Prism and I was scared to take that thing to 85 MPH on the highway. The suspension just wasn't designed for speeds much higher than 65-70 MPH.
- cawpin, on 11/12/2007, -1/+11It actually gets a legit 45 but I agree. My 1996 Geo Metro got that regularly though and it only cost $10k.
- ozborn, on 11/12/2007, -5/+15It's not 12 seconds, it's about 10 on all 2004+ models. Dugg down for inaccuracy.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -16/+26Too bad it goes from 0 to 60 in 12 seconds because it's hauling around two engines and a bigass battery.
- TheMrFlibble, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Er Me too
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12You also look at -LEAST- 104 times cooler on a bike than in a Prius.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Did Wozniak try to prank the cop that pulled him over?
- gibler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Heh you would be charged with dangerous driving where I live and automatically lose your licence for 28 days.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10104 going down hill with the wind behind him.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The fastest I've been was 153MPH in a friends GTO. He let go of the steering wheel going that fast and it was smooth as silk. I kid you not. That car is ***** great.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8yeah, but it took it 30 minutes to get up to that speed
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14Yawn, they're still ***** cars.
- t0ken, on 11/12/2007, -1/+9"you spent $25,000 to save $5 a week" - I don't understand your logic here... are you saying that they bought the car to save money vs. walking or public transportation, or are you claiming that the Prius costs $25,000 more than a comparable standard-engined car?
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Probably a few, but not many. Smart Fortwo?
(Damnit, dugg you down accidentally.) - mogus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Like when people hit the lbs/kg button on the scale at the gym to feel better about themselves?
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -5/+12You are aware that the prius only gets like 35mpg, right? More weight means more friction means more fuel spent getting the ***** thing to move.
Nice try though, next time don't believe the hype and do some research. - brufleth, on 11/12/2007, -6/+13Go learn about the batteries in the Prius. They're pretty much entirely recyclable. You probably do more to hurt the environment via batteries in your wall clocks and remote controls in a year than the Prius batteries will.
- Krystar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8So is this.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Then gives them the anti-airport-security/razor sharp/ stainless steel business cards?
- dougmc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+720 years ago, I got my Rabbit Diesel up to 94 mph. This was done a long, steep hill with a tailwind. Under normal conditions -- flat road, no tailwind -- the top speed really was about 75-80 mph. You just can't go any faster, no matter how long you keep it floored.
I used to hate that car, just for being gutless (0 to 60 mph in 45 seconds. Seriously.) Now, I wish I had it again -- because it could get 50 mph if you drove it right, and 40 mph if you didn't. And I could fix most things on it myself -- and I never was much of a mechanic.
As for air resistance, it's the main form of drag once you some speed. And it's porportional to your speed -- double your speed, double the air resistance. Which means that the power required quadruples -- so if going 60 mph requires 50 hp, going 90 mph requires 113 hp. Again, this ignores rolling resistance and such, but once you get a reasonable speed, those are very small. - irieKEN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Because his other car is a Hummer (FTA):P
- krnldmp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Getting caught going over 80 mph in a vehicle specifically designed for efficiency is a sad mix of hypocrisy and stupidity, even if it means you simply selected the wrong car to drive for the day. At constant balls-out output, a simple manual transmission on a regular IC engine is more efficient than the hybrid configuration. So, if you leave the driveway planning on lots of speed, bring the sport car instead. Even if you don't crash and eat a quarter ton of batteries you wont unwittingly disparage other Prius drivers, which could be a serious problem at this stage of the game. As it is, some people already like to make fun of them just for trying.
- SnotRag, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Like standing still, on a train doing 104MPH
