- motang, on 10/12/2007, -5/+104It's a sad day. I was hoping this would turn out better that the rescuers would find James Kim alive.
Rest in peace. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+87Man, that took a tear from me when Tom almost started crying at the end.
- earlysound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67James was a great co-worker and a wonderful friend. CNET will not be the same without him.
But thank you to everyone who showed their support this past week. It means a lot to the people involved. I can't imagine what his family is going through, but I know his CNET and TechTV families are grieving.
Veronica, CNET - scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47I remember James Kim when I was searching for a good mp3 player and i would watch his video reviews on CNet.com. With his informative video I chose the Creative Zen Vision M. I appreciate his helpfulness for me getting my mp3 player and he will definently be missed.
- beboppin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42when i watched tom's piece, i thought he was doing such a good job keeping composed at first that he must not have known james very well at all, but the ending proved me wrong
it'll feel weird browsing cnet now - modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Man I'm choked up. This is really sad.
- burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38i was 100% percent sure he would be found alive.. damn
- bandomac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36They are a company with an existing workflow. They uploaded video within the confines of that workflow. I don't think we need to look any further than that. I call no foul.
- BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31RIP James
1971 - 2006 - Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29James Kim convinced me to buy Etymotics earbuds. The earbuds were ***** but the man was great. You will be missed James! Best wishes to his family, friends, and coworkers.
- Parmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29This is the first submission about the story that i could agree with digging. It didn't feel right to digg such bad news.
Thank you for submitting. Rest in peace James - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Yes, he will be missed.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Today has been such a bad day for me. I wake up to the news that my grandmother has passed, and then I have to see this. Not one of the better days.
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22People crying over a death isn't funny.
- TylerLavite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20RIP James... this is so sad. made a tear come to my eyes while watching this.
- darksofa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25No, but it was probably contractually obligated. Bureaucracy (and business) can be heartless. I don't think those ads say anything about the CNet crew themselves.
- pope7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Rip James. God bless his family in these troubling times.
- yonis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Kim was great reporter. He had a good sense of humor and looked like he was a very cool, lovable guy. I only wish I had seen more of his work and I feel like I've missed out.
Rest in peace, James. My thoughts are with your family. - h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I couldn't finish watching those videos, I got so choked up on the fact that in almost everyone he mentions his kids. RIP James, Penelope & Sabine are going to be nothing short of amazing when they grow up.
- BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18My deepest condolences.. any loss of life is both tragic and heartfelt.. :(~
- shannon30338, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17James did what a Man had to do and died with honor trying to save his wife and two children. After many days of staying put he had to take action to save his family and he left the safety of the car to find help. A brave thing to do. I have two kids and will aspire to be the Man that Mr. Kim was. Thank you for trying Mr. Kim.
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17God Bless!
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14RIP James.
Assuming it was true that he died shortly after they found him, at least he died knowing that his family is safe now. - ToddCamack, on 02/27/2009, -2/+14When you watch and listen to a personality for years like many of us -- myself included -- have James since his "TechTV" days and the person is taken away, it really IS like losing a member of one's family, although I really didn't know the man. I wish I DID.
God bless you, Mr. Kim. - halfgook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13touching. :'(
- yonis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Dude, just block him. He doesn't deserve the attention.
- Vizin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Same, I was imagining heartwarming pictures of him and his family reunited, and interviews about his experience after everything went back to normal.
Sometimes the world can be a sad place, but we have to make the best of the time we have. - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The thought of him trudging through the horrible weather and spending his last moments there makes me shiver...what a sad, horrible way to die.
- Balazs_Szanto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10James was a hero. May he rest in peace.
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Same here RIP James a fellow geek died trying to save his family, hes a hero in my book. Our thoughts are with your family :'(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Hopefully he will be remembered for more than just being a guy that liked technology. That sort of thing doesn't really matter in the end or when your life is in danger, but the fact that he was an incredible father should be remembered.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I just watched his review on the moby blue 2. I had to lol when he said not to lose the charger cord then threw it over his shoulder. It is horrible that he had to leave 2 young kids and a wife behind. :(
- ttkgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9He did what every family man should do, and what I would do in that scenario. Although it was the wrong thing to do in this case, he had sacrificed his own life to save his family. After almost a week of not doing anything, he took action. A true hero and family man.
I remember watching his stuff on TechTV reviewing printers, he use to always show his family. Rest in peace, James. - AlanKc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I haven't watched it yet..
After reading these comments I'm not sure I will.. I heard the news when I was in my car, and I literally had to pull over. I did not know him personally, but I have watched him from the TechTv days, And watched countless reviews on Cnet..
I just don't think I could take this video right now. I dugg it, but I believe ill watch it tomorrow..
Rest In Peace James Kim. You Will Be Missed By Many.. - hieuhef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7he waited for a week, dude. how can you ask a person with a family to stay put after a week? having been in 2 separate locations, he increased the chances of them being found, even if his outcome was more so grim because of the circumstances. i bet you would've done the same had it been your family on the line.
- michaelschmitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Vizin, I imagined and looked forward to the same interviews with James telling of his harrowing experience. My heart sank when I saw the headline announcing his death.
James was very intelligent, so he knew that going off to look for help was terribly risky. Yet his love for his family was far greater than and fear or concern for his own safety. When he could stand watching his family suffer no longer, he attempted to save them.
Watching the clips CNET has gathered to remember James, I was touched by how often he mentioned his family. I hope his sacrifice will bring many families closer this holiday season.
Thank you, James Kim, for your gentle spirit, courage, and example.
God rest your soul. - krypnos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@Bobski
Before assume he took his clothed off and died from exposure, which did happen, but for no apparent reason, the clothes were wet. Wet clothes in the wilderness == VERY bad. Not only do they suck the moisture out of your body, but they amplify the cold. I watch Survivor Man every once and a while, and he did say to remove wet clothes. Also, the clothes were organized to direct searchers in his direction, not a dumb move. He died for his family, nothing more can be asked of anyone.
RIP James Kim
Loved the man on Tech TV and CNet. - neladua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@chaskell
"It sucks, but in a situation where you know that others know that you are missing, the best thing to do is find the nearest clearing and wait for rescue."
The best thing to do if you want to be saved, but not the best thing if your overwhelming priority is having your family saved. They stayed where they were, so their chances of rescue were maximized -- and then (slightly) further increased by the risk that he took. Of course it's easy to say that he should have stayed put in retrospect, but there's definitely a logic (and courage, and love) in what he chose to do, too. - Roflman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Very sad to see such good people go.
R.I.P. James. - Dvoid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yea yea yea you're so very survival savvy. However... how long do you think rescuers would have taken to find his family if he had not left to find help?
He left clothes behind not because he's stupid but so rescuers could FIND HIS FAMILY. James Kim died saving his family and all you can do is bitch and whine about how he didn't follow the survival guide. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Maybe you should look at the past few days on digg and actually read the articles. Or even turn on msnbc.
- UglyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@lowballs
You're a ***** *****. - tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6James kim is the reason I bought my first ipod back on techtv. I think he helped alot of people over the years. He will be missed
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yep, you cant fault him for doing what he did. There were a lot of mistakes that lead up to the situtation, but leaving after 6 days to find help was not one of them.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I barely knew of the guy. I only watched his reviews on Fresh Gear and The ScreenSavers, and always thought how corny it was that he always reviewed a camera by taking pictures of his kids.
I'm not a big fan of CNet, between digg and Rev3 and Twit and DL.TV, which I'm sure are all mourning as we speak, I just didn't think it was necessary to start up another series of content to watch.
When I heard that the Kim family went missing I thought, "oh, that sucks" and shook it off. Over the next few days I began to obsess over their disappearance. At the time, there was no information on them whatsoever. I searched the wikipedia, google, cnet, digg, anything I could get my hands on. I even seriously considered buying a plane ticket and joining the search myself. When the family was found, I searched for coordinates on google earth so I could make a guess as to where James went, and where they could find him. It got to the point that I couldn't even focus in class because I kept thinking about James. When I learned that he had died, it was like I was floating on this disappointment and nervous imaginings of how he died, cold, and alone.
When I saw Tom's video, I too thought that he was very collected for someone in his position, but when I saw him lose it at the end, I cried for an hour. And not a slow and gentle sobbing, I mean I was balling like a toddler, snot bubbles and everything.
James pulled a Spock, and became a hero to his family and friends and fans. James has inspired me to act in the face of certain destruction and I will never forget his courage.
Rest In Peace, good sir. Sleep soundly. - twalker294, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He was a man who died trying to save his wife and kids. Isn't that enough?
- EuroMarkus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5
@lowballs, you're obviously baiting.
What a sad life you must have -- what a winner. - testerburner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Prayers and good thoughts......from one geek to another.
RIP. - dave98, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5RIP James.. you will be missed
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He had no way of even knowing for sure that people were looking for them, and if they were that they were anywhere close. He waited 6 days, going for help after that is a reasonable move.
You cant monday morning quarterback the call later, given what he knew at the time it was the right call. -
