- rickbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9did anyone actually read this article. No where does it say that they are pulling out of google video.
what are you people on? - dwgranth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5wtf, you can only watch the episode for 24 hours after you PAY for it???? man CBS is lame
- Loudog121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Great so now every station will follow suit and we will have to install thier own software so we can view it which means that CBS which is owned mostly by Sony can install rootkits on even more machines. AWESOME!!!

"Google video is good for Funny Clips or Trailers but not TV Shows"
Google video is *good* for trailers?
Have you seen trailers.apple.com??? - Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No surprise there. Google video is a joke for a multi-billion dollar corporation.
- giggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"No surprise there. Google video is a joke for a multi-billion dollar corporation."
I Agree - Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is always BT.
- teradome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bad article title.
* The article does not say CBS is "pulling out" of Google Video.
* The article clearly frames this as CBS testing out paid downloads on their own, instead of relying on others like Google *or* iTunes. - CasadeMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Video is embarrassing. I don't work there and I am embarrassed for them!
- Radian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google video is crap. Glad to see someone (even if it's a big network) give them the single-finger salute.
- Abduladu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah come on CBS, just give in and make a deal with Apple for iTunes!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay for bittorrent
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lolllllllllllll what a ***** joke. it's already a stretch to pay 1.99 for a download of an episode, but for a 24 hour day pass?
DEAR CBS: LOL @ U - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as I like Google, Google Video is their worst service they ever made.
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, how does downloading a full series for like $20-50 (with DRM, etc.) beat traditional means of delivery + archival (hell, over the air and VCR)??
The Internet revolution should have been liberating by cutting out some of the middle players. Instead... the corporations have taken control of yet another delivery mechanism. Woo hoo.
What would be noteworthy would be if Mark Burnett Productions selling his series (Survivor, apprentice, etc.) directly to the consumer. Too bad we'll never see that day. :oS - Yoda716, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good for them. Google Video blows ass. The quality sucks, and the site design is non existent.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I feel bad for Google Video, all vision and ambition, but really poor execution.
Regardless, CBS has huge web ambitions anyway, so they really want to cut out as many middlemen as possible.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/07/12/entertainment/main708433.shtml - welvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see, since they seemingly won't be using Google's DRM on their own site that leaves a lot of confusion for the customer that purchases 'Survivor' episodes from both Google and CBS.
- Essefgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Customers will be able to watch the episode for a 24-hour period after paying."
Screw that! I like how they saved that little tidbit till the end. - FarcePest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1False and misleading title, as CBS has not abandoned Google. No Digg, but not marking lame because it does have the tidbit that episodes "purchased" from CBS only work for 24 hours, which is hella lame.
- Radian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lambright -- not so much frustration as disappointment, maybe my first comment was a bit acerbic.
I've seen the Porsche videos, and some of the content is OK (like the one you cited), in fact one Saturday I must have watched an hour of clips from "Top Gear" via GV, but my beefs with GV are twofold --
1) I think (in my experience) that Yahoo video search is more complete & finds/supplies more content
2) I really resent the fact that GV insists (like many other sites) on playing the video within the browser -- Gimme an AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc...
I'm not really saying GV is the worst of the bunch or anything, I'm just disappointed in GV's (perceived) value to me. I think they could do better. Maybe they set the bar too high with some of their other offerings (e.g. Google Maps, Gmail) - Harry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just shows people digg the headline, not the article. Google is not being "abandoned."
- lambright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Radian, You seem frustrated by the google video, have you seen the Porsche GT racing video's?http://www.digg.com/search?search=google+videos+of+porsche
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Proff Google Video sux, and they should have kept it in "alpha" a while longer before going "beta" with it.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@teradome - you have just experienced what we call diggsheep, which alarmingly seems to comprise the majority of idi^H^H^Hpeople out here.
I think this is a stupid move by CBS. Pay to view an episode of Survivor which must be viewed within a 24-hour period, and only AFTER it has aired. Sounds really dumb to me. That is just so wrong, starting with paying to watch Survivor. - medieval, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't even think the submitter RTFA (past tense). they are not abandoning google. they're just not relying solely on google.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When the boat is sinking rats abandon the ship.
Who are your friends google?. - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its good that google is making microsoft panic, but they haven't even made a decent search engine yet. at least so far all their things were free and they are promoting open-source.
at management level, I'm not sure they are any different to microsoft (i.e. self-preservation). they just got lucky same as Gates and now have lumbered themselves with a "do no evil" motto.
does anyone use the "i feel lucky" button ? try moving from page 88 on a search to page 22 or going straight to the last page of the search. - CyberCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wouldn't surprise me if cbs pulled out of google video
- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google video is good for Funny Clips or Trailers but not TV Shows
- Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure about Google's paid content, but the free stuff that they stream using flash sucks pretty hard.
- danielryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay for people not reading the article. if the day pass thing is true for these survivor episodes, it would seem that maybe they're using the google drm on cbs.com. could be that they've made a deal to sell direct using the google service. but that's as much speculation as this headline is.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Say what you want, I don't even know how on board CBS was with Google in the first place. When you click on their CSI link, there is exactly one episode available from Google Video - Lol
- Sleek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No digg, I already posted this story yesterday http://digg.com/movies/CBS_will_release_new_videos_on_CBS.com_not_Google/
- krohrbaugh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inaccurate headline, article just says they are going to sell on their own site, along with the deals with Google and Comcast.
It's true that Google's "Video Store" sucks real bad though.
No digg for sensationalism. - Paul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW google is having a bad week.
- MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We're sorry, but this video is not available in your country.

darn.. :( - constantine11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting but the caveat emptor is that CBS only allows you to watch a show for up to 24 hours after paying for it. What they've done is effectively allowed customer to rent a show for $1.99, whereas through iTunes, I have no such limitation. The whole point of downloadable TV content is that I can watch it whenever I want, with no commercial interruptions.
But if CBS' policy forces me to purchase expiring content, I'm going to be very reluctant, especially when I can easily record it with a DVR and watch whenever. I really don't like this. Yet again, Apple gets it: imposing a ton of conditions on how and where users can use content that they've paid for undermines the business model. CBS and the other networks would do well to see how pitifully Rhapsody and other music rental businesses have done in comparison to iTunes. - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CBS didn't learn anything from Apple's iTunes. People initially bought from iTunes because the DRM allows you to keep the music and video's you purchase. Who's going to want to buy from a competing service at the same price that doesn't even allow you to keep what you payed for? ABC and NBC will continue to make money, but I predict CBS will lose money to piracy because no one wants to pay for television content that just go's away.
- rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ sigginlike90:
I disagree. A lot of TopGear episodes are available for download and they look great. (Most videos look better in the Google Video Player).

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7670661030264628366&q=Top+Gear+duration%3Along - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lynxpro has a good point. In fact I think Leo Laporte ought to offer Call For Help on Itunes. This would easily solve his problem of getting a network deal here in the US. Sure it wouldn't be live, but it's better than not getting it at all.
- jocknerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they were really smart, they'd just throw ads in and make it available for free. Who cares if somebody edits it and removes the ads. Have you tried to get a tv show through bittorrent. Forget it, I'd rather deal with the ads. Just like 99% of the public.
- ec8423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Survivor that will work well. At least one of the 15 people who go on the CBS site each year may consider buying SurvivorOKk probably not.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I think CBS is leery about "allowing" Apple's iTunes to dominate the video download business for tv shows, hence why they first went with Google and now are trying to pimp their wares on their own site. They obviously also do not want people to view their content in perpetuity as evidenced by their viewing window "feature". The translation is that Senior Redstone doesn't want more praise going to Steve Jobs instead of himself.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know what I'd like to see? The head of G4 suck it up and actually offer each episode of *Unscrewed with Martin Sargent* for commercial download on iTunes. It would sell, and of course, the money could be used to make up for G4 foolishly blowing $8 million for the exclusive cable repeats of *The Man Show* or their non-exclusive repeat rights to *Star Trek - The Next Generation*. Hell, who on Digg with an iPod Video wouldn't buy a "Greatest Dark Tips by Kevin Rose" if offered?
*Icons* and *X-Play* would probably also sell pretty well, come to think of it... - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
PhoenixFury, thanks for catching that bit. I should've mentioned that G4 here in the States should allow "Call for Help" to hit iTunes. They hold the rights, but they do not believe the show is viable here on their channel. This would be a way to cash in on the show, and hopefully give some of that money back to it. It would give them a vested interest in terms of making sure the program stayed afloat. Perhaps this is above their own business savvy, but then again, its not like Charles Hirshhorn is still calling the shots (ha ha, terminated) there. As for it being live, the show hasn't been live since the U.S. production was axed.
I don't know how viable *Attack of the Show!* would be as a commercial download on a daily basis. Although I certainly would like to see the "Home Row'ed" skit made available. Funny, recently I saw on another show someone being hit with a keyboard...made me think of that skit. - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Call me crazy, but wouldn't they be better off selling through Apple?
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no surprise every product besides google earth and google search lick huge balls... even then that is debatable... you could use worldwind instead of google earth... I would rather get my episodes on dvd anyhow.... clogging my hd is not my idea of fun... virus scans and the like take long enough on 250 gb of files as it is..... besides the battery life of a psp is crap.... my laptop isnt much better.
- Symblized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No surprise because Google Video still sucks right now, but it is interesting that they are selling through their own means.
- onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+024Hrs... yea right. Good luck CBS. This isn't freakin blockbuster...
They are counting on the late fees i guess.. ooops.. I didn't watch it in the 24hour block - now I have to buy it again...
