real men and women code by hand!"
Oh please, I'm so sick of hearing this. I've been working in web development for years and there is nothing wrong with using a program like Dreamweaver. Yes I can code by hand with the best of them. But I'm not going to use notepad just so everyone thinks I'm leet. I code by hand using Dreamweaver for a few reasons. One is I can save snippets of code that I use often and can place them in a site with one click. The other is formatting. Dreamweaver color codes everything, and it's much easier to get your code looking pretty so others can read it without their eyes bleeding.
I swear every time a topic like this comes up so 12 year olds like to pipe up with dumb comments like that. Real men code by hand? I'm sure most of you saying this don't even work as development professionals. If you did, you'd see that most companies use these tools and use them effectively. - ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dreamweaver is what people who code large web pages with a team of 200 people 8 hours a day for months on end use. I'm sick of all the "I only code by hand, I'm a real man." No you're not a real man, you're probably a 15 year old who wants to feel more important than he is. Or you're a college student that hasn't realized that in the real world you have real deadlines and no, you can't talk your boss into an extension because you had a flat tire on your way to work.
Seriously typing text into dream weaver is the same as typing it into vim or Edit+ or whatever text editor is your poison. The difference is that for experienced coders dreamweaver has advanced functionality that, unless you've spent a great deal of time learning, you don't even know about.
Dreamweaver has it's uses as does everything else. The one thing I will agree with everyone on is that Front Page on the other hand had absolutely no use whatsoever. It was a piece of ***** with no useful functionality aside from....well aside from taking up space when you did a full office pro install. - deto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The application is still there. They have just renamed it "Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007"

- betona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good. That thing inserts an extra 20 font tags for each one that is really needed. Serious code bloat.
I'm with river, doing all my coding by hand. - soulposition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My understanding is that it will continue on and rebranded as the "Sharepoint Designer" or some such thing like that.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's Google's free html editor? You know it's coming.
- grayson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trouble is, there's a good chance the new crap will still, erm, be crap.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually it's hurting anyone that's tried to use or edit a page that someone previously created using FP solely.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good riddance to bad rubbish.
- Gaferion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this for real?????
Well, atleast I should still be able to build my pages in Word and Save As... a web file ...
/sarcasam
I can't really believe they kept developing for it this long when next to no one ever uses it. Whenever I see someone using it, I show them Dreamweaver at the min and get them off Frontpage ASaP! - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wonderful!!!!
I guess somone realized that having an app the generates IE-only web pages isn't too bright. - MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Yeah, I have a friend who was one of those "hardcore notepad coders" until he got into Dreamweaver. There are many things I love about Dreamweaver for code, but the biggest one has to be the color coding. Once you get into a color scheme it makes it SOOOOO much easier to quickly locate things within your work. When I go from the color code to black and white it feels like going from 3D to 2D. - GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Front Page makes the best web pages!
Really tight code and super easy to use.
What horrible news!!!
The Internet is going to crash now for sure.
*sigh*
NOT - rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speaking as one who has gone in to alter a FrontPage document - THANK YOU JESUS!
- NeoTSN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently there are a lot of nubs on here that just comment and don't know wtf they're talking about. Microsoft SharePoint Designer (formerly FrontPage) is WAY better than the old FrontPage which sucked more than Dreamweaver.
MS SPD07 is like Visual Studio + FrontPage + Dreamweaver. It follows Standards (omgwtf?) and strenuously insists that you program properly...no more loopholes for the n00b webpage people that don't know how to do html (get with it guys)...and basically an IDE for all the database and programming involved in msft's languages that you'd use for the web.
kwitcherbichin until you've used it. kthanks. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why so many "Thank god!" posts? Not like it's existence is hurting you."
I does hurt us. Every, time we browse to a site that was butchered up with FrontPage we see the horrible results. Most of them won't display correctly in our standards-compliant browsers.
This is especially painful when the offender is our bank, or some equally crucial website. - cpawl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FrontPage sux0rz

Dreamweaver is it's own beast with it's own crap code and problems. - Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Front Page may be dead but it''s bloated crappy HTML will live on.
- gator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Frontpage is trash, but for those that put Dreamweaver in the same category have never built commercial websites.
- adrianguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FrontPage sucks ass.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0drinks all around. at least something has gone right today.
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you Jebus!!
- NickelSax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS is replaceing Frontpage with two programs which have "wholly revamped design surface which is optimized for rendering CSS and XHTML, and generating super clean standards-based code."
The products are:
"Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 which will focus on building applications and automating business processes on top of the SharePoint platform, and customizing SharePoint sites (for both Windows SharePoint Server and Office SharePoint Server).
and
Microsoft Expression Web Designer which will focus on building standards-based Web sites and providing the best tools for professional web designers building dynamic sites with ASP.NET." - kpearce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my old company's intranet was so ugly. why? FP. Good riddance.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank... whoever. frontpage was an html abomonation.
- yvesminer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Frontpage in Office 2003 was great! I'm sorry for this decision of Microsoft
- winkydo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NeoTSN: c1
- banglogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to see FrontPage go. No room for it in the marketplace. Digg.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I currently use Front page, and it sucks! Does anyone have any good tutorials so that I can learn how to use dreamweaver or something better? Thanks guys!
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's. About. Time.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HarryBauzonia: The kind of devloper who's working for a client that only uses windows web server. Our job isn't to waste their (our) time convincing them that linux is a superior webserver (it is as far as I'm concerned). If you go to a client with that kind of attitude you'll end up losing their business.
the term consultant means just that...they seek your advice....that sure as hell don't mean they have to follow it. - charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pourquoi?
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always called them: FrontRage, GoEvil and DreamOnWeaver. :)
"real men and women code by hand!"
Who honestly has the time to "code by hand"? I barely have enough time to download porn. - MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I found that Frontpage was great for doing page layout using tables. Their table tools were quick and easy. I use Dreamweaver for my ColdFusion and other web coding, but I HATE using Dreamweaver for layout. I go back and forth between both apps when I'm working. - skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I remember correctly, the thing I liked most about FrontPage was the built-in color schemes and templates. For the color clueless, it was nice to see which colors go well together. Or maybe this was Publisher. I haven't used them in so long I've forgotten.
- ZeroQuest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why so many "Thank god!" posts? Not like it's existence is hurting you.
- ericab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank God. Digg++
- aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank god it was garbage anyhow
- ericab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why so many "Thank god!" posts? Not like it's existence is hurting you."
Yes it is. I cry every time I see a page created with FP. - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well joomla, drupal, etc is where n00bs like me create now. Who needs a static webpage creater any more?
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Frontpage in Office 2003 was great! I'm sorry for this decision of Microsoft"
WTF have you been smokin'?
I am forced to use where I work and is suck somethin' awful! - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god. I've had a site ruined by front page.
"Yes Front Page deserves to die, and I hope it burns in hell." ...to quote the great Sam Jackson - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol all the people claiming nobody uses frontpage. they teach web deesign using it here... i know they should get their money back the fools.. bbut i have seen many web pages filled to the top with code of crap.. best to throw out a frontpage generated page rather than try to fix it..
somone should have inveted a defrontpage generator.. but i guess it isnt needed anymore - andywirtanen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yikes, RTFA people. It's just being renamed, gosh.
- Dali5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new product MS will get is part of the Expression package: Microsoft Expression Web Designer
http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/web_designer/default.mspx
This one "seems" even more advanced for CSS than DW 8...
Will have to wait and see. - SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually the funny thing is Office Live is Front Page with a domain name...
Office Live works almost exactly like front page but you pay a monthly fee to use the tools and have your own small web page and domain name.... - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good ridance to all that _vti_ cr*p.
Go away, FP, Go away!! - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah!! It sucked anyway.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a late goodbye, such a late goodbye.
