- raisinbrainMMM, on 09/28/2009, -13/+235"INFOGRAPHIC?????????????"
It's a ***** CHART!
What kind of douchebaggery has created this "infographic" ***** - Davids26, on 09/28/2009, -5/+221Why are all slices red : (
- krystalo, on 09/28/2009, -1/+116IE8 is lower than IE7 which is lower than IE6? Dammit! It should be the opposite...
- wondertwins, on 09/28/2009, -7/+93I am horrified how IE is still the majority of all the Internet Browsers.
- capheine, on 09/28/2009, -4/+67GTFO IE. Nobody loves you and the only reason they stay with you is because they're afraid of change.
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -1/+62/facepalm
IE6 users can ***** off and die painfully in a fire.
I think alot of it comes from universities with *****/lazy IT staff. - dalittle, on 09/28/2009, -4/+59I expect a good number of web developers wish all the IE stats were zero.
- pfhayter, on 09/28/2009, -0/+39Infographic about the rise of the infographic [INFOGRAPHIC!]
http://tiny.cc/1VZOs - sonick, on 09/28/2009, -4/+40+1. Worst. Chart. Ever.
- peterjmag, on 09/28/2009, -1/+36Because the majority of people that visit w3schools are web developers/designers, and that demographic is more likely to use a modern browser.
- MWeather, on 09/28/2009, -2/+37Because it's not a neapolitan pie.
- alpha88, on 09/28/2009, -0/+29Some infographics are ACTUALLY infographics. Meaning graphics that have been designed to convey information better than a standard chart or paragraph of text could.
This, however, IS just a chart. - TheIcelander, on 09/28/2009, -1/+22Still not low enough for my taste. Last week I spent four hours doing a design that worked in Firefox and Safari and then spent four hours figuring out how to get it to work in IE.
IE is the bane of my existence. - macslut, on 09/28/2009, -1/+22When I view it this way, my eyes get all watery and I feel sad:
* Internet Explorer 6.0: 25.25 percent
* Internet Explorer 7.0: 21.10 percent
* Internet Explorer 8.0: 15.10 percent
* Firefox 3.0: 12.48 percent
* Firefox 3.5: 8.88 percent
* Safari 4.0: 2.55 percent
* Chrome 2.0: 2.50 percent
* Internet Explorer 8.0 - Compatibility Mode: 2.46 percent
* Opera 9.x: 1.76 percent
* Firefox 2.0: 1.37 percent
1/4 of the people out there are still using IE 6.0??? - Baryn, on 09/28/2009, -3/+23It's pretty straighforward:
2/3 Bad
1/3 Good
2 out of every 3 people are morons/plebes/sheep. This was already known. - diulei, on 09/28/2009, -0/+20Or it means lots of people with Macs like Ars... the worldwide browser graph puts Safari use much, much lower.
- KingGorilla, on 09/28/2009, -0/+19I wouldn't call it the worst. I was still able to understand all the information it conveyed
- Baryn, on 09/28/2009, -3/+22"/stuff your MS hate, it's grown quite tiresome."
No it hasn't. Fuel the fires of progress. - CaptainLando, on 09/28/2009, -2/+20Cognitive research shows that 3D pie charts are inferior perceptually to 2D pie charts. That's all I'm saying.
- chejrw, on 09/28/2009, -2/+18I ***** love infographics
- mrsteveman1, on 09/28/2009, -0/+15What you mean is 50% Gecko and 50% Webkit, not 2 specific browsers.
There is room for multiple browsers so long as they render pages correctly, and don't hold the web back. - swimtwobirds, on 09/28/2009, -0/+15not a chance in hell.
- f0dder, on 09/28/2009, -3/+17less than 1% change for an 8 yr old browser is significant?? GTFO
- JanMarian, on 09/28/2009, -2/+15Stats for Poland:
http://www.ranking.pl/en/rankings/web-browsers-gro ...
Firefox 52,01%
IE 34,43%
Opera 9,88%
Chrome 2,51%
Safari 0,67%
Opera Mini 0,18%
The rest of the world really needs to shape up! - pushmouse, on 09/28/2009, -0/+12What version? The latest one (9) is just a skinned Firefox 2.0.
- v3rtex7740, on 09/28/2009, -6/+18no, none of them should EXIST
it should be 50% firefox 50% chrome
we can have the deathmatch from there. - tacotomato, on 09/28/2009, -11/+23I'm still using my netscape browser and it works fine.
- Oryx, on 09/28/2009, -0/+11You mean, 100,00% of the time :)
- scoot2006, on 09/28/2009, -2/+13@bjornski
It has nothing to do with fewer choices. There's no reason any web browser/rendering engine should display the exact same content differently than any other. - pfhayter, on 09/28/2009, -0/+11NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
- neoquietus, on 09/28/2009, -0/+11The reasons for IE6 being greater than the newer IE's are:
1) Technically inclined people (those who could and would update their browser) have abandoned IE entirely for things like Firefox. The people still using IE aren't capable of changing or upgrading their browsers.
2) Office restrictions. Many workplaces do not allow the employees to install their own programs, so most users are stuck with IE, usually the version that came with XP (since most office computers are running XP).
3) Stupid requirements. In one of my recent jobs I worked on updating a program for the U.S. government. This program "required" the use of IE6 for both testing and usage, in spite of the fact that it worked just fine in Firefox and Opera.
4) Microsoft painted itself into a corner when it ignored standards in IE6. IE6 renders websites differently than all other browsers, but it was the undisputed champion for years, so there are a lot of websites that only render properly in IE6. Microsoft has been improving their standards compliance in newer versions of IE, but that causes the old pages that were designed for IE6 to look terrible. - Jpesci, on 09/28/2009, -2/+13Because the problem is by using IE, you are literally handicapping web developers. Now they have to support these old IE versions that literally don't read CSS code correctly. They are broken browsers. You don't notice the damage you are doing to the web development community.
This is a fact: the web would be a better, prettier place if developers everywhere didn't have to support IE 6 (at the least.) - pfhayter, on 09/28/2009, -2/+13commas as decimals freak me out 100.00% of the time.
- j035u5, on 09/28/2009, -1/+11And opera, specially on mobile. And safari is nearly as quick as chrome but with adblock. We need more than 2 browsers because not everyone is the same as you.
- datdamonfoo, on 09/28/2009, -1/+11Not really. It just means that more Mac users than Windows users go to Ars, which makes sense as it is an Apple-friendly, Windows-hostile website.
- Moralogic, on 09/28/2009, -2/+11This is all that matters to most of us:
63.91% IE
36.09% Browsers that don't totally suck balls. - angrytortilla, on 09/28/2009, -1/+10Well in its most basic sense, it's a graphic with info. But it's also a buzzword for Digg that sucks in views.
- Baryn, on 09/28/2009, -4/+13You're a ***** idiot.
- wondertwins, on 09/28/2009, -1/+10it's people like you that makes IE still the majority....
- h0ly, on 09/28/2009, -2/+11Because web developers love the fox, specially with firebug.
- tnoy, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8The same reason the stats for the people that visit Apple.com are different from those who visit Microsoft.com
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -1/+9Me too. I like how they combine information and graphics.
- captininsanity, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8I have no issue with people switching to IE8, it's not my first choice, but at least its standards compliant for the most part. What Microsoft should do is every time they see a computer with IE < 8 they should display a page demanding the user to upgrade, possibly with threats of malware infection (which would be true). Unfortunately one of the most stubborn groups of IE6 users is not your grandparents, it's corporate managers. Probably the same ones that are responsible for infecting 9% of corporate PCs with malware...
- ryansmith18, on 09/28/2009, -1/+9...and you base this on what exactly? Chrome has a very long way to go before catching up with Firefox, both in market share and in browser features.
- TCBevolver, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8And what about 4D pie charts???? YOU DON"T EVEN KNOW WHICH DIREC
- Oryx, on 09/28/2009, -0/+7And Opera was there before either of them. Look at the stats for mobile browser usage, and then tell me about standardization.
And neither Safari (99) nor FF 3 (72) can pass the Acid3 test. That's standardization?
http://acid3.acidtests.org/ - Chipesh, on 09/29/2009, -0/+7What an idiotic statement. Standards by definition, need to be non-proprietary and understood by all.
Toyota and GM don't use different inches and centimetres do they?
The last organisation you want setting any standards is Microsoft.
With the mess they have created in the browser field alone, this shouldn't need explaining.
Bob - iDoraemon, on 09/28/2009, -4/+11Okay, this is taking too long. Time to pull a Terri Schiavo on IE.
- victorycig, on 09/28/2009, -3/+10Except that IE8 supports what, 4 rendering engines? They should thoroughly document their proprietary standards and switch to an existing, open standard rendering engine like webkit (Chrome, Safari) or gecko (Firefox, etc.), both of which are faster and more accurate than IE's engines.
- ban1d0, on 09/28/2009, -2/+8Those 22% are Ars Technica site visits only. (the second pie chart)
The global market share of Safari is 4%. (the first pie chart).
Considering that the global Mac OS market share is nearly 10%, it means that 6% are using Firefox on a Mac. -
