- austin63, on 11/01/2007, -0/+29Too good to be true.
- Bawk, on 10/31/2007, -0/+26Whatever takes money out of Comcast's pockets I will digg.
- XtremeDBA, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14It's about time. I don't even want cable television at my residence but is bundled in with my rent.
- implied, on 10/31/2007, -0/+12***** yea for FIOS.
- Error601, on 11/01/2007, -0/+11That sounds like a good plan especially with the telcos getting in the business.
- HMTKSteve, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10This is awesome news!
What I like to do is contrast what the cable companies are saying now about telcos entering the video market with what they said in '96 when they entered the telephone market. - monarch00, on 11/01/2007, -1/+9I'd rather be paying rent than dealing with mortgage companies right now. There was an article in the WSJ several months ago that detailed how it's actually cheaper right now to rent than to be paying a mortgage.
It's hard to build equity when it's all being washed away by a collapsing market. - kmusser, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8Regardless shouldn't we have the right to choose which provider we want? Number of channels be damned all I really want is a select few, and what if a particular company has say HBO for cheaper, shouldn't I be able to choose to pay less?
- AriaStar, on 10/31/2007, -1/+9Good. Maybe then I can get cable TV again. No way in hell will I give money to Comcast, which is the company with the lock on my complex.
- cgilroy, on 10/30/2007, -0/+7I know most landlords do not like dish's placed on their buildings, but technically it is against the law for a landlord to refuse you permission to get a dish installed. Its the OTARD law. :-D
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5Great move. Though i've been seeing more and more apartment complexes start offering alternatives other than cable. The apartment complex i grew up in now has FiOS, DSL, Cable, and even Satellite for TV.
- GabrielS, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5False. Your rent includes the cost of the pay television. It's just so small, about $5 per unit, that it's practically free.
- buuch, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5My last complex was T1...
- GabrielS, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5This isn't true. Some apartment complexes do not permit tenants to install external equipment such as sat dishes.
- TheSabre, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Sure, it's cheaper up front each month. But you get absolutely no ROI when you rent.
- nrose101, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4Sweet! This means the comcast cable I pay for but never use since I have directv will be out of my HOA fees!!!!
- GabrielS, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4Expect law suits from the Cable ops to block enforcement.
The building owners may also file suits. - GabrielS, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5Sports dude. Sports in HD dude.
- schnikies79, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4There is nothing to deal with if you have a fixed rate mortgage. You make your payments and then own it in a few years.
People with ARM's are the one's having the issues. - pcp777, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Does this help home owners? It would be nice to be able to choose from a selection of cable broad band providers.
- samdu, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3You've never NOT been able to get DSL in an apartment complex. The only time that it wouldn't be available would be if the phone company didn't have a CO close enough.
- ibeetle, on 10/31/2007, -2/+5@robwikens
First cable does not have the most HD channels available. Satellite then FiOS TV then cable.
Secondly, cable's HD television is highly suspect as they got to pick what is defined as high definition. Right now it is unconverted 480p. Due to the limited bandwidth of cable the only way you will see 1080 (i or p) is if they took about a third of their channels down. That is never going to happen. You might one day see the big channels such as the Networks and HBO, etc. broadcast in native 720p but that will not be until at least 2009 and even then only in major markets.
Unfortunately, the cable industry is of the "more-is-better" mind set. Instead of giving the customer 100 channels of high quality picture and sound; we 300 channels of crap. - GabrielS, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I think its the bandwidth throttling effect. Comcast is getting a lot of hate on Digg for that boneheaded move.
- 3adkied, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2They can't do that. Go to http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html
The 3rd paragraph says it applies to rental areas where you have exclusive use (balconies, patios). If the management is (willfully?) ignorant, show them the federal regulation from the link. - harvinator24, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Sadly where ever you are in new york you are locked into one cable company.
- 3adkied, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Not sure what you mean by home owner. This applies to multi-dwelling units (MDU) which would include condo owners and renters alike. If you mean a single home, I don't think this would apply, but what sort of exclusive deal have you signed with a cable company for your house? If there just aren't choices available in your area, this won't help, but you have my sympathy. As someone who lives in an affected condo (MDU), it is unbelievably frustrating to have so many choices in my area for anyone else in the neighborhood, but I can't get the channels and services I want from any of them, simply because some board chose to sign away my rights for me.
- devtrash, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2go to fcc.gov and look it up. Dishes are allowed.
- devtrash, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2No. It's a Federal thing. Got fcc.gov and look it up.
- 3adkied, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2For all those above stating apartment rules don't allow it - the FCC has said these rules are not legal. If the want to prevent you from mounting them on your exclusive domain (your balcony, not a common area), they MUST give you easy access to the roof to mount a dish. The only exceptions are for safety, which shouldn't be a problem with proper mounting, and historical preservation areas, which are a small percentage of buildings. The info can be found here:
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html - sockpuppets, on 10/30/2007, -1/+3Mine was paranoia.
- ScornedPatriot, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I think what he means is that there is "broadband" but the ping on satellite is atrocious, which makes gaming stink.
- schnikies79, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2You can watch sports, specifically football, live, every sunday?
Sorry, I'll stick to my dish. - devtrash, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2and that language is unenforceable. Really. Go to the fcc.gov.
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Yea i agree, I think everyone would like that, renters and owners alike. Having no selection or competition in cable broad band really sucks. We used to pay 45 dollars for optimum online basic able service, thats with the discount for having family cable.
- Ratteler, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Actually, none of the provider in my area in NYC offer Broadband over satellite.
- ccheath, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1there's this complex in my city that has an exclusive arrangement with the dish network... or maybe it's direct tv
i never lived there, but knew people who did
this news means that it should work both ways and that complex will have to let cable in right? - 3adkied, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Besides the aforementioned sports, what about the option you suggested yourself - cancel the cable service. Since my building has an exclusive cable contract, I CAN'T CANCEL!
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2Yea i know but i was just outlining the choices we have now a days. Cable was definitely offered before DSL service and for a while DSL service wasn't available in our apartment complex because they put Urban housing districts as priority because that was their major market. The biggest addition is the option for Satellite and my parents current apartment complex you're able to get TV service from telcos as well.
- Ratteler, on 10/31/2007, -2/+3Satellite is no option to cable. No Broadband.
- insomniac8400, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Are they going to force apartment complexes to let tenants have any kind of wiring installed? This is meaningless if the complex is wired with a satellite carrier, and doesn't have cable or has copper phone lines and isn't wired with fiber. And how much is it going to cost an apartment tenant to pay to have a wiring installed?
- blackmage439, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2My complex has a choice between WOW (Wide Open West) and Comcast. Guess which one I went with? I have all the mainstream channels that Comcast has in their 2nd tier digital package, and 2Mbps/~365Kbps Internet, both for the price of digital cable with Comcast, with that price guaranteed until 2010. Wham, bam, screw you Comcast.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1This would be great.
The city where I live has an exclusive contract with "***** Cable" that expires in 2013!
I get cheap cable, but the signal is utter crap and payment is mandatory. - rowlodge, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1can see a bunch of dishes sticking out over balconies in tulsa. but its no "new york" either.
- Ratteler, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1You're lucky. Some states actually force them to fight for territory, but in all the big markets the cable companies have a deal with State government serve regions without competition from another cable provider.
In New York, you have places where if you move to the other side of the street, you have to change cable companies because you entered another service zone. Time Warner and Cablevision NEVER have to compete for customers in those markets, and no one else can come in to challenge them except Satellite or Phone, which is currently a very different kind of service. - devtrash, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1People who can use Google, will know that Dishes are not illegal.
- clothmonkey, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1They only support it because there is something in the pot for them if this goes through. Watch them backpedal a few years from now, just you wait.
- charlah, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2Funny how everyone is excited about this because it means they can leave Comcast...I'm excited because it might mean I can leave Charter FOR Comcast.
(used to have comcast and it was bad. but this has been a whole new level.) - Kenzan, on 10/31/2007, -1/+2Or, you could just try reading a book.
- Ratteler, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Yup. And what is allowing them NOT to compete in the same territory?
- Solstice, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Doesn't help a lot of people on digg. Cable companies still have an exclusive lock on Mom's basement.
