CNET: CBS' YouTube, or Its Waterloo?
wired.com — With the deal, CBS says it will triple its interactive footprint and will become one of the top 10 biggest internet properties. While that all sounds very promising, CBS is acquiring a very troubled business. When they said in 2006 that they wanted to find "the next YouTube" to acquire, no one could have guessed that they meant CNET....

- socivitus, on 05/16/2008, -4/+9CNET is an incredible network, but it will in no way be as profitable as YouTube was for Google. I can see the network growing though.
- ElbertF, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6I believe Google has yet to make profit with Youtube? I'm sure they will though, and pretty soon (in-video ads etc.).
- KibibyteBrain, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Even if they never make direct profit off Youtube, it may already even be indirectly profitable through ensuring the dominance of Google's video search and its associated ads, as well as just increasing the number of hours spent on and the population of daily users of the internet. Basically, other internet services are Google's lifeblood, and what better way for Google to ensure they stick around than to run them itself?

- zspade, on 05/16/2008, -0/+10Not exactly what I would call a pillar of innovation at this point in the internets existance. I remember a day where CNET was one of the best resources out there, but it's not the 90's anymore.
- Darmichar, on 05/16/2008, -2/+22The fact that CBS looks at CNET as 'the next YouTube' shows just how out of touch they are with reality.
- Steinr, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8*sniff* Well that is the end of CNET, it was nice to have been with you while you were still free and to some degree independent. It is a pity to see great firms like this being at the receiving end of such an acquisition by a relatively non internet friendly corporate like CBS.
- paulringo, on 05/16/2008, -0/+13"We want some of that internet money!"
- YodaJones, on 05/16/2008, -1/+7CNET was sucking anyway. So now they will become like AOL and suck big time. No loss.
- radio1mike, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yeh, CBS made the wrongo move picking up CNET.
I really like CNET, but it is about 3 years past it's prime. The only thing I use for is download.com reviews of freeware that I am thinking about installing. - gkiltz, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1C-net is the worst "cookie polluter" on the whole net!
Some porn sites aren't as bad!
The only way out of their pop-up ads is to either use firefox, or start over on your system! - aenima987, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1i know i'm probably late, but new comment system :) it's way better than before
oh yeah sorry for being off topic - V1ncent, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2CNet's hasn't been a factor on the web for ages now. Congrats to their management for snowing CBS, though. Out of touch is an understatement.
- atarijedi, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I like CNET Reviews, thats it.
- harsesus, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0two tired spent giants... this reminds me of the sears k-mart merger... ha
- geofffox, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Maybe I'm missing something, but here's the real hidden value at CNET. Look at these URLs: Kids.com, Help.com, Computers.com, Download.com, Online.com, TV.com, Upload.com, News.com, Search.com, com.com, Builder.com, Gaming.com, Shopper.com, Marketplace.com, Updates.com, Store.com, Buying.com, Chat.com, Welcome.com, Browser.com, Shareware.com, Freeware.com, Auctions.com, Labs.com, Community.com, Silicon.com, Radio.com
- JamesWyatt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Mm Mmm. No Honey. It ain't C|NET unless it has Richard Hart, Daphne Brogdon, Desmond Crisis, Ryan Seacrest, & Hari Sreenivasan.
I hate change!! First C|Net, then The Site, Then The Screensavers... Grrrr... All I have now is G4.
Lewd "Attack of the Show", and Rockin "X-Play".. Bring Back the first Tech Boom!!
grumblegrumblegrumble... - Sketchee, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1It seems odd to even compare CNET to youtube. Cnet's video staff creates original content, they are more than just a distribution platform although they do have some deals that allow them to distribute other's video
