- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What an interesting article. I found digg.com after going to KevinRose.com to see what he was up to. I watched him on the screensavers, and I when I saw diggnation I thought someone from digg hired him to do the podcasts. It's pretty awesome that it was his idea. I remember that episode when the guy from Slashdot was on. And yeah, no one will be able to use this idea and get a huge user base.
- NinjaNoodles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kudos savmac ;) Wow, I enjoyed that. Good read. Good for Kevin and Jay Adelson! I sincerily hope they do keep on growing and expanding. I wanna see Digg become the next Ebay in terms of massive scale of one-of-a-kind type of web site. This is phenomenal to experience. I am euphoric that Kevin's decision to leave G4 exploded into something SOOO much better for him. That's the way of the future man, do all you can to make yourself money, not some company or greedy corporation.
This is the kind of success that makes me glad to be in the IT industry. The future looks quite bright my dear friends. ^-^
Digg on! - Guipil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0!I believe Kevin is an innovator and would have been successful regardless, however I still wonder if there is anyone here that discovered DIGG without having ever heard of TechTV?"
I did... never got TechTV here.. one day I was browsing the podcast list on iTunes and saw TWiT, then went to the site, followed a couple of links and foung Digg.com..
It's still related to TechTV in a way.. but that's not why I visit this site or listen to TWit or diggnation, it's because I enjoy listening to it and I really like the hosts on those podcasts. - laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg is awesome, I knew this before I read the article .. and I still know that now.
Digg guys needa patent this idea though somehow haha - silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great.
- Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Alex Albrecht was not mentioned once
Thats because Kevin is Simon and Alex is Garfunkel!!
This comment by Jay is really what got my attention:
----
Adelson: One of the things we're already developing is making digg as customizable to the user as possible. You may want to create your own version based on certain interests or create category views that allow you to see those interests. There are lots of different ways we plan on presenting the data.
----
Right now we can only choose ALL categories or one at a time.
Customizing is very important so you can get only thenews you want. If youre sick of hearing Ipod stories or deals (if you dont live inthe states), you should be able to choose the topics you want like when you are on torrentspy; click the boxes you want. - wbreim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DIGGOOGLE
coming soon - savmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone can create a Craig's List too... but will it be successful? Digg is the first of its kind and will always have its users behind it.
- ppflea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hmmm, polits and businnes!!?
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something about the grammar in that story was extremely confusing and odd.
- robweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" If a sites want to make something like digg, than there is nothing stopping him/her."
while i'll agree that nothing is stopping someone from creating a site like digg, digg has gotten so popular so fast that I don't know if you could draw away a big enough user base to make it popular. I know i've seen a few digg knock-off sites already and I just wasn't interested. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin is gonna be rich. Real rich.
Unless something goes horribly wrong. ;-) - Green14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes that was a nice interview. It gave me some background that I did not know before. You are also right, Kevin is going to be very rich.
- ashakouri1, on 03/23/2009, -0/+0He could get rich, but digg isn't some complex mathematical algorithm like google. If a sites want to make something like digg, than there is nothing stopping him/her. Google licenses its search but the idea behind Digg is simple enough to do.
- ultimate_ed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, how are they supposed to generate cash flow from this, anyway? I don't see any ads on digg.
- oohBattman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It sounds like there is going to be google-ish style directed ads on the site in the future, not a bad idea, they have to make money somehow
- c0d3b0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh...anyone notice the article is dated november 21
- flipside3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the idea mentioned near the end of the interview about applying the digg technology/method/idea/whatever to other areas. I've always thought that there needs to be one giant site linking everything that scientists are working on with a social ranking system to promote the most promising projects. Think about a system where the more prominent and respected a scientist is the more weight they carry in promoting research. This sounds so cool!
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was a good read, and a good digg.
- danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can't patent 'ideas'. maybe their specific process of promoting stories. the their are millions of ways to circumventing it.
- khilari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg has a lot of potential. With the number of active users, it can go as far as they wana take it... Kudos to the founders ... i really enjoy my visits here. If it can maintain the speed and simplicity, it will only attract surfers.
- gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" The 15 stories that attract the most votes -- or "diggs" -- are featured on the site's front page" I never knew that...
- thecrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good interview.
- TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty classy for Mr. Rose to mention /. like that. Most people reading this know of the similarities because the weak and the ignorant swap stories between the two sites. Most people reading Newsweek have not a ***** clue as to what /. or Digg are - so that seems very Woz/Mitnick/Hertzfeld/goodguyish, from my somewhat noobish appreciation of all this.
- pupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linking and aggregating is nice and all, but someone has to create content, and it ain't you guys.
- jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great interview...Google started out without ads...but yeah I used to watch The ScreenSavers never knew that he would be this big..I'm happy for him
- craigstur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you check out the paper version of BusinessWeek, 11-21-05 edition, you will see a photo of Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson on page 103. -- Why doesn't BusinessWeek include images on their website version of the same stories that have photos in the paper version?
- Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've haven't been a digg user for very long, so that was pretty interesting. Dugg!
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People may not be able to use this same idea and get the userbase that Digg does, but I honestly don't see Digg ever picking up more than mainly techies. The same concept will be repeated, but it will be repeated on subjects that are more friendly for lots of other people.
- brainspout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please don't take this wrong, I'm a huge KRose fan not a hater, but I've wondered before how successful DIGG would be today if Kevin had never been a part of TechTV. I only know about Digg (as well as TWiT, theBroken, Systm, Digital Life, etc) because I was a former TechTV fan and subsequently followed my favorite TechTV hosts to their new projects.
I believe Kevin is an innovator and would have been successful regardless, however I still wonder if there is anyone here that discovered DIGG without having ever heard of TechTV? - LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Impressive."---Spock
- Francis_Burdett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A business-oriented digg would be nice
I hold out less promise for a politics-oriented digg. Not that it may not be popular but how would it not become a flame board. That seems the nature of online political discussion. - psychosaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alex Albrecht was not mentioned once!!. AWWWW!!
- amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0go go go go go DIGGY...
- rhfootball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Actually, del.icio.us is a better digg than digg
- zipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that was a pretty good interview, the fact that digg is planning to extend to other areas other than tech such as politics is awesome.
i shall drink and digg that. - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"diggnation is the best podcast ever."
not hardly.... - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Kevin Rose is awesome. diggnation is the best podcast ever.
- c0d3b0y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol my bad...thats the magazine issue date
- Womp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I digg the digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So the site's owners are cool and all that. What does this article say for the majority of Digg's members though? It's very ***** MySpace around here nowadays for example. And I reckon that blows.
- dolby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nice, good work jakejarvis you are now one my friends list.
- TheBaumer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nice find, i enjoyed the interview
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I digg this for Mr. Rose.
man, you were still a little boy in TechTV.
You're all grown up now! - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nice, very nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good Interview. I envy krose
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0karma!?
- CalebBrown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey, Kevin Rose. If you have any job openings at digg.com, let me know. I just graduated college and I am looking for a job.
