He supposedly runs a 1337 group of "insider yahoo and google" employee's that could "shut down the internet in a day" He frequently harps about his 1337 hacking skills. There's 2 things people on the list do about him. They either block him, or ridicule him..but they NEVER take him seriously. If you want more n3td3v antics, check out his posts on the archived FD lis for the month of June..just as a sampling. It says that chances are that whoever is reading this is probably a fellow computer geek with a computer job that enjoys working with technology.
I used to BBS and I played Doom II online @ 14.4. When (non-geek) people called me a geek, it was a genuine insult. I think it's great that people like Kevin Rose are not only helping news & information become truly free online, but they're also responsible for helping 'geek' to become 'chic'.
Now most people I know have played games online. When they ask me to check out their computers, they're genuinely interested in the steps I take and the informative sites I use as resources.
Of course we're jealous and/or envious of Kevin. What geek wouldn't be? 20 years ago people dreamed about being a movie star or an athlete or a wealthy doctor/lawyer. Geeks didn't have anybody that was rich and popular and cool to admire and emulate. Most of us probably won't reach Kevin Rose status - but it's still pretty f'n neat to know that it *could* happen to us and that there are people making boatloads of money with pasts similar to ours.
